A little while ago I upgraded, via interface, avast from 2272 to 2276.
I now returns an error "in the background service is not running"
I tried a clean reinstall (I downloaded the offline installer) without success, the same error.
Now unfortunately, as you can see from the attached, they are without protection.
Before upgrading I did a virus scan, clean pc.
Can I have the older version link (2272) for avast PC (Windows 7 SP1) since I had no errors, waiting for the next version.
The problem came out immediately, just restart your system.

I have the same problem as written above with Avast Free 12.2.2276 on a Windows 7 (Ultimate) PC. I only use Avast Web, file and mail protection; nothing else. I'am using the in program update function and gets this fault (1 hr. ago).

I have taken a look at the services and the (only) Avast services is running while is written on the error screen that the background services is not running --> Start the services.
I stopped this service manually and after that use the button that Avast must solve the problem "Alles oplossen" / Solve everything.
The services is started but the problem stays. Strange thing is that the AvastUpdater.exe and AvBugReport report.exe access my firewall (a new programm version so I have to give these 2 programs a go to go outside). So, the services is running and (some) Avast background programs are running.

Uninstalling the program, restart the PC and installing it again (off line version). Problem stays.
Avast Web, file and mail protection are off. Cannot switch on. The program ask to restart the PC. Anter that the same problem.
In the Program section of update it says Release date 1-1-1970 1:00:00 and ther build is 12.2.3126.2

Please give me the link of the previous version as soon as possible. I'am not protected now.

Hello,
I have the same problem.
Also, the file "avastui.exe" is not signed.
I had to install another AV to get on line.
I have re-installed a total of 3 times now. (offline and web)

I am having the exact same problem I am using Windows 10 which I just upgraded to the other day.  I ran scans this morning and everything came up clean.  Noticed the update to program and ran it and since then my system has been unprotected.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled and also did uninstall with the utility and still no dice.  I actually tried it on a laptop I don't use much as well and same problem there the laptop is using windows 8.1.

Just to note in the Program section of update it says Release date 12/31/1969 4:00:00 PM.  Clock in both of my systems are fine.

Exact same problem here.  Tried repairing, uninstalling, clearing, and reinstalling - same problem.  Avast services not running.  Problem started about 1 hour ago.  Running Windows 10 Pro 64bit on an AMD 8 core processor.

Experiencing exact same problem as mentioned by others on this post: I have 3 PC's running Win7 Pro, Win10 Home & Win10 Pro...all 64-bit!

ETA on FIX, AVAST???

Same issue as well on 3 computers, 2 freshly loaded notebooks - 1 with windows 7, 1 with windows 10, and my desktop with windows 10.

Fresh installs on both notebooks from avast.com, and update in program with windows 10 desktop.

Same here, using Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and Antivirus Pro.
The issue occurs today around 11:00 PM CEST, and still persists.

Tried the following:

- Repair Avast - problem persists
- Normal Uninstall
- Reinstall Free Version - Works!
- Insert Activation Code for Pro - Needs restart
- After Restart - Problem is back
- Normal Uninstall
- Avast Cleanup in Windows safe mode
- Reinstall Free Version - Works!
- manual Windows restart  - Problem is back

The problem occurs, if the pc is restartet after any installation process (reinstall oder activation of the Pro version).

Count me in as well.  I have a tablet PC (win10 64bit) that hasn't even been turned on in about 3 months and is a 100% clean install of Win10, and 2 others (same tablet configuration), all 3 having same problems.  Service won't run.

I also have another problem in that now, none of them will run Windows update either.  It checks for updates, says downloading updates, but the download fails on all three.  Afraid to try this on any other computers or tablets at the moment but even after uninstalling Avast, Windows 10 won't update.  I have a tablet here without Avast on it (installed Win10 3 weeks ago) and it can update just fine - its the exact same config as the other 3 tablets.  Something very wrong.

edit: Ignore the Windows update problems - I was able to restart the Windows Update service on all 3 with Avast and updates are working.

Updated to Windows 10 Pro x64, the issue reappears. Reinstalled, rebooted, repaired, nothing works. Great Friday :-(

Looks like Avast just pulled a McAfee. WTF happened to my license? Shows Active Premier subscription as Active, yet the rest is blank?

All this after receiving multiple Avast pop-up spam messages to restart after the latest update.

