Title: Installing Avast AV Pro in the VirtualBox guest WindowsXP crashes

Hello,
This is my system and current situation:

The Host System  Kubuntu 16.04.1 Xenial unning on Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6750  @ 2.66GHz, 8Gb RAM and Oracle VirtualBox Version 5.1.14 r112924 (Qt5.5.1)

Virtual Guest System: Windows XP Professional (SP3) with the latest VBOXGuestAdditions.iso, 3Gb RAM, and 60Gb HD  (VDI)
with MS Office 2003 and 2007 installed,   I run sucessfully latest Avast Antivirus Pro on other Windows systems: WinXP Professional amd Win7 Professional w/ot Oracle VirtualBox.  I also run successfully Avast Antivirus Pro on Win7 guest VirtualBox.

However when I install Avast on the WinXP guest, after installation both guest and the host OS crash and the only way out is to reboot the host system.  The VirtualBox Guru Meditation dialogue is displayed before crash with following text:
A critical error has occured while running the virtual machine and the machine execution has been stopped.
...
Pres PK if you want to power off the machine or press Ignore if you want to leave it as is for debugging.
...
OK  Ignore

No matter of I press the system crashes immediately.  The only way out is to reboot host and when starting WinXP guest is to press F8 key, start WinXP in save mode and remove Avast.

Please find attached the guest system log file.

Did anybody experience similar situation?  Do you have any suggestions how to remedy my pain?

This problem still exists 3 years later.  I am using VB 3.2.36, which is the last 32-bit version, in 32-bit W10 and XP3 as a VM.  W10 is fully updated and clean scanned.  The VM has 1GB RAM allocated  XP is updated with so-called "SP4" which I got from CNET  Avast File Version is 2.1.1286.0  A crash as described by the OP occurs at the very end of the install process as judged by observing the progress bar.

Sounds like insufficient RAM. I don't think 1 gig is enough.
That's just a guess on my part.

Community guidelines for Windows XP installs recommend 512MB of RAM. XP was predominatly a pre-64bit OS, therefore can't utilize high RAM counts (max 4GB). 1GB seems perfectly reasonable to me given it's age.

I've only ever seen more then 1 GB of RAM in an XP system once before, and it wasn't XP. It was a physical Windows 2003 R2 box running a 64bit version. It had 4GB of RAM.
