Title: Beta 17.1.2282
Post by: MartinZ on January 02, 2017, 03:01:07 PM
Hi all,
Happy New Year 2017 to all of you. We decided to celebrate the new year with new beta version ;-)
It contains many fixes we did during the last few weeks. Please note that the behavior analysis (aka IDP) is not included yet, but still planned for January release. It will be included in the next beta version planned in 2-3 weeks.

Newest beta version: 17.1.2282

Changes:
+ GUI fixes
+  New SecureDNS module
+ New tray icon
+ SafeZone: Now, whether you’re in Default or Bank Mode, you’ll use the same settings, bookmarks and history. You’ll even be able to switch between modes without losing your session, so it’s never been easier to shop or bank safely.
+ SafeZone: Added Bookmarks export
+ minor bugs fixed (total 268)

Download links:

Known issues:
+ SmartScan and Browser Cleanup not finished
+ Firewall profiles don't work correctly on Windows XP
+ SafeZone: Links leading to extensions store will not work

Your Avast team

I am very pleased to see this. What's new in the SecureDNS module? Anything on anti-exploit and anti-ransomware modules?

Happy New Year for all.

It will be nice to see some screenshots of the new beta, please!

Thank you!!!

Check in the previous beta 12.3.2281 topic as that had some screenshots - https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=192643.0 (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=192643.0) - but not a huge amount.

I was hoping to see some improvements in the GUI in this new beta ...

Installed this beta and lost all icons on PC.  Not just on Desktop but everywhere.  Removed beta and went back to 2280 and icons still gone.  Any recommendations appreciated.

Did you use the uninstall utility?

Just follow the instructions...https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Used the uninstall utility and no change.  Rebooted twice.  Tried system restore and said it was successful but still no icons.  Have all the text below the icons but not the icon itself.  This is on the Desktop and any other thing I look at such as Program Files Downloads, documents etc.  Text but no picture.

Problem solved.  Found that an iconcache.db file had been deleted from my PC.  Restored it and all is well.  Not sure if the Avast install did it or had anything at all to do with it but it happened at same point in time.  In any event solved.

Is it some random thing?  Both my PC and now laptop do not shut down completely with newest beta installed?

I have also noticed that my laptop will not sleep when the lid is closed, no matter what Windows 10 settings I try.

I found these pictures on the internet.

I know what the really important thing is what Avast has "inside", but I still think that it has to look professional and visually attractive in the "outside". This GUI is really awful, it makes Avast to look like an unprofessonal, second-class software. On the contrary, the new AVG GUI looks excellent and professional. I really don't understand why is this happening...

Hi there,

could anyone experiencing shutdown/wake-up bug turn on debug logging (settings - maintanace), replicate the problem and send us support package file + it's ID(e.g. https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB33) or zipped logs (C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\logs + C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Persistent Data\Avast\Logs)? This would speed up locating the problem and solving it.

Thanks for the feedback,
B.

I will try to replicate today. Seems like it was the first shutdown (I noticed it with both PC and laptop, both running W8.1 x64). However, I am not 100% sure it's because of Avast. Will try to replicate and send required files.

Updated over previous beta using in-product updater. So far so good, except some cosmetic issues.

1.
Japanese Mojibake are fixed, which is a good thing, however the Japanese fonts in the UI seems inconsistent now.
As the attached image says, Kanji (Chinese character) uses Ming style (similar to Serif) while Hiragana uses Gothic style (similar to Sans-serif).
And, the design of Kanji seems to be a Chinese one, not Japanese one. Might be font-link related.
We Japanese really feel strange about these non-familiar and inconsistent character design.

2.
Window is too big, especially each settings window.
It does not fit even with 768 height.

3.
HIPS settings seems to be gone. Must be related to IDP integrating.

Okay, so then when the final release comes out, I can turn that OFF .. I do my own checking for when software needs to be updated. And some programs I never update, but Flash, Shockwave and Java do get checked every couple of weeks or so.

Looks like a FP.

I would agree with that, not to mention I wouldn't recommend the use of HitMan Pro.

Not to mention 5 of the hits on the VT image are all bitdefender signatures and all 7 of 56 are heuristic detections.

I can't shut down my PC (Win 10 Home Version 1607 OS-version 14393.576) after installing the latest beta (17.1.2282 Build 17.1.3336.0) of Avast Internet Security. I have submited a ticket and a package file. When I try to shut down my PC, it's just restarts.

Installed on a test machine with win8.Seems to run fine. The installer was lot slower than usual not sure if this is intended behaviour but nevertheless its working fine just the issue with the shutdown windows seems to be having a gripe with avast on shutdown not shutting down properly.

Just a thought, but Windows 10 is somewhat picky about program access levels. Try setting Avast to "run as administrator" and see if that fixes the problem.

I would have thought that AvastSvc.exe (avast service) is running at a higher level (System) and that is the file that controls the various scanning engines.

Yes, you would think so. But sometimes in Windows 10 you must explicitly tell a specific program to run as administrator.
I run SpybotSD like that or it won't always do full immunization in Win 10 ... I also had Adobe Photoshop CS2 and it wanted to register, but the registration would not take, unless it was done when the program was run as administrator.

My last install of Avast was with admin rights and I have no shut down problems.
The last time it was installed I didn't use the right click option and installed just by clicking on the setup file.
Wonder now if the clean install of Windows 10 was really needed. ???

I wonder if tech in avast! will remain and in what order proactive technologies will be applied.

Signatures -> DeepScreen -> Software Analyzer -> if still nothing detected and file unknown to avast! -> CyberCapture

I assume the most efficient method would be for proactive features to help generate signatures...

