Title: After Changing to ADSL Connection
Post by: metaxa on February 18, 2006, 06:38:36 PM
After getting myself an ADSL connection, I have two questions regarding avast Home:

1. The little window announcing new updates doesn't occur any more - why?

2. I've read in these forums that the Zone Alarm Free firewall works well with avast. But my Win98 seems to be a problem as the Zone company emphasizes that Win98me/SE is the oldest edition that they support. Is my Win too old or have I misunderstood their message?

Welcome to the forums, metaxa!    :)

For the updates problem, try this:

Right click the "a" ball on task bar > click on Program Settings... > click on Update[Connections] in left pane > checkmark second option and not first option > click OK.

As far as ZA Free is concerned, I think you are misunderstanding their message. My old computer, which I still use, is running W98SE and the ZA Free firewall without a problem. So, your computer should also be OK with this.    :)

I hope this helps you.

1. Have you checked that updates are indeed being done ?
- Check about avast latest 4.6.763 and VPS version 0607-2
- Check the Program Settings, Update (Connections) that the connection type matches your connection type.

2. So long as the magic words 'the Zone company emphasizes that Win98me/SE is the oldest edition that they support.' are correct then if you only have win98 not 98SE it may not work for you.

However, a google search http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Zone+Alarm+with+windows+98 has many hits, and win98 would appear to be OK.

Another consideration is that ZA guarantees protection only while Microsoft supports your operating system.  Since Microsoft plans to end support for Windows 98/SE/ME on July 11, 2006 ZA support will theoretically end then too.

Although I expect ZA will continue to work on older operating systems for some time after that date its functionality may diminish or end without much warning.

Hi. Thanks to you all for your kind help. avast Update is in perfect order now. And as to Zone Alarm Free vs Win98, I feel encouraged to give it a try. Best regards, metaxa
