I have put a vote for Other, that being MailWasher if you are only monitoring one email account you can use the free version of MailWasher which has all the functionality of the Pro version but only for one email account.

I particularly like the fact you can delete the spam/suspect emails at server level without have to download them to Analise them. I also like the origins of spam tool is good for new spam content but from known spam origins, you can also add new origins of spam databases increasing the overall effectiveness of MailWasher.

David, don't want to argue but what you said

Quote

sort of doesn't sound right. I mean, in order to analyse the message, the program undoubtly needs to get it from the server - how else could it look inside? :)
Title: Re: Which FREE antispam do you find the best?
Post by: DavidR on November 27, 2005, 08:00:48 PM
It only downloads the headers and a small part of the email (no attachments) not the complete email and is view in plain text. When you click Process Mail, those email that are automatically marked as spam (or user input) for deletion are then deleted from the server. The actual email program is then called and you download the remaining emails.

I should have put "I particularly like the fact you can delete the spam/suspect emails at server level without have to download them in full (to your inbox) to Analise them. Perhaps that would have been more clear ;D

Czesz Vlk,

You can give Mailwasher some eyes. Go inside Mailwasher to Options, then General and Edit DNS Blacklist servers, click and edit it and save. I check my mails on my ISP popserver against several spam list servers, like SpamCop, ORDB, Deadbeef, Spamhaus, Five-ten, Abuseat. Well that is just my personal collection to check against, works beautifully, nearly none missed.
All these  mails are flagged accordingly (blacklisted in red letters), and are deleted in one go manually by me or those falsely flagged reset on the ISP mailserver and these I want land in my Inbox. Spam is deleted and blacklisted, but never bounced. It is working perfectly for me, great solution from the developer "dunder from down under". Mailwasher is my "pralka e-mailowa".

pozdrawiam,

polonus

Are there ISP's that don't block spam? BT Yahoo! catches 99.9%.

Spamihilator has something like 20 pluggins that you can manage, order and configure.
Very flexible and with great accurance in my opinion. But, as it could happen with the most of us here, maybe we stay with one and don't test all the others to compare or review.

Then you should join me and cast you vote in the Other catagory, it's lonely there on my own ;D

Are you making a deal with any spam killer application?
If so hope spamihilator wins as I've translate it  ;D

Can you tell us the secrect behind this poll?  ::)

My ISP uses Postini's SpamGuard, and it works well enough that I don't bother with any filters of my own.

And they use what must be a fairly high-end version of SG, breaks spam down into categories (sexual, get-rich-quick, "too good to be true", etc.).  Their quarantine site shows an icon-flag for each message by category, and you can adjust leniency versus strictness separately for each category.

hmm.... I cannot realy answer the question about what anti-spam is good becouse of most e-mail clients like Foxmail (my fav. for USB stick) has build in antispam functions. Some of them I think can also update ruls for spam detection.

spam can be detected also by signatures.
that kind of mails often contains viruses and may be also new some.

AVAST using modules that can be added.

AntiSpam + avast chest

PopTray - Been using it for years and see no reason to change.

A few of it's features........

      * Unlimited number of Accounts
      * Quickly preview a message
      * Delete messages from the server without downloading them
      * Spam management using rules and white/black lists
      * Low resource usage

.....and more

Spamihilator and SpamPal have them too  8)
After testing a lot of programs, Spamihilator seems to me the more flexible one. Anyway, it will be an user taste...

Tech,

Just out of curiosity....do you currently use Spamihilator?  If so, what is the resource utilization (RAM)?

I ask because even though I see no reason to change from what I am currently using I am not opposed to change, if it is for the better.

Yes. I'm using it.
Resources depends on how many plugins do you use, how often email is checked.
Spamihilator does not use RAM while not checking email.
For me, receiving email, CPU goes from 0 to 26% lows down to 13% and then to 0%. Some seconds.
Virtual memory could be 13Mb. It's not few... but, for me, RAM is not the problem. CPU is what delays, the crucial point.

Been using PopTray along with K9.  SPAM is deleted automatically from the server when mail is checked.  K9 results for my desktop is 98.92% of SPAM is caught and deleted, it's 99.42% for my notebook.  K9 finds the SPAM when mail on the server is checked with PopTray, a rule in PopTray has it deleted from the server.  I only have a few rules in PopTray, and a few for Outlook Express, my mail is clean as can be.

