Title: Avast causing system lag with streaming media
Post by: REDACTED on October 29, 2015, 11:01:35 PM
I'm trying to listen to youtube, and avast starts scanning it (for what reason I have no idea, its bloody youtube). It's scanning is causing the stream to lag, turning my music/video/whatever into the sounds of a dialup modem. I went into the settings per some information I found and turned off Intelligent Streaming and Script Scanning, and it's not fixed it. I'm honestly getting close to chucking it in with McAfee and Norton, because since I paid for it I've had a lot of problems with it.

You have me confused here as it appears from this comment that you have multiple antivirus programs installed ?

The general rule is only one resident on-access antivirus installed - you should uninstall previous AVs

No, I just don't like Norton or McAfee, like much of the consumer market.

OK what avast version and build number are you using (10.4.2233 being the latest) ?

I watch quite a few youtube clips and so far I haven't had any issues with the frame rate or audio and that was on the build number I mentioned. Though currently on this system (see specification in signature below) I'm running the avast 2016 version beta testing and no issues there either.

How long have you had avast and has this only recently happened ?

Some had previously found some issues with win10 and avast, but the later builds of avast had resolved these - unless you happen to be using the advanced builds of windows 10. But I haven't seen that in the forums relating to youtube/streaming, etc.

Unfortunately I don't use win10 so I can't be any practical help on that front.

You could try an avast Repair (control panel > programs and features > avast - Change t then select Repair) followed by a reboot.

If that doesn't work a clean reinstall would be the next step.

And just an FYI, I just looked when I was doing something and now Avast has my CPU at a steady 25%

It didn't fix it, I spent the last few days between work and figuring this out and I figured out what it's spiking. My network card is being pushed to its limits because of Avast and Firefox, because Avast wants to scan everything that comes in, and Firefox is trying to pull down the stream.
