Title: Windows XP Home hangs up
Post by: Dadioles on February 23, 2006, 01:39:13 PM
I am sorry that the info is so vague.
I have a laptop with Windows XP Home SP2 all updates.
Firewall disabled and no other anti virus (or similar) software loaded.
If I instal Avast and re-boot, Windows appears to start normally and the initial Avast (new instal) window pops up, click ok, window closes and then a few seconds later Windows hangs up.  The cursor still moves around but turns into an hour glass when pointed at the start menu.
I cannot run any programs.
It is though a background task is waiting to complete.
After several minutes no change.
Ctrl Alt Del does not work.
The only thing to do is power off the computer.
Re-starting in safe mode is a bit hit and miss, several times it will hang up as the startup items scroll past and safe mode will not start.
Eventually after several tries I was able to start in safe mode and uninstall Avast.
The laptop now works entirely normally.
Foolishly I then tried re-installing Avast and had excatly the same symptoms.  It took many attempts to re-start before I could get into safe mode and uninstal the software once more.
The laptop is again (without Avast) working normally.
I have used Avast on several other computers without a problem so wonder if it is an issue with this latest version of the software and / or a clash with something else installed on the laptop.
I shall try Norton Antivirus 2006 on the laptop instead, although the Norton software should now be called "bloatware"!
Best wishes to all
Les

Which firewall?
Which antivirus did you use in the past?
Is there any error message?
Into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, is there any significant info?

I won't kill your laptop  ;D
Did you use NAV in this laptop before?

Many thanks for the very fast response.  It reminds me why I use Avast!
The firewall is hardaware router based (Netgear) so not an issue and Windows firewall is disabled.
There were not any error messages.

The problem was a previous instal of Norton Antivirus 2005 which was supplied pre-installed as a three month subscription with the laptop.

I had removed all Norton (Symantec) products using uninstal in safe mode but as is common knowledge (except that I forgot!) the uninstal is quite dirty and leaves bits and pieces behind.

Following your tip and advice elsewhere in this forum (thank you) I downloaded the three Norton uninstaller files and did a complete and thorough uninstal of that software.

Re-installing Avast went without a hitch, no hangups.

The only problem that now appeared related to HP software as a file digitimg.msi (I think that was the name) popped up in conjunction with windows installer.  The message was something like... digit.msi was needed, insert cd. The window would not go away, closing it just ran a second window which re-triggered the first etc. round and round in circles.  Why this should come up as the apparent result of running the NAV uninstall software and installing Avast I have no idea.  Eventually I found the required cd and re-installed the missing .msi file

Now all is working well and Avast is doing its job.

Happy outcome, I am very grateful.

Thanks for letting us know the resolution to your problem. NAV does get embedded very deeply into the system but I doubt that that caused the problem unless digit.msi was deleted by it.

Glad your problem is now solved, welcome to the forums.

This Google search says that digitimg.msi/digit.msi are files used by printers and image scanners (not av scanners). The msi = medium scale intergration.

http://www.google.com/search?q=digit.msi&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1

Anyway, glad you got it sorted out and now all ok, Dadioles! Welcome to the forums!    :)