Signatures -> DeepScreen -> Software Analyzer

If any of the local technologies detects malware proactively, I assume data will be sent back to avast! Virus Lab in order to generate a fixed signature for the proactive detection to further expand Evo-Gen detections (and all the trickery they are doing in the cloud). How is with this? Am I predicting the order correctly?

Post by: TrueIndian on January 10, 2017, 05:40:30 AM
I wonder how much of the meta data obtained from the deepscreen and other technologies are actually utilized to improve intel as avast! seems to have improved. For example some varients of ransom malware are being picked up now while other av's are failing.

Cryptomix:

And this new cerber one is also on our radar:

I am not sure if its just me who is seeing this.

Post by: av20 on January 13, 2017, 01:27:53 AM
First impression is good.  Here's some thoughts:

1.  I had an uninstall bug in 12.3.3154 that left behind a hidden directory, which was a bugger to remove -- Had to boot to DOS and use DELTREE (ticket submitted with details).  I've tried an install and uninstall of this beta, and it works fine.   :)

2.  The GUI seems to big and can't be re-sized in typical Windows fashion.

3.  Colors aren't much of a concern to me, but maybe it would look more business like without the purple accents, just stick with Orange?

4.  The notification "bell" in the upper right corner stays red even after dismissing the notifications, but it went away after a reboot.

4.  After a Smart Scan the GUI shows the performance issues details with a sideways wipe.  The horizontal arrow in the upper right corner is confusing -- Suggest using the traditional [X] to close.

5.  The separate window for settings seems a bit awkward.  By opening "subscription information" from the tray icon, then opening the main Avast interface, then clicking on settings in the lower left -- I had 3 windows open and could not go to the main GUI without closing the last settings window, but could get to the first settings window opened via the tray icon.  This is not a big deal, but it seems like it would be better with a single window with tabs/menus of "status", "protection", "performance", "settings" across the top.

6.  Clicking on the ? of the main GUI brings up the help window, but the help window's menu disappears before one can click on any of the choices.

No crashes or weird behavior noticed, but I'll keep trying...

I suggest you try a repair. If that doesn't work, do a clean install.

Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed
https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB204
If Repair doesn't fix the problem, try the following:
Clean Install of Avast:

No problems here with selecting the items in the help menu. :)

In my humble, ignorant opinion; this new release of Avast is far away from being ready. It would be better if it takes a little longer to the final release, to make sure that all the bugs are fixed and the GUI is optimal. I think we, Avast users, will be very grateful.

Hope nobody gets offended.

It would be better if you attached the images to your post. That way people can view it in line without having to jump to another site.
I thought that the images were too big and would make the forum cluttered. I'll do it the next time.  ;)

1. Not at all, one needs to click them to get opened/enlarged.
2. Please do so, like Dave, I avoid opening external links.

By the way the error (the one with the SecureDNS) is again here.  :D  Anyone else who has it?

Blocked threats by real time protection show up in the notifications, haven't checked yet if they stay there after a restart, but maybe it is a good idea to have a log also for real time protection. Or better just create a log for everything like all the other AVs have.

Next to the "Threat blocked" notification in the notifications panel there is a button "Open in Virus Chest" even for threats blocked by the web shield. Since the stream scanning doesn't allow creating a real .exe file to be quarantined, users can become concerned why there is nothing in the Chest.

I'm more concerned over the GUI design. They've made some really weird design decisions and very little time to address them properly... I hope they'll still manage to do it, but my expectations are rather low and that's worrying...

Hi Rejzor,

yes we plan to release some changes in the UI in next beta but the basic selection of the menu will stay for now and we will A/B test different approaches later on. Your proposal makes sense if we would have just AV functionality, which we don't have a we must somehow organize the items. So that's why it's divided to Protection, Privacy, Performance. Adding a section of Tools would mean that this category would be much larger that the rest menu items and all new features would end up there. We tested the current layout on normal users and it wasn't really an issue.

Hi All,
Of course I'm running this beta version..I've run several scan's already. I have a question, on the status page there  are two notification's I can't seem to get rid of..(1) There are a couple things to fix - Fix All (2) Real Site can't run on this network - Repair . Is anyone else receiving these same notification's ? I'm enclosing a screenshot of what I'm seeing.
Thanks,
David  :o

I've posted a new GUI draft in the GUI discussion thread. Ask Vlk about it, I've sent him the link as well.

With my hacker - and your Photoshop skills, we could try to change it inside next week ;)

Hi, this warning will be removed. It doesn't make sense.

Hi MartinZ,
Thanks so much for your reply..it didn't make sense to me either, of course things like that happen when using 'beta' software.

Hi RejZoR,
Just to let you know, now I'm getting the same notification on a different windows 10 computer. It doesn't seem to be affecting the performance of the software though.
Thanks,
David

A rushed beta will have the same adverse affect on you system as a final release.

Well, deadline is closing in either way, so, nothing will change either way if things go wrong now or later. I just prefer to have it sooner so if we find anything important, they can still fix it last minute.

Okay so i'll post now but i guess that you won't respond. I start to ask myself if there is some good at posting such things or i'm just wasting my time.

I've turned all shields for 10 minutes off from the right-click of the tray, then opened the interface and clicked the "FiX ALL" button, it changed from a red "X" to the yellow sign and showed "dashboard.some_shields_off.action" and the FIX ALL button disappeared. The web shield was showing as off in the settings, so i turned it on and clicked OK. Now it is showing as ON in the settings and off in the main GUI. I tested it with EICAR and it is actually off, the file was blocked by the file shield after download, not during the download by the web shield. Now what i'm waiting for is for someone to come and say: "Open control panel and repair because the avast team doesn't care".

Hi All,
I agree about releasing a new beta too soon, I'd rather wait and give the software developer's a chance to work out as may 'bugs' as possible.
