Title: Avast Free update problem on PC Win XP SP3 32bit system
Post by: REDACTED on June 22, 2016, 01:39:10 AM
Hi!

I have got a PC with Windows XP SP3 32 bit system. I know, I know... It is a pretty vintage now. But it is enought for my needs. I am using Avast Free for 32 bit Windows with Polish language location files. The version of Avast Free is 10.4.2233 which seems to be up to date although the date of publication was 2015-09-17. Latest virus definitions are 160620-2 from the date of 2016-06-20. Yesterday I have noticed a problem with definitions update. The program try to download a 1st file of the package: prod-pgm.vpx.dld and stops. It doesn't work - isn't downloading this file at all.

Can you help me fix this problem? Or have you just stoped the supporting Windows XP's version of Avast Free?

Best regards,

User

No, I don't. I've turned it off some time ago. It didn't work for me. I was using only package update once or twice a day.

Explanation on the screen:

As you can see, Avast program can't keep a streaming connection at all. I remeber the story about a year, 2 years ago, when Avast Team try to stop regular package update. I was one of the guys who fought for package update, because of this problem. We have won. Avast Team left us regular package update solution.

I know that Avast Free no. 10.4.2233 is old. But I don't receive any new version since 2015-09-17. That's not my fault - I have been trying to update many times since then. It's Avast Softwere who does not edit a newer version of Avast Free program for Windows XP SP3 32bit system users...

PS by EDIT.

When I try to launch this file: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe my computer shows fatal error exception and terminate the process. See by yourself:

Unless there was a really good reason for having the old 10.4 series on your computer I would definitely get rid of it. The current 12.1 series free version does work on XP SP3 32 bit machines. If you were concerned about problems with the some versions of the 12.1 program and XP you could use the older 12.1.2215 or 12.1.2219 versions from September 2015. I don't know if Polish language files are available. I can't think of any reason why Avast would stop language support. Avast no longer upgrades some of its older program versions. I don't know if the 10.4 system is 'new' enough or not. I don't know if it's possible to go from 10.4 to 12.1. Even if it was I would be more inclined to uninstall the 10.4 version and completely wipe away all traces of it before I installed a 12.1 version. I don't think you could uninstall the 10.4 version properly with the current 12.1 uninstaller. When I switched from a Panda 2015 program to their 2016 program I had to use a specific 2015 uninstaller. Obviously Avast might be more be generic but I wouldn't bank on the 12.1 uninstaller being problem free. If there's a 10.4 uninstaller I would use it.

Most importantly I'm not an expert on this matter. I'm just an ordinary poster who uses XP SP3 and remembers the 10.4 program. Wait until an experts makes a post on this and take their advice.

That is not entirely correct.
It only works if the CPU supports the SSE-2 instruction set.
The entire 2016.x version series will not work if a system doesn't support it.

Kinda the same is with the avast for business cloud version.
Only if you run the online installer it will work on non SSE-2 system.
The full installer doesn't work.

I have the latest avast free 12.2.2272 on my Dell Dimension 8200 with a 1.8Ghz P4 in it. It does work
but my computer really should have more of that very costly RAMBUS Memory .. otherwise fine
And it runs XP PRO with SP3 and all other updates (including the reg hack for POS system updates)

Thank you for this information, I suspected something like that. I have exactly the same problem as rmh82 (old PC with Athlon XP32000, no SSE2).
I got the same "stuck" download when I try to update the database, apparently Avast tries to update the program first.
What do you call the "online installer" ? You mean : without downloading the full .exe ? I would like to try to check that it solves the issue.

David, that one isn't working on systems that don't support SSE2
Only the online installer for the avast business cloud version will work.

Hi, thanks to both of you !

Should I understand that there is no free version compatible with my SSE2-less brave old PC ? :'(
I was about to buy a recent one anyway, and convert this one to Linux ;)

That isn't what is being said. It appears to be that the offline installer (full 200MB+ installation file) does a/the check for the SSE-2 functionality (which fails) and the online (5-6MB) stub installer doesn't check so it can get installed.

That seems to be an error by the Avast coders ... either the program needs SSE-2 or it doesn't. If it does, then both the Stub Installer and the Offline Installer should do the check. If not, then either installer should be able to function.

Hi,
I've got the same issue :
last night I got a warning from Windows security center that my anti-virus was outdated;
when I check the last virus definition  I have was 160620-2 from the 2016-05-20 :(
No online update possible (same as rmh82 :( )
(My machine is an Atlon Sempron 3000+ With XP SP3)

So I download manually the vpsupd.exe from there :
https://www.avast.com/download-update
and install it without problem

Today no update again :(
download the new vps file from today and install it with no issue

Thanks for the clarification, but unfortunately the stub installer "avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe" fails as well  (like rmh82)

Thanks to Patclash for the workaround ! It works for me also ; however this means that you have to repeat this manual update every time !
And I still have the outdated program version...

10.4.2233 is the latest version that runs on systems without SSE-2.

