Title: Not Enough Storage Error
Post by: nightshade on October 05, 2015, 05:22:35 PM
I'm having issues updating the virus definitions, I was receiving an error about not having enough storage, thing is I have re-installed the Avast Free version and I am still having issues.

I had registered till Nov 16, but since I have reinstalled after attempting to update it says I am up-to-date, yet when I check into the about section for the virus database it says it's 2009.

I am using version 4.8.1637, is this too old? also am I right in saying that Avast has finally dropped support for 98?

In short, yes and yes.

When did it drop support for 98? as it was fine just a couple of days ago.

If you need AV for museums OS   ;)   W98

ClamWin   http://www.clamwin.com

For realtime protection you need to add Clam Sentinel  http://clamsentinel.sourceforge.net

To be honest, that 98 was supported a few days ago is new to me. ;)

Windows 98 as a game machine might be OK provided it doesn't go on the internet.
There are too many germs out there to expose this dinosaur. :)

Says on that blog link that it would continue with the definition updates for older versions , but I take it that 98 is excluded.

Also what does clam sentinel actually bring to clamwin?

Well the full virus definitions update is still available for avast 4.8.0 https://www.avast.com/download-update, so I would have thought if that is their the regular VPS auto updates would still be available.

"not having enough storage"

A simple question would be ¿ Do you have enough free space in that HDD ? being a PC with Win 98 how big is your HDD ?

It certainly updated just a few days ago, but it was just yesterday that I received that message about not enough storage, then eventually it would say it was up-to-date but when I checked the about it stated that it wasn't.

I say it was a false reading saying it was up-to-date on the about section as it would have taken much longer than only a few seconds to bring up the up-to-date box, in other words it's saying up-to-date when it hasn't actually downloaded anything.

I have XP on a small partition (18GB), and I've seen this message also.
I only install the shields, none of the bloatware extras.

As long as I have at least 2GB free, it installs OK.

Finally getting used to using both ClamWin and Clam Sentinel.

I have cut the full scan file extensions down to five .DLL, .EXE, .MSR, .SCR and .SYS, as it was taking quite a bit of time for the scanning.

Also not to scan a file over 5MB.

Does that sound okay?

As said, Realtime protection,

When I think of real time protection I think of it checking newly opening web pages and links, it doesn't appear to have this.  :-\

When I was asking if 98 was still supported what I really meant is Avast 4.8 still allowing successful downloads for virus updates? After receiving that storage error message then DavidR saying that it could well be ok for virus updates it has left me kinda confused.

I can confirm that the Avast 4.8 1368 will not download the virus definitions without the storage message regardless whether there is plenty of storage or not, so it would seem that Windows 98 is no longer for Avast free.

I was using version 7 up until last week when I saw that my virus and engine definitions had not been updated for 2 weeks prior to that! My mum using the computer more than me these days and she hadn't noticed. So, I went to the Avast website and downloaded the VPS file for that version, but all it did was change the program version to the latest one (version 10) after the computer was restarted, so it looks like versions 9 and 10 are the only ones that will be updated from now on, which is fair enough. I knew that the program version I was using was outdated by almost three years, so I'm not overly surprised!
