Excuse my ignorance in this regard but what is Avast32 as opposed to Avast 4Home etc.

Avast32? Do you mean Avast32 3?That 32 number means it's a 32bit program i'm guessing ;) avast32 v3 was the previous version of avast!....The current version is avast!  v4 (4.6.744)