FWIW; running Windows 7 here with Athlon XP 2000+ processor (non SSE-2 instruction set CPU) and had to revert back to Avast 10.4.2233 (somewhat hard to find Avast 10.4.2233 BTW, not available on HIPPO).

Also, FWIW, I received a "Get Windows 10" on the right side of my task bar.  However; I cannot upgrade to Windows 10 due to my non SSE-2 CPU.

What's so great about having a processor that has a SSE-2 instruction set?  FWIW, SSE2 was first introduced on the Intel Pentium 4.  That will teach us - buy Intel.  :(

Thanks patclash for the work around for obtaining the latest virus definition files.

"I can understand that a video game or a multimedia application needs SSE2/SSE3 support to increase its performances, but I believe an antivirus should not if it breaks the compatibility with old (yet still in use) devices."

Thanks tonyl and bob3160 for the download locations of the outdated Avast 2015 10.4.2233 program.  I found it here http://www.afterdawn.com/software/security/antivirus/avast_free.cfm/2015__10_4_2233_ (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/security/antivirus/avast_free.cfm/2015__10_4_2233_), as well.  I'm considering switching to the Panda Free Antivirus program that I don't believe requires the multimedia SSE2 CPU instruction set on this "old workhorse" PC, formerly my main system.

Besides; an up-to-date Avast program with current antivirus definitions several years ago (on 10-2-2013, to be precise), allowed the Zeroaccess Rootkit to partially install on this PC.  I believe Avast was responsible to limit the rootkit to a partial install of this variant of the Zeroaccess Rootkit.  This PC, now, when first booted into Windows 7 has 100 percent CPU use for approximately one hour.  The other symptom of this variant of the Zeroaccess Rootkit is the following, as reported by the program Rkill:

Code: [Select]
ALERT: ZEROACCESS rootkit symptoms found!

 * ALERT: ZEROACCESS Reparse Point/Junction found!

I have not yet found a way to completely remove this very hard to remove variant of the Zeroaccess Rootkit.

And, just as important, in the last five months I had problems with this PC downloading and installing Windows Updates.  I don't believe this Windows Update problem is related to the installed Zeroaccess Rootkit, but may have something to do with Microsoft .NET (specifically, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2) and the failed patch (KB3135988) install from Windows Update in February 2016.

So, thank goodness this PC, now,  is behind a DSL router.  However, I would really like to get the Zeroaccess Rootkit off this PC.  I have removed part of the Zeroaccess Rootkit using Spybot Search and Destroy capability to detect rootkits.  But, I believe some manual modifications of the system registry file is required to remove the remainder of the rootkit.  And, I have not been able to find anything on the Internet providing specific instructions for these system registry file modifications.

I have also tried numerous other programs (Avast 10.4.2233, rkill 2.8.4.0, TDSSKiller 3.1.0.9, ComboFix 16.4.29.1, RogueKiller 12.2.0.0, Symantec's FixZeroAccess 1.0.1.7, Junkware Removal Tool 8.0.6.0, Spybot Search and Destroy 2.4, RootRepeal 1.3.5.0, and [Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.2.1.1043 - that won't install BTW, probably due to non SSE2 instruction set CPU]) to remove the rootkit, to no avail.

And, of course, I would like to fix the the Windows Update problem.  The "Extended support" -- the period during which Microsoft continues to provide for free security updates for products -- doesn't end until January 14, 2020 for Windows 7 SP1.

Thanks for URL, and yes you're right the Windows Updates problem is well known for Windows 7.  I fixed the two problems (normal Windows Updates and Microsoft .NET Update problems) on my PC using the Microsoft tools found here:

1) How do I reset Windows Update components?
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058)

2) Fix Windows Update errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/947821 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/947821)

and I used this remarkable Microsoft .NET tool to repair my installation of Microsoft .NET on my system -

3) Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/976982 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/976982)

As a result, all Microsoft Windows Update patches are now applied to my PC.

Additionally, this single core processor (AMD Athlon XP 2000+ running at 1.67 GHz) is extremely fast on  Windows 7 with Panda Free Antivirus 2016 (without their spyware browser toolbar installed).

@pogo5,
What does any of this have to do with the topic of this thread ??? "Avast Free update problem Win XP SP3 32 bit system" ???

Sorry, he mentioned something in passing and I answered it.

OK, back on topic, then. One of my XP machines uses Avast 2015 and can't be updated due to the aforementioned hardware restriction. I, too, have noticed that the definitions won't now update either. Thanks mainly to you, I now know how to download a new database manually.

So far, so good.

But I've noticed that, with streaming updates turned on (I always turned them off before), I get several updates per day, while the reported current update version remains the same. Normal auto updates don't work, streaming updates do. So..not being an expert on Avast, I've a couple of questions:

1. Am I right in thinking that streaming updates append entries one by one to the database?
2. Does that mean that, with streaming updates, I don't need any longer to download vpsupd.exe?
3. If I do, is there any way to tell if the version of vpsupd available is newer than the one I already have, before downloading it? It's quite a big download.

Streaming updates keep you protected against the latest discovered infections.
VPS consolidate the streaming updates.
Yes you need both.
