So this started happening about 2 days ago, when ever i leave my computer or go play any kind of game on it, when i come back to the desktop i notice that the avast icon have a "x" on it, so i aways have to open the program and reactivate all the security modules which was deactivated, just to come back 1 hour later to see that it had happened again.
What it could be?, tried uninstalling and installing again, but it didn't work and i looked for a similar problem in the internet but i found nothing.

What OS/SP ?
What exact version of avast ?
Any other security (related) software installed ? (or was there)
Already performed a repair of avast ? (if not, do so)
Already performed a clean installation of avast ? (If not, do so if the repair doesn't solve it)

I'm using Windows 7 x64
The avast's version is 12.3.2280 (build 12.3.3154.0)
Not currently using any other security software, i've aways used avast for it.
Not actually performed a repair, but i removed it from my computer using the uninstaller, and downloaded/installed it on my computer again, so i don't know it this counts.

Having the same issue. Running on Windows 10 64 bit.
-
Just started happening to me as well out of nowhere, Windows 10 anniversary update x64. Nothing has changed in my system at all. I have tried repairing/fully reinstalling and it still deactivates after a little while.
Have to click fix, it's ok for a little while and then it does it again.
I have the Pro antivirus only.
Once it deactivated it pops up with the banner underneath stating extend to a 60 day trial. It's as if the license is constantly expiring.
Only just renewed this a few days ago.

Hi, I have the same issue. Sometimes Avast stop to protect me with a red X and message says background protection of Avast was stopped and I have to manualy fix. This is very bad for an antivirus, should not happen.
No process should have right to stop Avast, maybe Avast crash or not work well.
I AM on Windows 10 Pro 64 bit.
Avast Free versione 12.3.2280 (build 12.3.3154.2)
-
Same issue. Windows 10 x64, build 12.3.2280. It keeps stopping itself. Repair did not work, nor did a clean install using aswclear. Has to be a bad update or something, this windows install is less than a week old.
-
I am having the same issue on my main pc and my other two pc's, glad am not alone. It randomly just pops up saying you are unprotected click to resolve. I never expereienced this issue before, whats going on. I have the latest update installed Build: 12.3.3154.2 and vesrion: 12.3.2280, Windows 10 anniversary update 64bit. I have never encountered this before and nothing new has been added in regards to software or hardware. I saw this happening on two of my other pc's which kinda of confirms this is a bug. Can you please tell us why this happening and will it be fixed?. I have a clean install of the windows 10 anniversary udate on my pc so i dont understand what is happening.
PS: It just happened to me again :/ and i had to click on enable all from the avast interface
-
Thank god I'm not the only one suffering from this. Have tried all the above and was beginning to get worried. Running the Windows 10 Anniversary as well.

Me too, hope will be released asap an update. Also I AM scared about the security of Avast. I think they should improve the protection process to not be ended. In this case there are one or more issue who stop the background protection but why is the user have to click on fix and is not Avast who resume asap the protection? This is not good. PC are exposed to attack until user can't see a small x near the time on the avast icon and maybe click on it for see they are not protected and fix manually.
This is very strong issue.

Perform a clean installation of the latest version and check if the problem is solved.
Not only remove avast through the control panel, but also use aswclear.

Hi there,
sorry for troubles and also thanks for report. Can anyone affected send me zipped log folders? C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log & C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Persistent Data\Avast\Logs . As this bug is not known for me, it would be very useful for further analysis and it would accelerate the fixing process.
Thanks again,
B.

Ron I don't know if your log is good. You have not zipped the entire two log folder... seems you put just some files.
I have sent the entire two log zipped folder via ticket to Avast.

I'd say either the emergency update feature or VPS as you said.
This issue should never have happened in the first place.

Hello,
current status is that the issue should be fixed with next release of VPS which is being built right now. It takes some time, so it should be our at around 9 pm (GMT+2) the latest. Internal tracking number of the bug is ASCU-138.
I will keep you posted.
Cheers,
B.

So AVAST messed up their Anti-Virus Software again ?
That's great, especially for a Software which should protect my PC from damage and not messed up my System.
Well, at last they inform the Users, admit their error and try to fix it.
-
The software is not there to protect a system.
It is there to help protecting a system.
Security starts with the user, not with hardware and/or software.
-
I would have sent my logs, but I formated my pc and re installed my OS so there are no logs when the issue happens again i will send u the logs, Thanks avast team.

This happened back in 2010 and the issue was fixed and now its back again, i guess bugs happen and we can just inform avast and they fix it :) its like this with pretty much ever software, am glad its been fixed.

Endt Take ur time dont feel rushed because some people woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Those guys giving avast a hard time chill, nearly every software has some form of bugs. Everything cant be perfect, we are all human. If your going to give avast a hard time go build ur own perfect antivirus and use it. The avast team are doing there upmost best to fix the issue chill and wait, its not like its the end of the word.
-
To put things in perspective : Definitely not everyone is suffering from this bug.
Me neither, and so far none of the people I help.
Greetz, Red.
-
And finally, it is out.
Thanks for your patience,
B.
-
To manually update to VPS 160908-2 : Avast - Settings - Update - Virus Definitions - Update - OK.
Greetz, Red.
-
Is the fix for Virus Definitions or Program?
My definitions updated today at 1:09 Pm PST to 160908-2
My Program says it is up to date with the 8/19 update.
Thanks!
-
If your VPS (virus database update) is at 160908-2 then the issue is fixed.
-
VPS updates contains virus definitions - and/or small program updates.
Greetz, Red.

This is also happening to me Avast Pro Windows 10 and will not restart or update or do anything. Help!
-
My Avast Pro wont start up, won't turn on, even after repair and reinstall it has switched off and won't turn on and won't update. I have tried everything I can think of and this is an issue that seems to have no permanent fix. I am wasting huge amounts of my time trying to resolve it when this should never be of concern. I payed for something I can't get.

Do you have any other security app running alongside with Avast? (firewall, another antimalware...?).
Is your computer virus free?
Anyway, I suggest an installation from scratch:
1. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it.
2. Download the latest Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. (Optional) If you want, save your Avast settings for later restoration (Settings > Maintenance > Back up).
4. Uninstall Avast from Control Panel (if possible) and reboot.
5. Run the Avast Uninstall Utility saved on 1 in and follow the instructions. Reboot Windows in Safe Mode, uninstall Avast and then reboot in Normal Mode again.
6. Install Avast using the setup saved on 2. Register your free copy or add the license key for the paid versions. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.
Please, be patient, boot when it's said to boot...

You have to look at his other posts, in the Polski sub-forum, he is experiencing the same problems of Shields running in the background being turned off.
He has had a response and has replied to that - the problem could be previous AV - McAfee was uninstalled, but there may be remnants. https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=195187.0 (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=195187.0)

Simply following the link I posted would have given him the ability to do exactly that. :)

Yes, but given there is only a link (and a shortcut one at that) and no text to indicate what is on that link.
e.g. "How to successfully install Avast and ensure you remove old third-party antivirus software first" etc.
