Title: Avast spying on activity
Post by: adw.tokoroa on March 25, 2016, 06:58:30 AM
Every time I go to log onto my internet banking, Avast pops up a message offering enhanced security (for a price). This only happens with my banking, so it is apparent that Avast is monitoing my activity to activate the popup at a time when I expect high security to already be in place.

This sort of behaviour is normally associated with malware and is becoming annoying.

Yes, I am using the free version. I don't have a screen shot at present, but it is not the actual popup that bothers me, just that it only appears when I am logging into my bank account.

If it happend again pls take a screen shot of it and did you try repair option? And can you post the Url of the bank?
Repair Avast:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> Avast
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

It just detects the online banking web address and pops up that message. There is nothing "sinister" or "spying" behind it.

Avast has a data base of most of the financial institutions. We helped them put it together.

You have already said that it wasn't offered to you, but if it were installed, you aren't forced to use it and it can obviously uninstall it in the same way as other avast modules/shields, etc.

No, I didn't. I wrote in another thread about safe zone browser.
Another topic, I think  :)

Here it is:
Hi,
I use Avast free 11.1.2253 - didn't get an unwanted istallation of SafeZone browser.

SafeZone Browser and Internet Banking are in essence linked, without it you couldn't use it for banking anyway, that was the point I was trying to make.

and I replied that I didn't got messages while using my bank account. In the meantime DavidR cleared this  :)

Again, it just detects the bank URL, not your bank account specifically.

@ stibi,
I also didn't say anything about bank accounts. I said Financial Institutions. :)

Yes, ok. My fault, I use the wrong term.
But this remains: before any security software interprets my bank URLs I want to know about ...

sorry but maybe you can rephrase your reply. What you're asking doesn't make any sense.

Google and other search engines also check what you type in the address bar.
Are you complaining to them too ?

The last time I checked Avast wasn't a search engine.

If you read the entire thread, you'll realize this topic refers to the SafeZone Browser.
It's making sure you use it when you get to a financial website.
