Title: Windows 10 will not boot after Avast Free update
Post by: REDACTED on March 16, 2016, 11:08:10 AM
I have two  pcs running Windows 10.   After the latest update  I was alerted that I needed to reboot the machine.   The PC hangs at the rotating dots screen.   I was able to use a restore point to get the PC running  but would like to know if there is a fix for the problem.

I suggest that you do a clean install of Avast. Especially now that you've used a restore point.

I have already tried that.   Even a clean install results in a failure to boot.

It looks as though the update did not complete.  So lets go for a fresh install after this FRST fix

CAUTION :  This fix is only valid for this specific machine, using it on another may break your computer

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

NO JOY

All procedures above performed.   On reinstall, PC froze at end of install and had to be hard restarted.  Avast free was not fulkly installed.   Went to control panel and attempted repair.  Repair completed but on restart windows would not start.   Had to use a restore point to get PC operating again.  Where do I go from here?

Could you temporarily disable cryptoprevent and see if that is blocking the temp files area

Will it boot into Safe Mode ?
http://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-safe-mode-windows-10
...probably need to use USB RE (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10  ......scroll down to use the media creation tool below to create your own installation media with either a USB ).

I'd boot into Safe Mode and then setup Clean Boot
http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-of-windows-10-to-diagnose-issues/
Reboot and see if Windows comes up.........if so, then start clicking on items one by one in MSCONFIG and reboot to see the conflict/culprit.
Something being loaded of course............maybe Classic Shell (just example) ?

Thanks, this at the moment appears to be one of the unknowns...  I will have a rummage around to see if I can find some commonality

Yes, I will probably have to go through 1 by 1,   The trouble is that it takes so much time once it hangs and I have to do a restore point.  Yes, I can boot the PC in safe mode after a hang.   I have tried installing from safe mode but it still hangs on normal boot.     Thanks for your help.   I will post if I find anything out.   BTW I have Classic Shell running on other Win 10 machines and it does not cause a problem.   On another note, the second machine must have been a minor glitch as I was able to get it to boot after the update.   I am trying to get out of town for the Spring break so I will be putting this on hold til later.

Befor uninstallin Cryptoprevent, did you run it and remove the protection ??? (Removing the protection restores the Windows Policy settings. If that wasn't done before it's removal, the changed policy would still be in effect and could still be the problem.

Yes, I restored the policies before uninstalling Cryptoprevent.    That did not work.

I would love to see the final outcome of this problem.
A problem I've never encountered and I've installed Avast on hundreds of computers.
I hope you can finally pin this down. :)

I think the only way to truly know is do CLEAN uninstall of Avast.
Boot into Windows and setup a CLEAN BOOT in MSCONFIG.
http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-of-windows-10-to-diagnose-issues/
INSTALL Avast.....I'm assuming will install.
Reboot.....I'm assuming will reboot into Windows.
Go into MSCONFIG and one by one click on items, rebooting after each one, until you find culrpit.

I disabled all non windows services and all startup programs and windows still would not boot after a clean install.   I am going to need to go into auto-runs and see if there are any suspicious programs starting.   Headed out for spring break so problem is on the back burner for a week or so.   Happy Easter everyone.
