Title: Avast 17.1.2286 messing with VirtualBox machines
Post by: wrooot on February 09, 2017, 08:25:38 PM
When Avast 17 is installed (i have only File Shield selected) my virtual machines in VirtualBox start to behave weirdly, i can't launch apps in them (apps crashing). When i remove Avast, it is back to normal. Disabling Avast doesn't help. Excluding VirtualBox doesn't help. Only uninstalling it. Can't believe this is happening. Every new version of Avast creates problems. Instead of using my PC i have to deal with that, reinstall programs, post in the forums. Going back to 12 version and will use it until it is supported. Then, done with Avast..

Same experience here. New Avast version is impacting both virtual machines severely.
System is Windows 8.1 pro 64 bit on an Intel core i7 DELL Laptop with 8GB.
VM 1 is Vmware Workstation Player 12.5.2 build-4638234 - after Avast update slowed down to nearly "null" - useless
VM 2 is Oracle Virtual Box Version 5.1.14 r112924 (Qt5.6.2) - slowed down significantly, but still somehow useable.

Go to "Settings" - "Troubleshooting" - remove checkmark at "Enable hardware-assisted virtualization" - reboot PC
This fixed it for me.
Seems that Avast has re-introduced a bug which was already there in previous versions.

Hi,
we have this same issue with dozens of notebooks with Avast Business. I am in touch with the support with no success for now.
Even if I try to uncheck the flag "Enable hardware-assisted virtualization", after a while the Avast client synchronizes itself with the cloud system, and then it resets the flag!
I don't see any option for the flag "Enable hardware-assisted virtualization" inside the cloud console  >:(.
Can anyone help me to disable it from the cloud console?

So, 9 months since. Tried again with the newest version. Still the same issue. When HW assisted virtualization is disabled, it behaves correctly. Of course, it warns, that it won't be able to sandbox malware. Oh well, i am probably in the same position still using 12 version, so..

That's the current suggestion offered by Avast. They are aware of the problem and are working on a fix.

Still no fix to this problem? I just found out by accident, and after a lot of experimentation, that Avast has been causing it all this time. The headaches and Windows re-installs I had to go through because I didn't know it was Avast causing the problem. It would really have been helpful to get a notification during installation that Avast will affect VM performance. Please until you fix it at least add a notification to the installer and make it check for VM software so that people won't waste their time like I did not knowing the source of the VM performance issue. Thanks.
