Title: Who scans with AntiVirus Hammer online?
Post by: polonus on January 19, 2006, 09:57:44 PM
Hi forum folks,

AntiVirus Hammer is a standalone online scanner, using Java.
Who uses this open source software, and what is your experience with it? Do you recommend it? Oh the link to go there;

I tried to download hammer but it failed saying Java wasn't up-to-date. But, I downloaded the Java update. I will try again.

Edit :

I got it this time but I can not get it to start. Maybe I am not doing something wrong. I tried to select for a scan of C drive but it does not allow me to add the whole drive for a scan. A little help, polonus?

Hi CharleyO,

Well it must be the sequence of the downloads, tried it from within Flock browser, you have to have JavaWebStart on the desktop first I guess, then download the Virus Hammer.jnlp download, scanned it, then the Java 2RE 1.4. 2_o7. Installer, Accept license, Download components, Unpack Compoinents, Install Components Completed and scan. Well have to try it out myseld, but thought there were folks having experience with it, because open software sometimes can be a good add-on. I use ClamWin for half a year now, and is a good additional second opinion scanner. With this one from sourceforce I had no previous experience. That is why I put the question out on this security forum. Knowledge shared is knowledge gained, don't you agree, friend Charley?

Yes, polonus, I agree that knowledge shared is knowledge gained.    :)

I did download, install, etc JavaWebStart but maybe I didn't have it running at the time I tried the Hammer. So, I will try that. I don't have a second scanner and liked what I read. So, I thought I'd try this one.    :)

Edit :

Ok, I got it to scan but only by listing individual files and/or folders. Perhaps that's the only way it works.

I missed something the first time I read on that sight. It was this ...  VirusSignatures-latest.zip last modified May 29 2004 07:04:54 PM       :(

I got it to work but it only scans individual files, which isn't bad if you just want to scan one file - obviously :)

Hi Staind,

Well it is as always with Open Source Software, lotss of good intentions and clever work and ideas (or coding), but not always the latest technology for performance.
So you have to update the virus definitions as well. Then what I found striking and promising as well was the use of Kerberos there , good quality that is. Well I think the whole project needs a bit of polishing, and needs some re-working on it. But first impression not bad at all. Standalone scanner, just a sec op. Thanks for your opinion Staind, this is welcomed.

When it comes to viruses, that's ancient history....
Checking your data with a tool that's that outdated might be better than not checking it at all but not by much.... :(

True, Bob ... which is why I added the sad smiley at the end of that post.    :)

Hi Bob and Charley,

Is this to conclude that we stumbled here upon just another abandoned Open Source project. Why do developers start such a thing to leave it later or being "bought out"?

Yep ... I would say it has been abandoned since, in 4 months, the definitions will be 2 years old.    :(
