Title: W2K hang during boot up
Post by: oemtech on March 22, 2003, 06:14:50 AM
I had auto update for the database and program turned on. After the last program update(Avast Ver is 4.0183.) W2K/SP3 plus post hot fixes hangs during bootup.

After much debugging I found that ashdisp.exe was the cause.  I was able to end the process via taskmgr and that free'd up my system. I uninstall Avast and now more bootup hangs.

Any suggestions.

I have the same problem with xp pro. After running bootvis, i've found the same file to be the cause of the hang. My boot time is around 120 seconds. It does finish the boot however, but hangs for a long time after the winlogo screen. Haven't found a fix yet. :-\

I installed AVG as a temporay measure. After surfing the net and not finding much about this hang condiiton (really didn't expect much) I did a Ghost backup, uninstalled AVG, rebooted, installled AVAST, rebboted,  turned off the Program Update, turned off the database portion and rebooted.  On the reboot I got on the net and allowed the Virus database update. I have been running ok so far.
