Title: Registry Help PLEASE
Post by: CoJo on December 02, 2003, 10:59:34 PM
hello to everyone!

I found a nifty little tool that will help me clean up my computer :)
right now I have a screen about my registry and it has lots of duplicate entries.
What should I be careful of/look for before I delete any??

and, again, I need to set up another email account due to the volume of crap that is coming through my hated OE. yahoo has an email, but it comes with an email scanner.
I just want the addy, no scanner as Avast! Rules ...will this cause a conflict?
thanks for any advice,
cojo

Well, I'm tempted to say that when you need to ask what to be careful about, you shouldn't do it at all ;D

What are these duplicate entries - could you give some examples?

Cojo, those are very wise words from Igor  :)  Playing with the registry can be dangerous. Whatever 'utility' you have found, make sure to backup the registry before attempting ANY changes.  [edit] and make sure you know how to restore those backups  ;) [/e]

and, again, I need to set up another email account due to the volume of crap that is coming through my hated OE.

I do not know the situatation with your ISP's, but here in Europe most ISP's allow you to have more than one e-mail account on each service that you subscribe to. Therefore you might be able to just set up another account without going to Yahoo. Actually, Yahoo does filter a lot of the e-mail running through their servers, this is largely due to the fact that a lot of Spam originates directly from Yahoo accounts.

Good luck,
W.

8 invalid entries isn't so bad  ;) (depending on what they are)

As there are not many, it might be a good idea if you could cut and paste all of them, so that the guru's can tell you what is safe to remove.  ;)

CoJo,

Most of the entries there are totally harmless (in my limited knowledge). I'm CERTAIN Technical will have something to say about one of them  ;) and I would prefer that he and the 'clever' guys confirm.  8)

Good luck. ..W.

Technical  ??? :)

I'm here  ;D
Cojo, you can trust in the entries found by:

Norton WinDoctor (I'm doing a fair play with Symantec!  8))
jv16PowerTools (now a Shareware)
BeClean (Registry section)
RegClean (from Microsoft)
SpyBot (Registry section)

Using these tools, I have never got a headache... All of them make an automatic backup of the deleted Registry keys...
I take a look at your posted keys and, as Walker said, they seem to be harmless. But, how do you receive the information of the Registry keys, I mean, you said you have 'found a nifty little tool that will help me clean up my computer', what is this tool?  ;)

EasyCleaner documentation by ToniArts

it backs up everything I would delete
also it found a whole bunch of duplicate files...with warnings to check what you deleted...
I haven't done anything yet, Technical...I'm reading it...and was very surprised at how much junk it found on my computer.

I'm still trying to figure out how to get my wicked picture on my profile...did the prohost thing but have to study how to use it :-[

Cojo,

Gee Whiz...Your all over this forum like a bug. hahaha

DONT TOUCH THE REGISTRY!!!!

DONT TOUCH THE REGISTRY!!!!

Your computer more than likely does not need extraordinary "cleaning".

If you are not haviing problems, leave the entries alone.  Some keys are shared and if you tamper with them, you may create problems with a program that WAS working fine.

Until you gain more experience isolating and identifying keys and why they are put into the registry, better leave well enough alone.

The Registry is the heart of the computer that brings it "all together"
Mess with it, and you will regret it.  You could end of doing a full reformat which is not fun at all.

Like all else, if you have a Registry problem or think you have one, come to us for help and we will guide you.

By the way....I never heard of the program you are using.

Just a kind bit of advice.  I know you are eager to learn and there are more freeware programs out there than you can imagine, but only use those you need, and understand what you need before using them........if you get my drift!

The all wise and willing...
techie

Cojo, listen to techie... Be careful!

I was just saying that 'automatic' cleaning from some applications could be safe.
Techie is right, be calm and easy with this thread: if you did something very wrong on the Registry, nothing will work anymore  :'(

CoJo,

It was a while back that I saw this, but EasyCleaner 1.7 from ToniArts had a bug in it that broke the Help and Support Center, requiring that you download a fix from their site.  I can't say whether this problem still exists or not, but like techie, Technical, and Walker warned, be careful.

To be fair to ToniArts their cleaner is, or was at the time, recommended by the Wilders Security web site.

Hornus

ok, I followed the experts advice and just used my spybot! see?? women do listen to the men ;D

and I wish I had sooner...I could only uninstall part of the toni thing...still have.82mb left...when I go to add/delete I get a message to close all running apps, empty temp folders, and run set up again.
same message over and over again! I did a search and thought I deleted/shredded all of it. I did email them for support in getting rid of the darn thing...

CoJo,

Don't be puttin' down Bubbaville.  They gave the world 'Daisy Duke,' arguably the finest product to ever come from from the South.

Hey Gang...

Hate to be a stick in the mud, but we DO need to keep on topic.  That is, whatever Cojo's topic is that day. hahaha

Happy Holidays to all !

techie

PS:  Cojo, a simple registry cleaner that you CAN download and use is RegCleaner.  Technical has the link somewhere.  It will try to find it.
Once you have it, I can tell you how to use it properly so you won't get into trouble.

ok...

I apologize to the members of the forum for my many questions and comments.
I do not wish to upset anyone by asking these questions...it was not my intent to do so. My ignorance about computers is obvious, and I hope that my willingness to learn was equally obvious...

If I have a strictly Avast! question, then I will ask it. Until then, I take leave of the group.
Public humilation is not my idea of support when it could have been messaged to me that I was out of line. I do take the security and correct working status of my computer computer very seriously. Apparently I did not understand that the the General Topics forum was not the place to ask my "other" questions...and I have no control over who responds or how they respond.
As such, I will  pick up new things by reading only...

My sincerest apologies,
cojo

Cojo,

Then I must publicly apologize for ruffling your feathers.
We kid each other all the time here on the forum.

Technical jumps on me whenever my posts are more then 3 words and Igor contradicts my solutions quite often, and sometimes VLK, our moderator doesn't agree with me at all.

I have also gotten the "off topic" thing, but it really means that we need to stay focused.

It's part of being here among friends.
I certainly think it is admirable for you to ask questions.

We have over 1800 members who do what you do.....ask questions.

Please Cojo, nothing here is to be taken personally.  NOTHING.  IF I thought for a second that you would feel this way, I would haved IMd you but it is common practice for us to do so in this manner.

You can yell at me, call me names, even take away my cookies but.....You are a friend.....STAY WITH US HERE.

I will probably get an "off topic" from someone on this myself ....but if I can keep a friend here, then I will take the heat.

techie

PS:  Techical was kind enough to me the link for RegCleaner that you needed:
