Title: unprotected
Post by: REDACTED on December 17, 2015, 03:46:07 PM
Hi everyone, since years now using Avast Free Antivirus, very happy about it too and all of a sudden I find Avast not working anymore. The Little Icon is red. Entering Avast it says the registration is fine but unprotected,....if I click in the words 'restore all', nothing Works. No updates, nothing.....Anyone knows what to do? Do not want to download an other antivirus....Thanks in advance

What avast version are you using, 11.1.2245 is the latest ?

What is your Operating System ?

IN the mean time you can try an Avast Repair - Control Panel > Programs and Features > Avast Antivirus - Change. From the next screen select Repair and OK your way out, reboot.

The operating system is Windows 7 home Premium, I have tried to desinstall the program with the panel the control desinstalling program and then they ask you to repair which I did first, rebooted but nothing happened. Then I downloaded the avast clean and desinstalled  the program in the secure mode and installed it again in the normal windows. But the same thing, it says I am unprotected.....I have to see which versiĆ³n it is though, I am now on an other computer. But thank you already a lot for answering and taking your time.

You're welcome.

Lets see what you find on the version you were trying to install.

Here is a link to the direct download locations for the latest avast versions, https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=179855.0 (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=179855.0).

What other security based programs do you have installed (anti-spy/malware, firewall, etc.) ?

Do you happen to have Windows Defender running ?

Firewall is on apparently, Windows defender definately not and there is no other antivirus that I know of...Thanks again.

The firewall needs to be on avast free doesn't have one. The win7 firewall has outbound protection, but it is disabled by default, so it shouldn't be getting in the way.

OK, you said you did this:

Then I downloaded the avast clean and desinstalled  the program in the secure mode and installed it again in the normal windows.

Normally we suggest a clean reinstall and in a specific order, whilst you may have done that, it is just to seek confirmation.

1. Uninstall avast from the control panel > programs and features > avast, if it suggests a repair or anything else ignore the suggestion and continue with the uninstall.
2. After the uninstall reboot.
3. Run the avast uninstall utility, from normal mode. The uninstall utility will ask to do this in safe mode, answer Yes. It will handle the boot to safe mode and run the utility, reboot.
4. now install the latest version of avast.

I'm at a loss as to what else to try.

But there analysis tools that you could try to see if there is any underlying issue that may be impacting. Check out this topic, whilst it is normally for malware analysis there is one general tool that may help analyse your general system state.

See https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0).
The tool is the second one down the topic, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (or FRST for short), running that doesn't remove anything, it analyses your system and generates two logs called FRST.txt and Additions.txt. Attach these to your next post and I will try to get one of the analysts to check them out.

Full instructions on where to get this tool and how to run it is contained in the topic.

Sounds like the OP did install the buggy beta.

Sounds like the OP did install the buggy beta.

Whilst it is a possibility, I find that unlikely.

Given he has only joined the forum 2 days ago and this is usually where a beta would have come from. To get this failed beta auto update, info947 would have had to installed a previous beta build to be offered/updated to the failed version.

Though it is possible to browse the forums without being a member.

If we had the version Number that was installed, there wouldn't be any guesswork. :)

Well we sort of do know what version info947 had, as I had previously asked what version he had and also gave a link to download the latest regular release. He essentially confirmed that was the version he had.

Whilst there was no exact version number it is implied that it was 11.1.2245.

Maybe yes, maybe no. Best, we sit tight and wait for a reply from the OP. ;)
