Title: Avast Free GUI not showing in windows 10
Post by: REDACTED on September 13, 2016, 06:25:58 PM
This is just an incompatibility note. The avast service is running, but more than half of the time when it comes to starting up the machine,the avast gui does not load next to the clock in the taskbar. The gui can be started manually however, and everything seems to work ok. I have binisoft WFC, crystaldiskinfo and winpatrol on startup. The avast service is not prohibited by any program. I have only installed the primary scanner (file shield). I suspect it's an WFC or windows firewall issue

Hi xubuntu,

Welcome to the forums.

Could be an issue with the taskbar icon settings.  See attached below and restart.  I'd do all work in an administrative account.

If no go, then consider an avast repair of the program.

What W10 OS 32-bit or 64-bit?
What version of avast?  Latest version is 12.3.2280, using avast Internet Security here.

Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed

If Repair doesn't fix the problem, try the following:
Clean Install of Avast:

Any chance you have GPEDIT Software Restriction Policy on and set to default-deny?

Interested as I've had same issue for a few versions of Avast now. I just open gui manually to have it in my task bar to run scans. Logging at the time showed gui opened okay via different path manually, but SRP blocked it auto-loading:

(a) AvastUI.exe blocked on user log in...

runonce.exe (PID = 3556) identified C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastUI.exe as Disallowed using default rule, Guid = {11015445-d282-4f86-96a2-9e485f593302}

runonce.exe (PID = 3484) identified C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastUI.exe as Disallowed using default rule, Guid = {11015445-d282-4f86-96a2-9e485f593302}

(b) Launching AvastUI.exe from desktop link worked...

svchost.exe (PID = 1076) identified C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastUI.exe as Unrestricted using path rule, Guid = {d2c34ab2-529a-46b2-b293-fc853fce72ea}.

I tried all variations of SRP allow rules and none solved the problem so I gave up. Reached limit of brain cell. Now just launch GUI manually and live without the statistics.

Gui used to auto-launch under SRP default-deny a few years back but can't remember which version of avast. Many moons have passed.

Programs that totally block anything new or changed usually cause more grief than any good they may do.
I use Winpatrol which let's me know when something new wants to run and allows me the option to
accept or reject it's running.
Your computer, your choice. :)

In WinPatrol, the Avast entry within Startup Programs was showing as Disabled.  Trying to Enable it via right click did not change it's status in WinPatrol, so deleted the entry from the list. The GUI seems to be now working correctly again upon boot up after a restart.
In WinPatrol it now shows as 'x64_RUN' rather than Disabled or Enabled. Thanks for the replies :)
