Title: Where is the root installer on google play?
Post by: REDACTED on December 10, 2015, 07:49:15 AM
Was this removed? if so why? Having a custom named APK was the only and most beneficial aspect that set avast apart from other mobile anti theft products.

Hi,

Rooted Anti-Theft hasn't been actively developed for a long time.
And currently there aren't any plans for future support.
So it was decided to remove the installer from Google Play.

Nevertheless, some root features will be still available
in the standard Google Play version.

This is very bad news! Till now I have installed Avast AT rooted on all devices which come to my hands, but now I will need to search for some alternative, which is able to make it harder for thieves to remove the app.

Have you found an alternative?

I also have Cerberus (Premium), but battery drains very fast.

Thanks

is there any plans to make the standard avast anti-theft much secure so that when even the thief hard  resets the phone it will still bee in the device like the rooted one

Then why isn't Avast not developing the root version & making it much better? Actually I have the root installer setup for anti theft so if I install the root version will it be safe ?

Gratings!
If you still have rooted anti-theft. Please make a copy of it using Titanium Backup, then other people would have a chance to use rooted version too.
Can you do it? I and hundred users will be grateful!!!

I paid for a year license, for what???? Not rooted version do not need to be licensed. What's the point of using such product? Hard reset kills all data. Give me money back! Or rooted version.

To be exact, the Rooted version of AT is still in Play Store, however i couldnt access it directly ... I first installed the standard one and then when i scrolled into Advanced Settings there was a button called ROOT MODE ... i pressed it and it brought me to the rooted AT in the play store ...

Although, we (users) will think twice on using a non-supported version of an app.

TO be sure,i am still unable to find the option of ROOT MODE in advanced settings. This is too sad and I am on lollipop 5.1.1 using a custom rom on yureka. Can this be a problem? Some one reply me. I am in a great need of this rooted version. thanq

Alguma coisa ....port 443 after 50000ms

I'm unable to download the customized app, I always get download error.

Is there any chance to get an APK file of the root app (with whatever name) instead of ann app that tries to download it and get an error all the time?

Thanks

On the normal version there shouldn't be an option for auto turn on GPS (root only).
This is actually a deal breaker, the ability to connect GPS remotely would ensure the maximum battery saving. My goal is to have an android device acting as locator in vehicles (but trying to avoid draining the vehicles battery)

Any solution available?

Best is to hardwire the device to the car battery.

Thank you Eddy, I did my search and found nothing that would suit better than the rooted version of avast anti theft.
Anyway, its obvious that the phone has to be wired to the battery, but when you're talking about motorcycles with small batteries that spend the whole winter stored in a garaged, you'd be concerned about the phone draining the vehicle battery.

I've found that dedicated vehicle tracking (within reasonable prices) are useless as there is little gps accuracy.

Anyway, I'll get some solution.
Thanks

Good I checked here before reflashing a new ROM to my phone.
Rooted antitheft is the only antitheft worth having on your mobile and it's very sad that avast stopped the support and development.

I have pulled out the APK from my rooted phone, give it a try guys and see if it works. I'll need to know before I go ahead and flash a new ROM.

Sadly this will also only act as unrooted. In order to achieve root mode I think the Play download is a must.

Well, not supporting the rooted version anymore is one thing. Please be so kind to remove the root installation from the Anti-Theft installation options! Altough I guess this might ship with the new version of the app, but a warning of any kind would have been extremely useful...

What if you use titanium backup and have it turn avast anti theft into a system app after you have it all setup then if the phone gets wiped it will still be there when it boots up.

If the system partition is also wiped, there is not a "resurrection" script of system apps.
By the way, nothing survives a full wipe :)

Yup the app from the link in my last post doesn't offer a root mode, the only thing it does different is installing under different name (File Explorer I think).
I flashed a new ROM, tried restoring with Titanium Backup, root mode didn't work, tried installing the app by itself - root mode didn't work.

Canceled my subscription, screw dat! Nothing left worth paying for.
Also uninstalled the Mobile Security, with each new update it was getting more and more intrusive with their other apps offerings and other things.
Bye Bye.

system remains untouched. With your app installed in /system/app, it will survice a factory-reset. But its data might not, as /data gets wiped. Which means, all required settings need to be part of the app itself, or of its "default settings" which get deployed on first initalization.

Hello to everyone. I might have some good news. Or not.

As I strongly dislike the new versions of A.M.S., I keep backup of and old version I liked (4.0.7871). Including the antitheft app.
On my device it seems to work to restore these apps, which actually allow you to make that "hard-reset-proof" setup offline, with no need to download anything else.
The only difficulities I had were connected to the removal of the new version of antitheft app from G-Store . What I did to finally succeed was uninstalling it in Titanium, removing all *avast* files within the filesystem (excludung sd-card) and (important) wiping Dalvik-cache. Otherwise I kept recieving error messages like "You installed A-T from Google and from us at the same time". So make sure You remove all existing A-T traces first.
Now, after the success, I am allowed all those options to integrate the app into rom as well as remove A-T from within the app itself, or through a nandroid recovery and a zip file.

So, I offer You my titanium backups of M.S. as well as A-T (named Avalanche forecast) with clean data and that zip file for removal of system-stored settings. Curious how long it will last here.
download here (http://www.dropbox.com/s/eqy8bslmin2tp0v/avst_ms.zip?dl=0)

Good luck and let me know if it works, I hope so.

I just want to express my deepest contempt on Avast's decission to remove the root/hard-reset-proof feature.
I was a happy user with this feature since its very beginnings, before it even was integrated into Avast. Back then in 2010, it was named "Theft Aware" and developed by the Austrian company "ITAgents GmbH". The app won several prices and created an international stir. [1] Then the software was bought by Avast. And now, Avast simply dumps it and instead makes its UI look like a child's birthday party. Farewell, Avast.

Avast have really screwed up here. THE, reason I purchased it was for the rooted protection - the ability to survive a factory reset/installation of custom rom.

That's gone. I don't care what they say, the current version provides no theft protection at all. The thief just has to boot into recovery and perform a factory reset.

Fortunately  I kept Backups of the "real" Avast mobile security app & and anti theft customised packages, and have now got them installed on all my Mobile devices.  The customised package (the one you can name as you wish) is MODEL SPECIFIC  i.e. Galaxy S3 package will only work on the S3 etc.

I have 2 old S3's,  an Xperia Tablet Z and a Samsung Galaxy S tablet; my current phone is Galaxy S4 (still a damn good phone after 4 years!)

All of these devices now have the full protection and theft protection that I originally bought Avast for.

I WILL NEVER be "upgrading"  to the new  play school / kindergarten, placebo version!

The customised installer package is specific to the phone model - eg package created for the Galaxy S3 will only work on another Galaxy S3.

You have to give the phone model that your package was from so that others with that model can use it.

Hope this helps

Hi,

I still have my Avast Anti-Theft rooted version installed (actually I restored from a previous TB backup).

Apparently it is working, the app opens, I can setup everything I want, hide the app icon, the app is installed with the same alternative name I used before, and it also has the hard reset protection, capable of storing and check stored settings (the settings were read successfully).

But the app does not work anymore. I can't track my phone using My Avast, I got no response from my phone. I can't setup continuous tracking, it can't check for new version ("no internet connectivity available" error, but this was expected). The Fix connections problems option doesn't receive the test message from the web.

So, I think the rooted app is useless....  :'(
