Title: Why can't I change my password?
Post by: REDACTED on April 04, 2016, 12:19:45 PM
I go to the SET PASSWORD page, input my existing password, then the new password, and its confirmation.

I press the SAVE button, and then a 'No Entry' sign appears in the SAVE button, and nothing else happens.

What are the password rules and maximum length?

Being in the General forum it could relates to many different products, ideally it should be in the correct sub-forum for the question.

The avast forum doesn't have its own password it is linked to the my.avast.com account.

If you change the password there that would apply to the forum also. To change the password you would receive a validation email to confirm you are the owner, etc.

Minimum limit of 6 (nowadays 8) characters for the password length. Now, I'll give some tips to decide on a more secure password.

Take any phrase which you won't forget. Doesn't matter if anyone knows that as well or not. Now, use the first and last letters or each word. Throw in a spacebar here and there too.
Now, try the above with just the syllables. You have a more complex, weird password. And even if someone gets to know it, it won't be easy for them to remember it (unless they know the elementary phrase as well). Basically, you've taken the phrase and encrypted it yourself.
If your website still wants more complexity (in terms of special characters, numbers etc.), try and follow this: 1 can replace, L, l (small L), i/I. Similarly, ! can replace them as well. Same goes for $ and s/S, @ for a/A, # for H/h.
By simply adding a character which is not used normally in the beginning, you'll strengthen your password manyfold. Some characters (such as ~, `;:\|^) are rarely used. You can salt your own password by appending them to your password.
Many systems require passwords to be changed every few months with the rule that you can't re-use the password. Many people, keep the sequence as password1, password2 etc. However, try using 1password, p2assword, pa3ssword and so on.
If you have numbers in your password, you can replace them with the special characters. Also, you can replace them with the first letter of the name of special character which is related to the number.

Minimum limit of 6 (snip)
As you can see from the screenshot, the minimum length required is 8 (Eight) characters.

Same issue here.   15 character password (generated by KeePass), entered in as shown by bob3160.  I click on the "Save" button, it dims, it gets moving light/dark blue diagonals in it (like something is happening), but nothing happens.  After minutes of waiting, I close the Change Password box (hitting the black circle with the white x in it), and my old password remains in force.

I had the same issue a couple of days ago, trying from a different PC on a different network.  I don't believe the issue is on my end.

Hi bob3160.  My current (working) password is longer, so that shouldn't be the issue.  I assume there's a problem with something on Avast's end.
