Title: Avast installed istself today when Windows started with no permission!
Post by: REDACTED on September 17, 2016, 03:34:05 AM
Today, I started Windows in my father's PC and saw with Task Manager there was the Avast installer working, installing itself with no permission.

He had Avast until months ago, but recently he changed his AV for another one, just to give it a try. Of course, he uninstalled Avast before installing the other AV. But now, Avast just appeared there and installed itself like nothing happened. His new AV alerted me that avastnm.exe installed things in Windows. There were 3 tasks, the main was located in C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Local\Temp\ns2A4A722A\4902DA8E_stp, named avast_free_antivirus_setup_online__5_.exe. The other ones were located in C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Local\Temp\_av_iup.tm~a06760 and C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Local\Temp\_av_iup.tm~a06760\New_c0308e8.

My father didn't touch anything, nor I.

Now, Avast is there, in "pasive mode".

Do you have any other AV on this system? Sometimes it's not possible to uninstall Avast the standard way:https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility)

Then install avast! from here:https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=189836.0 (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=189836.0) :)

Yup, I have another one. I uninstalled Avast months ago to try the AV I have now. That's why this is strange, Avast was uninstalled untill hours ago. I'm not really interested in installing Avast right now in my father's Windows. I had it there, it worked fine, but now I'm testing how the new AV works. No offense to Avast, I have it in my phone anyway.

So, ok. I executed Avast Clear in Safe Mode and received this message: The stub cannot run installer/updater executable 'C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Local\Temp\_av_iup.tm~a03052\instup.exe' (code 0x3). What now?  :(

EDIT
Ok, I tryed again and it worked, yay!! Thanks!! ;D How do I know it will not install itself again? Last time it looked unistalled :-\

1]
avast never installs itself.
It is always the user that has to start the install.

2]
If something from avast is (still) running after you removed it, you haven't removed it (completely).

3]
The only way to remove avast (and many other applications) is to do it manually.
Removing through the control panel and/or running the removal tool from the developers isn't removing everything.

After removing Avast with it's removal tool, there isn't anything left to trigger any install of any part of Avast.
There may be remnants but nothing that would trigger an update or emergency update, etc.
I'm sure that this case was triggered by an emergency update on a system were the product wasn't removed using the Avast Uninstall Utility (https://www.avast.com/en-my/faq.php?article=AVKB10).

Last time I did it, from Control Panel, and used CCleaner after. Never touched anything from Avast again. Yet, I opened my father's PC and it was there, 3 tasks executing Avast installation without my hands. No panel saying me "Do yo want to install...", no option, no question. Tasks were there by itselves. So I uninstalled Avast, but somehow it installed itself by that exe in a Temp folder. How can I even know Avast will have an exe in some Temp folder to install itself again in the future? That's not contemplated in Control Panel... I had to delete the folders of that installer manually. I checked all browsers to see if there were still a part of Avast in them. I uninstalled Avast and now Avast browser was still there, so I deleted it manually. It's such a bother to uninstall any program this way...

I hope so...

Use this(Temp File Cleaner) tool to remove temp files. Before run this tool you have to finished all your work on pc and then run it as Administrator.During the process do not open anything on pc.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tfc/ (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tfc/)

If you believe so, learn to live with it or don't use Windows (applications).
It has been that way for over 20 years and it will very likely not change in the next 20+ years.

Yes, also with Windows' Disk Cleanup, though not so frequently. Maybe once a week...

Thanks!! I'll try it :)

LOL Did you read I said "this way"? I'm talking about Avast, not about Windows. It's an AV, it should be better than installing/uninstalling things from Softonic with all the intrusive addons in browsers if you don't pay attention during installation...
