Occasionally, I to use my mail client to message my phone data/pics etc
Avast has been deleting the attachments.
I turned off the mail shield, restarted and it's still doing it.
I'm running Avast Free on my laptop with Win7. Claws email.
S5 android phone with no avast(or any issues with attachments to date)

also, can someone please explain or point me to a page that has info on how to use these verification letter things? It always takes me several tries and I often simply give up in frustration.
for instance, are they case sensitive? spaces?

What exact version of avast ?
Any other security (related) software installed ? (or was there)
What is telling you it is avast that removes the attachments ?
In what format are the attachments ?

You are using a old version of avast.
Perform a clean installation of the latest avast version :
- Download the full installer for the version you want ( https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=179855.0 )
- Remove avast through control panel
- Run avastclear ( http://www.ache.nl for a link to the tool/instructions )
- Reboot
- Install avast
- Reboot