Title: Re: Which FREE antispam do you find the best?

Along the same line as Tecnical question:
If you intend to create an "All-In-One Security Suite" then please make sure it contains
individually selected moduals. That way the user can choose his/her own mix.
If it's an all inclusive package, it will turn ou to be another "System Hog"
I have dumped many of them in my time.
I'd like avast! NOT to be among them.
Thanks.

I sniff avast! turning into bloatware... is it possible ? I mean, just like Tech said, all these questions are nothing but pure reserach surveys... you check what people like and then you decide much easier what to offer in your next package.

I don't find Spam a problem. As a rule of thumb I only use my "private" e-mail address (to  outlook express)  for 100% trusted people / companies. My ISP seems to have things under control. To view any pics. in mail have to click on the header, plus after all I have Avast! Mail scanner. ;) I use a hotmail account for anything else. If Spam becomes a problem I'll just open another Hotmail or Yahoo account.I've never had to do so though as their spam filters work fine . I hope this poll isn't heralding changes to Avast's stance on mail scanning. Alls well this end Vik !
Title: Re: Which FREE antispam do you find the best?
Post by: kakapo on December 08, 2005, 09:43:03 PM
My situation is almost exactly the same as Abraxas's. I have a good ISP whose filters work most of the time. I use "disposable" accounts for anyone not trusted 100%.
I might look at anti-spam software if I had major problems with spam, however.

As i have my own mail server I'm in the lucky situation to do spam filtering on server side - best free one I have found here ist spamassassin - and I have no need for client side spam filtering.

Hi folks,

I hope Sasza is not right with his remark about Avast developing into "bloatware".
Bloatware is suffering from extensive featuritis. But some new features would be very welcome. I would like Avast to be able to catch all hidden rootkits before they run. An API-hook scanner in Avast, we would love it.

hi
spams illegal in Australia
i dont get spam
and god knows why..... my email address is everywhere ;D
i used to have Mcafee,,spam killer ,,it was good but tedious and stubborn
and often had to be reconfigured.
I now just have Avast Home 4.6
and spybot which i think has a few spam options
most are just set to the defaults or higher.
its not a bussiness computer so maybe that why i dont get any spam,,actually i got more spam with mcaffe than i do now,,

also i think outlook expess has a spam killer enabled too which is prohably the one im using primarily now.
the block sender is okay for blocking stuff.

cheers

I use SPAMSUBTRACT.  I used it for awhile then got a new computer that came with Norton's version.  It did not learn well, or I didn't figure out how to use it.  I have tried TrendMirco at work.  Still use SPAMSUBTRACT there too.  I like the ability to mass delete from the server.

BitDefender has an antispam function (which works well very well) and uses about the same amount as memory (if not less) than Avast!.

Well CharleyO, he's not the only one, that's for sure... I also use gmail as my primary e-mail and I never ever got any SPAM tanks to gmail's built-in antispam feature. This is so good, I completely abandoned my ISP's e-mail and switched to gmail... for good.  ;)  ;D

Strange, my hotmail account rarely has anything but Spam. Probably because it is only used when I'm forced to give an email and I don't really want to and Hotmail doesn't do any form of automatic spam filtering. Yet my MailWasher's origins of spam (known spam locations) flags most of them as Spam and my filters catch virtually all the rest.

Don't tend to get much spam. I use the unlimited e-mail address function anything@... with my domain name to 'personlise' accounts.

So the company name will be the first part of the e-mail address alwil@....

Anyone that sends me spam, when I have SPECIFICALLY ticked (or unticked - watch for the catch) the box gets blocked.

INCIDENTALLY this is how I came across AVAST as I had signed up for 12 months with Norton - Sygate or whatever the idiots call themselves norton@...... the amount of spam sent to that address .... (from Norton) was stunning. When I complained, and I said I knew it was from them (after about a month and £65 or whatever it was then) they said tough ......... they had my money.

Erased Norton that day, then installed Avast, that was 2 years ago.

