Title: Downloading problems
Post by: Melella on December 19, 2005, 11:51:22 PM
Hello

I have recently downloaded Avast Home Version 4.6, but have found that I am now unable to download anything else.  eg games.

I have tried disabling Avast, but still find that I have the problem

Can you please advise me how to fix this.

Thank you for your time
Melissa

Which Windows do you have?
Which firewall do you use?
Did you allow ashWebSv.exe (WebShield) to connect the Internet?
Do you have any other security program or antivirus installed?
Which browser do you use?

Sorry, we need info to help  8)

What errors or messages are you getting when you can't download?

Although I don't/can't see how this is directly related to avast, it doesn't block, just scans and alerts you if there is a virus. How recently have you installed avast and when did you notice you couldn't download in relation to installung avast?

Can you give any examples of the games, etc. you aren't able to download, URL, Name of Game, etc.

I have XP.  I installed Avast about 6 weeks ago and noticed the problem since then.  Before that I could download games.  I just get a message saying thank you for downloading when it hasn't downloaded.  It happens all the time in download.com, but also other websites.

I'm not sure what Webshield is sorry...I'm not that up on the terminology.

The game I was trying the other day was the Trial version of Age of Empires II from Download.com.

Browser is Internet Explorer.  Latest version I think.  I have no other anti virus program installed.

Thanks for your help.

WebShield is an avast provider.
Left click the 'a' blue icon on system tray and you'll see, at left, the WebShield icon.

Which firewall do you have?

Where are you downloading to, your desktop or a specific folder on your HDD, I have one named Downloads so I can find them easily.

Although I would hope that it isn't a browser issue, have you tried it with a different browser, firefox, opera, etc.

Do you use a download manager?

Webshield 4.6-739

I don't think I have a firewall. It was Norton but i disabled it.

I download to a downloads folder too.  I know its not downloading because this small box opens in the top right hand corner with nothing in it, and then it says thank you for downloading...too fast for it to have actually downloaded.

I havn't tried a different Browser.  IE is all I've ever used and I don't want to change it.  Surely it wouldn't be IE though!!!?

This is like playing Russian Roulette with an automatic pistol, a firewall is an essential part of your security.

If you are unwilling to try things, then you are unlikely to find the answer, as I said I doub't it is a browser thing but trying another would confirm this.

I was able to download "Age of Empires II computer player patch" this is only about 256KB (I'm on dial-up) and that downloaded fine using firefox, avast, webshield, outpost firewall all running and no problems.

Are you sure you've disable it? Downloading problems are generally related to firewall blocking.
Anyway, like David said, you shoud have one enabled firewall.
I suggest a 3rd party one to protect outbound traffic that Windows internal firewall does not protect. For instance: Kerio, ZoneAlarm, Sygate, Comodo (are free ones).

Surely it wouldn't be IE though!!!?
Why not?
Did you change IE settings? IE could block downloads...  :P

I knew I'd be ragged about the Firewall.  Will try and download Zonealarm, if it will let me.  The reason I don't think its IE is because IE was letting me download before I downloaded Avast.

Unfortunately I can't download Zone Alarm either.  When I try the green progress line comes up at the bottom of the screen, takes about 10 seconds, and then nothing happens.  Its probably something really simple, but I'm totally lost!  have spent ages tying to adjust IE and Avast and still it doesn't work.

We don't know that for sure, although I'm at a loss as to what it could be. There has been a windows security cumulative update for IE. I don't use IE (very rare occasion) I have quickly checked the IE Properties, Advanced options and can't really see anything that would directly block downloads.

I can only suggest either a reinstall of IE - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378
or what I found on a google search for 'cant download files with Internet Explorer' without the quotes:
http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/downfile.htm This link is the first hit on google and that gave these other links, there are more, you will have to check these out if the ones listed don't resolve this and/or run the google search and check out the other hits.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299328
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=177976
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=183506

These may not be directly related to the issue but they should at least give you and idea of what settings may have a similar effect.

At the least enable the windows firewall to give partial protection.
