But the privacy issue of AVG worried me a lot. They sells user data.I found MT members reaction on this:https://malwaretips.com/threads/avast-acquires-antivirus-maker-avg.61184/#post-521199 (https://malwaretips.com/threads/avast-acquires-antivirus-maker-avg.61184/#post-521199)

But they'll be owned by Avast so that would obviously change.

This is interesting, I'm assuming Avast would adopt some of AVG's technologies, however, Avast seems to be superior in terms of innovation. I'm going to watch closely and see what happens after the deal is finalized.

Hello!
So, is there a chance that both AVs become one in future?
Thanks!

That's what always happens in the end. I find it very unlikely that they will run both independently and only share useful data about malware between each other. That would be highly inefficient.

November 2014 > AVG Technologies acquires Norman Safeground
http://www.norman.com/business/news_media/news/avg_technologies_acquire__norman__safeground
AVG is now trying to migrate all existing Norman customers over to AVG products
Norman software is slowly phased out and january 2018 it is probaly all gone and Norman is history
And now avast eat AVG and 2-3 years from now AVG is gone .... Survival of the fittest.

Combining the two, should result in one that's better than the rest of the competition. :)

3 ... or 2,5 Blue coat got half of Norman
Norman > AVG > avast

For me paying $1.3 billion is steep, what is it that they are paying for (products and or user base). In either case they are going to want to recover that investment.
Now the $64,000 question (excuse the pun), how do they plan to do that.

Since AVG is already a publicly traded Company, it makes getting listed on the Exchange easier. :)

I though Avast had gone though this process some time ago, but ended up with some investors ?
-
Avast decided not too, since the market at that time, was not favorable.

No need to apologize, and no need to start the caps lock shouting thanks.
Just my thoughts, not based as its still in the pipeline.
totally off base ? stupid comment.

You can sleep happily without this fear :)

Why would avast! change their business model which apparently works? If it wasn't working, they wouldn't be expanding this much and buying a rival company for 1.3 billion. That's not something done by companies that struggle... Of course things change and adapt so it can't be for certain, but as it is, I don't think much will change in terms of avast!'s business model.
-
Avast! is buying avg ::)
What is it going to be Now? AVG+Avast!
Interesting enough,I want to see if this improves avast! detection ratios by any strike in the sky.I hope it brings good to the users at the end of the day rather than all hype :)

I thought the remark was a bit childish there and isn't any more mature here. :)

Agreed +1
It's amazing how many twits will crawl out from under their rock to state some stupid remark they think is humorous.
-
When you pay $1.3 billion for a company I somehow doubt it is going to be a merged or reinvented name, what would be the point of that.
-
They'll just assimilate it inside avast! brand. Anything else would make no sense...

Due to the nature of the (possible) acquisition, rules and regulations, there is nothing to be commented or disclosed at the moment.
Only official and public information is allowed.
-
As Vlk said somewhere else, the acquisition is under inspection of regulators to see if everything is in order. Until that is done, they can't really release any statements. When regulators give a clear go, acquisition will be confirmed and carried out. After that, you can expect more public announcements about the deal itself and future plans for both, avast! and AVG.

Interesting, they've decided to keep both brands separate while merging the protection capabilities. A bit surprising move, but then again not so much. If they sacked AVG, people who loved it might jump ship with competitor. Where now, nothing will really change except AVG getting even better protection wise. So, existing avast! users will be happy as well as existing AVG users. Things may change in the future, but for now, it kinda sounds logical.
Can't wait to see what they plan for early 2017 as mentioned in the PR release. AVG as well as avast! made huge strides in protection, being merged, they might actually become the most serious threat to BitDefender and Kaspersky who ruled all the protection tests so far. It's going to be interesting for sure :)
-
I am curious what this means for Avast's wish to go to the Stock Market, as AVG has already a notation on it.
Greetz, Red.
-
One thing that avast can learn from avg is how to use ads for their products.
with the largest consumer installed base in the world
I guess it is just how you look at it.
Kaspersky also is protecting over 400m users.
And with the amount of avast users dropping for many months....

It really looks not that good.
Also why is Avast still using SMF? Why not lets say XenForo which alot more Community related things like status updates for example.

Yeah it's certainly a very strong colour, the Avast forum has always had to much white space as well and I find it give me headaches after to long here.

And if we are to still keep using SMF it should at least be updated to the latest version 2.0.12

SMF isnt the only thing that needs an Upgrade. And SMF sucks BTW
-
Nothing wrong with SMF itself, it works fine and other features could be added to it to make it more usable like Simple Portal.

Delete it then :P
No seriously i hope Avast will move into a better direction of security and not of data collection.

It's only marketing that counts.

Congrats avast, I like your new icon and I'm glad to hear the good news that you acquired avg.

I hope they'll make a complete crossover of features. avast! will finally gain a proper behavior blocker and enhanced cloud from AVG and AVG will gain new features like CyberCapture and hardened mode in addition to everything it already has plus a lot of smaller features. Only thing I'm afraid of will be the division between two products on the shoulders of the consumer. Which one to use, AVG or avast!. In general I have plans to stick with avast!, but I think I'll be reinstalling both quite often hehe XD

I may be running Avast on some systems and try out AVG on some others. Eventually there will only be one product, Avast. :)

As for Malware analysis and Cloud features like CyberCapture, it should be not that hard to combine/join efforts imo.

In the freemium market, the only other meaningful players are Microsoft, Qihoo, and Avira in Germany. Avira’s pretty small in Germany these days.
So, what does Avira have that makes it so good in detection?
