i updated today to the last version of avast free antivirus (12.2.2276) and i encounter this error after every install.

tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times using the avast uninstall utility but without any result.
i also installed malwarebytes anti malware and did a full scan bechause i thought maybe is a virus that prevents avast from working properly but it found nothing at all.
i guess is something related to the last version, i will try to install the previous version taken from filehippo and see if error persists.
my OS is windows 7 x64 service pack 1 with the lastest updates installed.

Same issue on my Windows 7 x64, not solved.
Currently updated to Windows 10 Pro x64, same issue. Rebooted, repaired, reinstalled to no effect.
-
I'm having the same problem on 2 PCs, both running Windows XP SP3. It appears after a reboot that the service is running but then it quits, maybe because the virus definitions are trying to update. The update never finishes and I can't manually start the service either.
-
Same issue here and I am on avast pro, what is going on with this program, when I try to input my license I get this:
-
I think there is a general problem with the last update , look at the other topics on the forum ;)

Yap. Its like with previous version and exporting of settings, some people had the issue some didn't I did on half and half of my machines.
Now this update fixed that but some of my machines have license issues some don't.
-
I am experiencing the exact same issue on my Win8.1 machine. After updating to latest version, it now claims that the Avast service is not running and all shields are disabled. By checking the active services it can be seen that the avast service is indeed running, so I'm left confused and bewildered.
-
I am getting this too. I am on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. The log file says something about Log.db being locked. Not sure if that is relevant.
-
Yes avast service is running, you can check in Control Panel/Services, also I can see under subscription it shows "ACTIVE" but everything is disabled, so avast has a problem.
-
Same issue on my dads machine. Guess I move him over to something else until this is resolved. I'm surprised such a apparently widespread issue got through beta testing.

I updated 3 Win7 Pro SP1 laptops from AIS 12.1.2272 to AIS 12.2.2276 via the AvastUI yesterday seemingly without incident. The installs preformed well.
However, this afternoon after leaving this laptop on standby for an hour and then activating it, I also got the AvastBackground Service is not running and Firewall off. They would not restart nor would a Windows restart clear the issue. I wound up uninstalling 12.2.2276 and reverting back to AIS 12.1.2272 for now.
-
I've been able to contact someone from Avast. Hopefully she can reach the right party to solve this problem. Please be a little patient. It's the weekend and the middle of the night in Prague.
-
I payed for 24/7 protection. I don't care if it's the weekend!

Calm down please.

Read what's already been posted please. There is a problem. Repair isn't going to fix that problem.

I am having the same problem, did the new update, restarted computer, now Avast is completely broken, says all the background services aren't running, and when I click resolve it doesn't fix it. I'm using Windows 10 64 bit and it's the Avast Internet Security.
-
I have confirmed that the latest version was causing the issue for me. Here's what I did to downgrade and prevent it from automatically upgrading to the latest version again:
- I logged into My Avast to download my License (https://my.avast.com/en-us/#licenses) (file: "license.avastlic").
- I downloaded the offline installer for the previous version of Avast Internet Security from FileHippo (http://filehippo.com/download_avast_internet_security/) (in my case 12.1.2272 (http://filehippo.com/download_avast_internet_security/68669/)).
- I downloaded and ran the Avast Uninstall Utility (https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) (file: "avastclear.exe"); this will reboot you into Safe Mode.
- After the uninstall and rebooting normally, I ran the offline installer and disconnected from the Internet immediately after the initial trial license activation before it had a chance to download the latest version (because Auto-update is enabled by default on a clean install). To do this, I simply disabled my LAN adapter, but you may choose whatever method works for you.
- After the install and initial activation completed and while my Internet was still disconnected, I went into the Update settings for the "Program" section and changed it from "Automatic Update" to "Ask when update is downloaded," but any of the other options will work.
- Now in the Subscription settings I loaded my license that I downloaded earlier.
- I restarted once again in order to be absolute sure that the setting had taken effect before reconnecting to the Internet.
- Finally, I reconnected to the Internet.
Note: I also chose not to log into my account on the client for now as I was concerned that it might sync some old settings and re-enable Auto-update. I will probably leave it like that until this bug is fixed, hopefully in the next version.
Cheers! ;)

I found a similar way to Matthew81's:
1, Use uninstall utility to remove 2276version.
2. Download ver2276 offline installer (latest), DISCONNECTED FROM INTERNET FROM NOW.
3. Run the installer, turn off auto-update, and restart.
4. Turn off avast shields control.
5. It's OK to connected and get license back.
Maybe avast had just killed its own AvastEmUpdate.exe so there's no way to start background service.
UPDATE: After several hours I restarted computer and this happened again, FAILED.

