Title: Avast installed whilst Bitdefender was still installed and running

I accidentally installed Avast whilst Bitdefender was still installed and running.  Surely this should not be possible?

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.
It is ofcourse a really bad idea to have two av's installed at the same time.

OS X has no method to prevent two AV Scanners from running at the same time. To my knowledge the Avast installer doesn't check for other AV clients.

As Eddie said, choose only one to run as the on-access scanners can conflict.