Luckily JAJAJAAJAJ is not me alone, I had to restore the system and return to the previous. This version new run well on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit motherboard ASUS, but instead a laptop Lenovo Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit gives that error background service and or repairing or reinstalling nothing is arranged that, solution ? in my case and restore the previous system and now as well.

Same problem here, did a clean install of Windows 10 (last day of free upgrade), downloaded the latest Avast to the clean system and no protection, won't let me install license file, can't update the program or virus DB's... Tried multiple restarts, uninstalled several times using the uninstall utility.. tried installing different versions (free, internet security etc.) all result in me being told I'm not protected.. the built in resolve button does nothing...

I thought it was Windows 10 initially but after seeing the posts here am relieved that it's Avast, however VERY upset that such a release could be made public, I hope Avast think about extending the licenses of paying customers as a little compensation (as I've personally spent around 4 hours trying to fix the problem and I'm sure most people here have spent a good chunk of time on it themselves).

Same problem here although it didn't start happening until I upgraded my Windows 10-64bit machine from 8GB to 32GB this afternoon. Another issue I've had since Nitro upgrade is every time I reboot I get a pop-up box that tells me "Firewall Mode Changed.  We detected the network (network-name) and automatically changed the Firewall Mode to Private/Low Risk zone".

Until this is fixed I've uninstalled the product and am using Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.

Avast Free crashed (as mentioned above) in four PCs, Asus, Acer and Vaio, running Win10 32/64 bit, plus 2 VMs running WinXP and Win7_64.

Using Avast for allways (10 yrs, maybe), got really scared to see my "virus protection" unprotected... Shame.

Have you tried an Avast repair and rebooted?

I would advise a clean install to users to rule out corrupt installs.

You need to perform a clean install:

1.Download your version of avast! and the avastclear tool.

Same problem. I manually update Avast Free and after updating to this version (12.2.2276) it did not work at all. I uninstalled with Control Panel (and Avast Clear in Safe Mode) and reinstalled twice with no improvement. Avast is now uninstalled and I am using Windows Defender.

Confirmed I am having this problem too with Win7 Pro SP1.  Followed all steps from the previous post with safe mode uninstall and reinstall. Same missing data from the Subscription page and the program date is set for 12/31/1969 7:00:00 PM 12.22.2276 (build 12.2.3126.2)

It seems like there is an issue with 12.2 2276 on build 12.2.3126

This could be due to the emergency updater or just a bad update.

I will try to get some attention to this.

Also, at some point, I've got some "language error" on some DLL file.
(Sorry, I haven't a print screen of it)

Does anybody see ou saw this 1969 date?

Sorry about that.

There's an issue with V12.2.2276 (build 12.2.3126.2) as figured out and neither a clean install or repair will fix it until Avast fixes the issue.

I have edited my earlier clean install post.

The same problem on my Laptop After upgrading to Windows 10 Pro before 7 hours ago all Avast Premier shields "5" dose not work, can't update it, Almost all Avast is not working  :'(

As noted: Doing a clean install doesn't work, doing a repair doesn't work. The only way around this is to go back to the over version (before the update). Unfortunately the Avast support form and many sites don't have the older version available and I had to go searching online for the older version and it works, back up and running. If Avast has any compassion towards its customers they should at least have the older version available on here to keep us protected until the problem is fixed, its the ethical thing to do.

I'm having much of the same problem as everyone else in this thread. Clean reinstall will not solve the problem, and each time the Virus Scanner will not start. Also with Premium (which I have subscription for) the background shields will not activate and there seems to be a conflict with Win10. Sometimes the Install Date is listed as 12/31/1969. So far I'm relying on WinDef and MB for protection until this problem hopefully gets resolved, because honestly I like Avast ever since I switched to it.

As with everyone else, im having problems too with the latest update - even the beta.
But my problem is I get a blue screen with Windows 10. Previous versions worked fine. Installing a previous version works fine until it decides to want to do the program update, it downloads, begins to install, then about the 65% mark it blue screens on me.

I am also having the same exact problems and have tried un-installing and re-installing the program three times.  Currently my laptop has no anti-virus protection.  Does Avast have a customer support team that monitors this forum??

Same problem for two windows 10 computers over here. 4 pages already but no Avast staff says anything while it looks like basically all just updated Avast antivirus is not working worldwide and it makes us 100% un protected? How to trust Avast can really protect us from virus since it looks like the staff does not react to stuff like 24 hours!?

Use Avast! Clear and then install an older version, but as has been noted, disconnect from the web, turn auto program updates OFF, and then reconnect.