I too have had the same problem as you all have had. My biggest disappointment came when I contacted Avast about the problem and was told to fix the issue that I could purchase tech support for 100 + dollars to 300 dollars when it's their fault and I still have 8 months left on my paid subscription. I believe that that is shoddy buisness. I am running windows XP SP 3 . I will see if I can fix it with some of this advise. I may be firing Avast if this is how they operate.!!!
-
I am also having the same exact problems and have tried un-installing and re-installing the program three times. Currently my laptop has no anti-virus protection. Does Avast have a customer support team that monitors this forum?

the same problem i updated today to the last version of avast premier antivirus (12.2.2276) and i encounter this error after every install.
date to update 31/12/1969 18:00:00
And have tried un-installing and re-installing the program
W10 64bit.
-
I Tried to repir an uninstall and reinstall an i had te same problem.
W10 64 bits
-
The problem is the same, after the update stopped all screens, background service does not start. Attempts to include failed. Not helped remove and new installation of Avast free antivirus. Requested support, it remains to wait for decisions from the developer.
-
Just an interesting note to throw out there, while my desktop flopped with the new update my laptop is running it without any issues what-so-ever... ???
Desktop has been reverted to previous version but leaving the laptop running with no issues.
(And yes, already submited a ticket for the desktop before the revert.)

Must be a bug from the beta version which was undiscovered or missed out. I am having the same issue. It sucks >:(
-
FWIW, I upgraded my laptop yesterday from W7 to W10 Home.
And while I was at it, decided to update Avast to the latest (.2276) version as well.
Usually, I'm very cautious about upgrading AV packages, because of the risks and the tremendous waste of time when something goes wrong, but by the time I checked the forums there were no signs of trouble yet.
I was simply too quick. :(
At the time of this writing, there is a sticky at the top of this thread saying that they are aware of the problem and are working on it...
Edit: extra post.
UPDATE:
The problem lies in the communication between the GUI and the Avast services.
This means that despite the error message you see in Avast, the services/shields/protection are active and running.
A fix should be released soon..
-
Similar to other Win 7 users I had the update yesterday and exactly the symptoms reporting Firewall off, 5 shields disabled. Tried both repairing and reinstalling to no avail.
Unable to perform even smart scan or any type of virus scan. It appears we do have an issue with the latest update.

I haven't got this issue. Windows 7 Home Premium and the latest Avast free.

On this laptop that I reverted to AIS 12.1.2272, should it be safe to again update via AvastUI without having the "unprotected" issue again? I do have AIS 12.2.2276 "12.2.3126.0" still downloaded in case that would be better.

This is working for me THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is avast working hard to fix this ? I mean, I would ask a refund If I dont have any news next monday. This is not acceptable.

This is now fixed. All fresh installations are OK from now on.
For existing affected users, if it doesn't update automatically, the fastest way to fix it is to run C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastEmUpdate.exe and then reboot.
-
Okay I will let the update happen, I reply here if its working.
-
Its working now. Thank you.

That does offer some clarification, thanks. I'm going to do an custom overinstall with the new offline installer. That should be fine. The other 2 laptops didn't suffer from the problem, as they were turned off when the bad emupdate came down.
-
Thanks for the fix! Up and running!
-
Well many users are now getting the same issues are you guys did. https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=190625.0
It was stated by a avast memeber this is now fixed, but it seems the problem has returned

I'm having this problem, I noticed this happening yesterday for the first time.
Avast keeps turning the service off by itself.
I am running WIN10 pro.
Definitions 160907-1
Program 12.3.2280 (build 12.3.3154.2)

Hi aliabbasgaming and newerd,
Your issue is not related to this problem but most probably to this one https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=190625.0
For the sake of avoiding confusion I will lock this old-and-already-fixed thread.
