Title: Unkown error while upgrading free version from 11.1.2253 to 11.2.2261
Post by: REDACTED on April 17, 2016, 09:16:13 PM
Hi,
I'm running an XP, SP3 with Avast. The Tray-Icon actually contains an exclamation mark, complaining the program version:
Virus definition is up-to-date: 160417-1
Programm version is 11.1.2253, new version should be 11.2.2261.
Every time I try to upgrade, it starts downloading some files and then stops (each time at the same point). Message says:
Last error: unkown error
Files downloaded: 23 (3,39 KB)
Server: Download f5275202 AVAST9 Server
http://f5275202.iavs9x.u.avast.com/iavs9x
http://f5275202.ivps9x.u.avast.com/iavs9x

What am I doing wrong?
kind regards
Frank

Try a clean installation of the latest version.

You could try an avast Repair first.

XP - Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and select Repair from the next screen. Reboot after the Repair.

Try a clean installation of the latest version.

Obviously this is not an option: Software, that fails to update, instead needs a clean reinstall will be kicked off my system

So if Windows will not update you remove it ?

If the avast software isn't updating it doesn't mean the problem is avast.
It can be other software you have installed causing the problem.

So if Windows will not update you remove it ?
I would consider this seriously. But fortunately in the last 20 years Windows never asked me to do a "clean install" due to update problems. And of course it's much more difficult to switch the OS instead of switching from one free virus scanner to another one.

If the avast software isn't updating it doesn't mean the problem is avast.
It can be other software you have installed causing the problem.
You are right!
But good programmers would be a lot more gassy than quitting an update job with nothing more than "unkown error..good bye". There is no such thing like an "unknown error". This is really poor programming style from the middle ages of IT. You can always tell where you are, what you tried to do and what failed. You might not know the reason, why you failed, but you know what you've been doing while crashing. Communicating an "unknown error" with no more hints is a lack of quality, that makes me frighten. What about the quality in other areas of the Avast program?