Even if I do the download of 2272 (211 mb) when I make the download tells me 219 mb, I still download the last, in 2276.

Edited to add: And I checked the version below it "Avast! Free Antivirus 11.2.2262" but it's also 219mb and "Properties" lists the file version as 12.2.3126.0. But although it's the same version, it isn't listed as build 12.2.3126.2 which appears to be the version with the problem.

Thanks, NON. I agree with you. Perhaps it's best to wait for the official fix. I have other computers that have yet to be updated, so I can always use one of them as a backup. Hopefully by this time tomorrow, the problem will be resolved.

In the past I would always wait a couple of weeks before updates--just in case there were undiscovered bugs--but unfortunately not this time. Live and learn.

It seems the AvastSvc.exe is functioning normally, only GUI is bugged.
I tested on my Vista machine and successfully reproduced the issue, and Avast blocks eicar as usual, concluding AvastSvc itself is working.

I found AvastUI.exe is not signed as usual, and this might be the cause of the problem, because Avast seems blocking access to its service from untrusted modules using self-defense.
If I disable self-defense module via editing avast5.ini file and restart AvastUI.exe, AvastUI shows avast is working.
Can you explain step by step?
I wrote the step below, but I would suggest to wait the official resolution.


1. Open the following file using notepad
Code: [Select]
C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\avast5.ini
2. Find the following line and change the value to 0
Code: [Select]
[SelfDefense]
SelfDefense=1

3. Save the file. Avast will warn you twice, make sure to allow both.

4. Run task manager and kill AvastUI.exe.

5. Restart AvastUI.exe from Start Menu -> All Programs -> Avast Software -> Avast Free Antivirus (or something).

(6. Don't forget to enable Self-defense after official resolution is provided.)

I have a paid Avast Internet Security, on Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit., and it has happened to me also.  It also happened on two other computers that I have worked on in the last couple days. One was Win10 Home and other was Win 7.  I am patiently waiting for Avast to fix this problem for my computer,  but on computers I am working on in my business, I will have to install something other than Avast (free or paid).  I put Avira on the Win 7 computer.  I can't let a computer go back to customer with an error showing on the antivirus program,  they wouldn't stand for it.  I hope this gets fixed...FAST.  I have been using Avast Internet Security on my pc for about 5 years,  this is the most trouble I have ever had with this program.  I have put Free Avast on hundreds of computers, now they are calling me to fix this problem.
  On another note,  about 3 or 4 weeks ago,  I have no longer been able to save the Avast Configuration file to any computer.

Update from 'Free Edition 12.1.2272' to '12.2.2276' on July 29 was no problem at all (W7 Pro SP1). But "Windows Defender" was put to "Off" and could not be restarted. By all means! I just use 'Defender' as a backup for scans on suspicious files or incidents additional to "Avast" and "Malwarebytes". And it should be my decision, whether to keep it or to cut it off.
A clean reinstall of the latest  'Avast Free' (v.12.2.2276 / b.12.2.3126.0) after a thorough "Revo"-uninstall did not help. Already upset by the gazillions of "False Positives" regarding (e.g.) many of the valuable "Nirsoft"-apps and their installers by "Avast" in the last years I decided to move on and installed the free version of "BitDefender" (1.0.21.1109, W64). Because it has a very good reputation. After a few tests I unfortunately found out, that at least this free version is highly unconfigurable. Put to a folder-scan it not only found the same "False Positives" in my "Nirsoft"-SW-repository on my rig, it deleted part of the installers right away. Only one was sent to the "Virus Chest" and could then be restored & excluded. And I could not find a way to configure a different behavior regarding 'PUP's' or other settings. So again a "Revo"-uninstall it was and finally I reverted to the second-to-last version of 'Avast Free' (v. 11.2.2262 / b. 11.2.2738.0). Because this was the last version featuring the "Statistics" and the direct access of the "Virus Chest" via the "Main Window". Which is convenient due to the recurring false-positive-incidents. No need to mention, "Windows Defender" worked as ever. By the way, "BitDefender" cut it off either. But it could easily be restarted and used. And yes, I know that I could stop "Avast" to search for 'PUP's' altogether or to adjust it's reactions to a find. But as I download and try a lot of software, I still want to use this feature to be alerted and on the safe side; just in case...

Your computer, your choice. If deciding to stop using your AV because it disabled something you already receive that conflicts with that AV, then so be it. Good luck enjoy your new choice. :)
