avast internet security version 11.1.2253 failed to create a rescue disk
-
update: aparantly the cause was that avast didnt like my USB flash storage device very much and refused to work with it.
rescue disk was created successfully on my sisters USB.
sorry for wasting time
-
Not time wasted when you find the cause and take the time to report it.
That could also help others trying to create a rescue disk, thank you.

Hi Lotan :)
Any idea why Avast didn't like your your USB flash storage device ?
Did you get an ( error ) message ?

just a little box that said failed to create rescue disk. i attached a pic of everything i see when the error pops up. i really have no idea why avast refuses to put the rescue disk on it, maybe because its an old flash drive?
-
I have no idea either, nor how to troubleshoot this.
But as I am curious too, I will put this forward to Avast :)

Just to gather some more information.
What is the make/model of your usb stick ?
Is it USB-1, 2 or 3 ?
What is the port you hooked it up to ? (USB-1, 2 or 3)
If your sister also has avast installed, did you tried to create the rescue disk on her system with your usb stick ?
-
the brand of my USB stick is Maxell anything beyond that i dont know. i dont know what usb type it is but i know its not USB 3 (ive had it for 5 to 6 years maybe even longer). ive attemtped to create the rescue disk on this USB stick in both usb 2 and 3 ports and it also fails to create rescue disk on my sisters laptop so its not my pc at fault.
-
Thank you for the information.
This might help avast find the problem and solve it.
-
i wish i knew how to get more info on my USB stick but theres no info on the stick itself other than the brand and i dont know how to find info out

You can use Explorer. right click on the drive and look at properties. How big is that drive ?
-
its 15GB thats the most useful info i can get from the properties, ive checked

It's certainly large enough.

optimizing didnt fix anything, it still fails. i think the USB may just be too old for avast to work with

Report it directly to Avast:

i wouldnt know what to report. the issue is with the usb stick itself as i can make one just fine with a different stick, besides without more information about the stick that doesnt work such as model and usb type i doubt there is much they can solve with "old maxell 15GB USB flash drive doesnt allow me to make rescue disk on it" as that is literally all the information i have.
-
I've just had this self-same problem.
Have now tried two USB sticks - one fairly old and only 512MB so possibly too small and one 8GB much newer.
I really don't think it's my hardware that's the issue here - I'd expect the software should at least give some indication of what the reason for the error is,
simply stating "failed to create rescue disk " isn't exactly helpful.
-
I am having the same problem but with creating the image for CD.

Hey, ho... well here's a thing. Just created a rescue disk first time on my wife's laptop running Avast 2015. This works on the same old 512MB USB stick I tried before.
Went back to my new PC running 11.2.2261 (Avast 2016) and found I hadn't activated Avast yet. Did this, tried to create a rescue disk and..."failed to create rescue disk". Tried both USB sticks again & still no joy.
Now getting fed up and about to raise a ticket with Avast.
Both machines running Win 10 BTW.

Hi Bob3160,
do you know if a rescue disk created using a previous release of Avast will work on Avast 2016?
- regards, Geoff30
-
Your question doesn't make any sense.
The rescue disk/usb is just that.
It works with the software you have put on it and it doesn't matter what you have installed on a system.
-
I've successfully created rescue disks (USBs) with Avast before this last update. Now it tells me it can't create rescue USB. Nor does it provide an alternative or even trouble shoot the darn error. I can't help to think that the provision of the Avast Safe Zone is a wee distraction to real issue. We paid for this?

The answer is Yes. Remember that an old rescue disc or USB doesn't contain the latest VPS updates and therefore
may miss some things that a newly created one would.
-
I have found that rescue disk creation fails to both any USB drive (I tried four different drives) and to a .iso file saved to my computer. This worked in 2253 but fails in 2261. I tried removing the Rescue Disk feature, rebooting, reinstalling feature, rebooting but this didn't solve problem. I also tried a Repair but again no help. Ticket #282793 submitted to Avast.

not fixed in 2262 release from today
-
Really strange to see that it doesn't work on some avast versions on a specific usb stick while it works on the same stick when using another version of avast.
I haven't seen any post from avast saying there where changes in the rescue disk creation part.
Anyway, for those who want to create a rescue disk with everything they want on it...
I can recommend the use of BartPE.
It will let you create a bootable device with any tool you want on it.

Did you disable the self-protection feature in settings> Troubleshooting ???

Did you disable the self-protection feature in settings> Troubleshooting ???
I can verify that disabling the self-defense module allows the creation of a rescue disk.
My Environment
Avast: 11.2.2262
OS: Windows 10 Pro x64

Yep. That works! Thanks! So either there is a bug in Avast or an omission in the instructions. Easiest fix would be to update the latter. Users shouldn't have to resort to the forum when the failure is due to incomplete documentation.

This is an acknowledged bug - work around is the option given - this bug I believe has been squashed in a previous beta version https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=186192.0 (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=186192.0) 11.2.2263.
+ Fixed creation of Rescue Disc
So it shouldn't be too long before this is resolved without having to disable the self-protection function.
