I just downloaded the antivirus software and did a thorough scan - came up with zero viruses but a message that says my temporary internet files are corrrupted and therefore couldn't be scanned. I am sure that that area is where I have my problem. I have already tried deleting all temporary internet files and they just keep coming back (don't show up in trash). Any suggestions?

Temporary internet files include cookies active x etc. every time you start internet explorer mor and more are added so thats why thet come back because these files serve no purpose dont worry about them being corrupt

You can basically delete the files without any consequences. They're just cached there, meaning probably the worst thing that will happen is that your browsing will become a bit slower...
-
actually when I delete mine my browsing is faster :)

Let me suggest you some automatic cleaners for these files:
IE Privacy Keeper (http://www.unhsolutions.net/downloads/iepk.zip) When you close the last browser window...
BeClean (http://boozet.xepher.net/download/beclean120.exe) Lots of settings...
Others can be found here (http://www.avast.com/forum/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=1509;start=0) at section Cleaning & Tunning Tools. ;)