NORTON - GET STUFFED!!  :-*

I Feel better now  :D

Mindspring/Earthlink provides spam filters you can turn on for your email account. You can block email addresses and sometimes whole domains so that they can't send you a single one.  It catches a WHOLE lot so I only get about 12 day instead of 80-100 per day (keeps em in a spam folder that is auto emptied occasionally).  Then Mozilla's Thunderbird email program provides another level of spam filtering, once you get one you can tell it that it's SPAM and it does a pretty fair job of catching any further from the same folks.  It can also be setup to catch dirty words and other keywords.  Fairly satisfied with this.

Mailwasher, hands down. How can you beat being able to view what is on
your server without downloading it, then putting a check in delete for ones
you don't want.

Plus it learns what mail you want & don't want...10 out of 10 for Mailwasher.

Yahoo mail does a good job on blocking/removing spam.

With email clients, I just use the filter options that most have build in.
Works like a charm, no need for a third party prog to block spam.

I can believe that. I'm on Yahoo! too. I went away for 7 weeks in the summer and had 600 spam emails in my junk folder when I got back. 3 junk mails had got through, which is 99.5%.

I think junk emails are deleted after 1 month, so the real figure was probably even better than this, and may well be 99.9%.

I pity anybody who doesn't have such a good service and gets this crap in their inbox!  :-X

I am a Technician at a local computer store. Most <Free> or <Freeware> either have spyware, viruses or malware that are installed on a computer when the program is setup. If you want a good spam filter....
DO NOT DOWNLOAD A FREE PROGRAM.
It will more than likely have maleware, spyware or other unwanted software installed. You GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Its free for a reason. Yes there are some, (and i mean limited) programs that dont. Those are hard to find. So if you want a spam filter my suggestion would be to buy a good known program that is listed on a reputable site and has lots of feedback that is positive about the program.

Thats just my 2 cents. 9/10ths of EVERY computer that comes in the shop is riddled with spyware and maleware and viruses due to the fact they download FREEWARE like weather bug, time sync and all the other goodies that seem to help you out by telling you the temp outside or giving you a free pointer that laughs when you click or something of that nature.

The rule of thumb is "If its free, its got a catch."

I am a Technician at a local computer store.

The rule of thumb is "If its free, its got a catch."

I'm also a computer tech, and have my own store, and fully agree with your comments especially when it comes to spyware, spam and the like. Test it..and most good programs give you a full trial, and if it does the job....BUY iT!

Well, I completely disagree of this.
There are TONS of good and clean freeware round. What you need to do is downloading it from CLEAN sites.
There are TONS of clean sites (download.com snapfiles fileforum filehippo etc. etc.).
There is no need to be affraid of freeware if you have a good antivirus and antispyware, if you know the source of the download.

For me, the rule of thumb is "God save the freeware and opensource"  8)

WhIzAtIt,
You must have a lot of money.  ;D
The majority of 'FREE" programs are good and rival commercial software. There are however some free programs to contain
an unwanted payload and should be avoided. A simple google search and some common sense usually brings these rotten eggs to the surface.

If you're in doubt about a certain type of program, there are also lots of places where a second opinion is always available.
This is one of those places.  :)

Oh yes i couldnt agree with all of you more , but the better freeware is hard to find without, as some have mentioned, downloading and installing it to try it.

Yes there are good freeware programs out there its just finding them. And i couldnt agree more about doing a google for the program in refrence to its relation to spyware and malware, however the average joe that brings there computer in the shop dont think of it this way. They see a new free program that keeps important dates and reminds them in a week or a day that its coming soon. But BLAMMO they got nailed.

In conclusion:

there are several good known tools to get rid of these unwanted programs.

Like HijackThis, Spybot, Ad-Aware, AVAST <YAY>, and bazooka that are totally free!!! So you have to agree there are some VERY good free programs out there its just finding them.

I've downloaded mail washer as suggested, I've already got spy bot.  This morning I've got 4 spam emails, 3 of one type, one of another.  What have I done / am I doing wrong! :P :(

Unfortunately , nothing. Spam is a fact of life that's why you need a program like Mailwasher.

Probably nothing... Just that MailWasher will need some time to learn your spam 'patterns' (and maybe some adjustments) to work perfectly.

An OFFLINE ANTISPAM PROTECTOR ;=))))
Of course, there is no "1-st" antispam protector.
Tastes differ. I use to filter by TheBAT. Works perfect.
