Title: No Beta ?
Post by: Rednose on September 10, 2016, 12:31:41 AM
I am not on the Beta channel, but there seems to be no Beta at all ?

Well no announcement in the Beta sub-forum that I have seen.

With the program update frequency, reportedly one a month, I would have expected a permanent beta testing state working on the next months update.

Still waiting on Edge Extension for Avast Password support, maybe that will come in Septembers build, as well as other goodies, but so far no new beta, so just waits patiently lol,  (On desktop I only use Edge Browser or Internet Explorer)

I would expect new beta version to release next week. There's probably some bigger features they're working on (or it's #TooHotToCode weather).

Could be they a holding things down till the take-over of AVG is a fact.
I can imagine there is a lot to test when they implement parts of AVG into avast.

If the acquisition of AVG is what holding them down, I would be worried.
There are more than enough bugs/issues that need to be fixed.

If it is done the same way as when AVG  acquired norman safeground in 2014 then this is something that take time
AVG / Norman is still a ongoing process

Hi guys,

yes there is some delay in beta, we plan next one to the beginning of October.  Thank you for your patience. Some major bugs are fixed immediately via microupdate without the beta testing.

Now that Be Secure mentions Cyber Capture, and I am thinking back about what Vlk told us, this could very well be the reason for the delay.

It's a bit unusual, but given the timeframe, I think they are preparing avast! 13.x, a major release, that's why there is no beta version yet.

Me, too, was under the impression betas were to be released as often as weekly.  Seems a hiatus but then again, I've never done a beta testing as the oem version will come in soon enough and with bugs in it anyway.

Do hope CyberCapture works in the latest version.

There is no more an Avast Year version.
There are monthly updates releasing features and improvements all over the year.
They are proceeded by (almost) weekly betas.

Cyber Capture, and the Firewall for paid users, should be the main focus for this release imo.

About CyberCapture,

I am curious how they are going to implement it.
There has been RejZoR's suggestion and Vlk's answer :

@Vlk I have one more idea. Currently, when CyberCapture locks the file into custody, you can opt to run it without waiting for verdict. You could add "Run in Sandbox" as an option for Pro, Internet Security and Premier editions since they already employ sandbox tech. This way users can run the suspicious stuff risk free in an isolated environment (if the app will work in it of course since not all do) even before they get definitive answer from CyberCapture servers. This way you add additional layer of security when users decide to run it anyway.

Thanks, that sounds like something that could be implemented very easily.

Vlk

And I have a suggestion elaborating on this :

Thinking about it ...

What about making the Sandbox available for Avast Free users as well, with the only possibility to run an unknown - and not-analysed executable in it ?
Just a suggestion :)

I think you misread/misunderstand my post.
Of course is CyberCapture for all users, Free and Paid.
But the Firewall is only for AIS and Premier users.

Hi Red,

my best guess is that the delay is related to the takeover of AVG.

Also in the AVG Forum I have been told that when AVG releases it's 2017 products, there may be a change in the program name or the change in the program name may happen early next year, but they didn't receive any information. I will check back at a later stage when they release AVG 2017 and I install it in my desktop computer.

I think the name change for AVG will involve adding "avast" branding to it in a smaller font, just so they connect both together.

As far as I know Avast wanted to redesign Statistics.
But I don't know how - and when that will be implemented :-\

First the Statistics for my devices on my.avast.com aren't working (information for this device not available). A short time later I whilst information for the device was available, but clicking on the Statistics for any of the devices resulted in a blank page. Not great.

That said the Statistics for the Device if I remember correctly was completely different to that within the avastUI before they were removed.

Avast did say they were going to redesign the UI statistics (it certainly needed it, insufficient detailed information to be of use), but didn't give an expected time-frame for this.

I agree with the disappointment of this beta, having read some of the posts in the new 2281 beta topic. Although I have downloaded the off-line installer, it is still sitting in my download folder and looks like it will be a while before I install this.

It really is a disappointment to see new problems have been introduced (Known issues) and then as you say old faults haven't been resolved.

The colour aside from being purple/mauve it is a washed out colour not clear and with white text isn't great for clarity, some of the white text looks out of focus.

Something that avast have been promising for years is to revamp the avast tray icon context menu. Can anyone confirm if this has changed in any way ?

Yes, very disappointing, I just wonder what they have being doing that they were unable to release this beta in October as was expected.

I think you need to look at it from a wider angle. Beta is beta and it has always issues, even released product does.

If they would fix all known problems, we would have most likely waited another month to see new beta. Like they said, they will continue improving the UI based on feedback so there's nothing wrong with it. I quite like it and can only see it getting better with suggestions.

It should be easier to "fine tune" as they stated.

1.  But when there was no problem in that area before and no apparent changes in function why would it subsequently break it. That really should have been found at Q&A and or Alpha testing before being released to Beta.

2.  I have no problem waiting than see something rushed out the door to meet a deadline and find missing and or broken functions.
