Title: avast! 12.1.2272 Backup Settings function broken
Post by: RejZoR on June 21, 2016, 10:10:32 PM
I've tried to update my custom settings and found out it's broken. It's impossible to export (backup) settings anywhere. I've tried desktop, my documents and even secondary non-system partition, always DENIED error message. Can someone else try exporting settings if you guys get the same error...

There has been a problem on many systems backing up settings (not on my system) prior to this 12.1.2272 build. The previous work around was to disable the self-defence module, looks like they didn't resolve this previous issue.

Just checked it on this build and no problems on this XP Pro 32bit system.

Exported settings w/o error on Win10 64bit system. Its a custom config, not complete bloatware install. Was also successful exporting the settings before updating from 11.2.2262 on the same system. I have a Win7 64bit box that has not been updated yet from 11.2.2262 (custom config) that also exported w/o error. Self defense enabled on both systems.

Nope, disabling Self Defense didn't change anything.

What's even more bizarre, it used t work fine with all older versions, but with 12.1, not anymore. Any idea rom avast! team how to figure out what exactly is causing this? What is denying avast! the access to file system to backup settings to a file?

No problems with backing up settings on 3 Win 7 Pro SP1 laptops.  Also, updates went smoothly preserving previous settings.

Well, there's got to be something affecting it then which denies the access???

So, it works for most, but some of us are affected. I wonder what's causing this. Two of us that have this problem run Windows 10 64bit. Which seems to be the only known thing in common.

Rejzor, do you use CryptoPrevent?

I have a feeling it could be that causing the access denied issues.
Title: Re: avast! 12.1.2272 Backup Settings function broken

Nope. avast! is the only security software on my system.

Only thing that has radically changed between then and now is the OS installation source. Before I was using Windows 10 downloaded from Windows Media Creation Tool and now I'm using Microsoft's image from their webpage.

I do have two bizarre issues otherwise I couldn't figure out.

I'm often getting "The stub received bad data" when executing random apps. It doesn't happen always, just here and there. Re-running apps and they suddenly work problem free. I have no clue why this is happening. And the second thing, Task Scheduler's service just stopping itself for no reason. I want to open Task Scheduler and it says my computer couldn't be found. I check the services and Task Scheduler simply isn't running. Then I start it and it works. This is on a fresh clean system. I don't know what the hell is going on.

I'm having the same issue!

Just uninstalled and reinstalled the pre-Nitro version, which is better anyway as this new version is completely laggy on Windows startup and cloggs everything. Haven't been this unsatisfied with a new Avast update in years. >:(

Edit: I'm on Windows 7, by the way, and don't intend to upgrade anytime soon.

Wouldn't hurt if someone from avast! team would drop in here to at least give us some idea where to look at and see what actually causes this. Because I have no clue how to even debug this.

They acknowledged the problem in another thread.
The problem is that it only affects certain systems not all. Guess they haven't figured out what
the common denominator is ???

So I'm not alone I guess. I have several Win 7 x64 workstations, some are OK and some are not. In this case don't matter what I do I cannot export my settings, below is the image of the problem
(http://)

So no one from avast has responded to this, that's not the way to go about it I have been pooling my hair trying to figure out what's going on and did clean install using avast uninstall utility, clean remains of registry that was left from avast nothing is working, just when I thought everything is fine this happens  ;D

I have reported this to avast as well, hopefully they will fix it.

The problem is that they apparently haven't been able to duplicate the problem.
Since this doesn't happen to all systems, it's been an elusive problem.
I have several systems and this bug effects only one of them. (It happens to be the laptop I use most often.)

Avast could ask us for logs and/or memory dumps to narrow down the issue.

I have 7x Win 7x64 and 2 of them experiencing this issue.
Even thou not all users are effected, obviously there is an issue between different setups in Win 7 and Win 10. I believe this was an issue way back in earlier version and that was fixed, then this again so its within avast itself that they have to find the problem.

Well that doesn't exactly surprise me, I wouldn't have thought it was something that would get to tech support. Plus I think that they aren't exactly regular visitors to the forums. I just wonder how many avast users actually use this function (if avast had any stats on it).

Personally I think there should be someone responsible to have a proactive presence in the forums, even if it is only monitoring the issues being reported by users. Then they can seek more information if required to pin down the problem.

What makes this one more frustrating is that it isn't effecting all users and it isn't on one specific type of installation, OS (version and 32 or 64bit, etc.), avast version, other security based software.

Customers with random OS have this issue  so its difficult to  troubleshoot this problem I agree. I use this function quite often to make sure that my settings are-always  in tact and I have try literally everything possible thing to figure this out, avast clean install, uninstalling Outpost, even clean windows which I have ISO of it and that is with nothing on it except SP1, nothing makes a difference.

In fact I have 2 identical workstations with the same software and hardware bit for bit and after creating image of both and comparing them, binary are the same and in one that works and the other doesn't, go figure.
But I heard this was similar issue in earlier version of avast e.g. 7-8 and they have fixed that, so they should have some clue I don't ??? know

Ooo after going back to avast 11 problem is gone

Make sure you're running the latest version.
Screenshot was taken right after it allowed the backup on the same system that always had the permission error.

I'm using the latest version and I have try everything possible and still no go but I guess that's the randomness of this particular issue  between users :(

Yep, I also cannot export my settings but only on one of my machines, the other one works fine. Both are Win 10 x64; however, there are a few subtle differences as described below:

desktop, win 10 x64, upgraded to 12.1.2272 from a previous version, import settings works ok, export settings works ok

laptop, win 10 x64, clean install of 12.1.2272 (never had avast installed before), import settings works ok, export settings does not work ok (getting access denied).

Just for the record, I did try the safe mode, aswclear, and a complete reinstall (laptop) to no avail.

Update: So, in my previous post, I reported my desktop worked and my laptop did not. So, I started to investigate and I found an interesting discrepancy. Specifically my desktop and laptop have different builds but both are reporting as being up-to-date and I can't get the desktop (which export works on) to update to the later laptop build (which export does not work on):

Desktop build 12.1.3076.0

Laptop build 12.1.3076.6

Maybe this has something to do with why some work and some do not?

Here's hoping Avast looks into this quickly.

This is why I said worked one day and broken the next. The older version worked, the latest one does not.
Please Avast get this stuff sorted out. Since you now have auto update on by default, this needs to be fixed.

I don't think that this causing the issue, maybe I don't know  I just checked and all my  win7 machines have the same version which is 12.1.3076.0 and some have that issue some don't.
I think avast should sort that out as well, how is that some of us are on that build and some not I'm sure avast will have logical explanation for that but even so problem exporting setting still exists.
Title: Possibly a Permission Issue?

Hey guys/gals,

This seems like a permission issue but I'm not sure how to fix it. Anyway, I changed my login from my Local Admin account (which is my normal login) to the Full (Hidden) Admin account and I was able to export the settings. See below:

Using my Local Admin account:

Using the Full (hidden) Admin account:

Note: I did the initial install using my standard login account (Local Admin).

Hopefully this will help Avast understand the issue more clearly.

I really wouldn't call that fix as non of my broken computers have been fixed, its hard to say what you call that but definitely its not fixed, never was until rest of users effected can confirm their machines are rectified.
