Avast Free 2015.10.2.2218 is the last version I have got to work on Vista.
Every version that has been released since then blocks internet browsing unless I turn off the shields.
Avast will not even auto-update the definitions. Again turning off the shields is the only way to get the program to connect to the servers and download the VPS updates.
I have tried reinstalling, removing (with Avastclear) and reinstalling, repairing. I've used the in-program updater and standalone install but Avast will just not work. Avast installs, everything appears OK with no install errors, but I cannot access the internet (when shields are on) with either Internet Explorer 9 or Firefox 47.0.1. I have Windows Firewall running.
I have lost count of the number of years that Avast has provided me with faultless service, but alas it appears, no more.
Anyone else seeing this on Vista?
What could be the problem?
Thanks

Sounds like your firewall is blocking Avast. Most likely the Webshield.

Thanks for the response.
Adding an exception in Windows Firewall for Avast makes no difference.
Turning off Windows Firewall completely also makes no difference.

Is or was there any other security (related) software installed ?

I used to have Online Armor, but that's been uninstalled

I suggest to run Farbar and attach two log files from it to your next post. (FRST.txt and Addition.txt)
Let's if we can find something.
