Title: Questions
Post by: REDACTED on October 22, 2015, 02:42:52 AM
sent in at ticket to Avast almost a week ago and havent had a response, so just wondering if anyone in the community here have any answers?

a) do you log? if so, what do you log and how long will you retain it for?
b) do you rent or own the server infrastructure that Secure Line connects to?
c) how does the data compression work, is it by using a different protocol or is it actually compressed on the server first?

i know it says it does not log, but however i have read somewhere in the T&C that it keeps some log...

it doesnt bother me that much if they do, but just wonder what they log.

Hello! Answering these questions for you:

a) We have some logs in two points:
1. Application logs: These will tell us what you were trying to do when you had an issue or the app crashed. You can see them if you go to "Contact Support" on the Help section of the app and select a technical issue. They will be sent only if you submit your issue through that form in the app and attach the logs. You can always preview the logs before attaching them to the issue.
2. Server logs: We have logs of VPN sessions. We log when someone connects/disconnects. Like the application logs, these will also help us measuring the quality of the connections, solving issues and making improvements to the infrastructure.

Please note these logs do not include any sensitive information or personal identification.

b) We own most of the VPN servers and few others are rented. Ideally, we want to own all servers, but maintaining servers in some locations can be quite expensive.

c) Data compression happens on the server. The compression works mostly with texts and images when these kind of data is detected.
