Title: Support for Firefox on Windows XP ending
Post by: REDACTED on March 18, 2017, 06:15:59 PM
Not posted here for a while but I've just discovered that Firefox is ending support for XP in September this year. I'm on the ESR version now up until that point but just wondered what the general feeling would be of me trying my luck with using it beyond that point? I really can't afford to go out and get an entirely new PC and then my printer would also need to be changed I imagine and I'll lose access to some office products etc. It's just such an upheaval!

I haven't had any real issues with using my XP computer online. I haven't been hacked or whatever as far as I know since 2006 when I started being a bit more savvy online ie not visiting dodgy looking sites or downloading/installing anything that looked dodgy.

Thoughts appreciated. Thank you folks  :)

Just about everybody is ending support for XP.
I use Vivaldi and I know it won't work on XP.
I did a Google search "browsers for xp" and found these two. Hope that will help.

I will continue to use Firefox ESR version on XP until I no longer can. There will be a point where you can no longer get updates for the ESR version or not be able to update add-ons. Security based add-ons would continue to provide a little extra security to the ESR version.

All things come to an end, but before that start considering your options, are there any browsers still supporting XP, etc.

But before all of this, start thinking about a robust backup and recovery strategy. You really should be doing this already, to recover from any computer issue, be that a crash or malware attack.

Hard disk imaging software is such a strategy to make it easy to set your system back to what it was before you experience a problem you can't live with.

I run a hard drive drive image weekly and keep copies of the last 6 drive images. The worst case scenario being I lose the last 6 days of changes. But some of the software allows for incremental updates so only new entries or modified elements which could be run daily. In this case you could be down to only losing changes within the last day.

Hi Emma, nothing to worry about (for now) with FF ESR.
I'd suggest to ask back here in September... ;)

So just got reminded of Firefox support for XP ending on apparently Aug 18 2018
So how long after will the ESR version be safe? ???

This link doesn't really give any definitive alternative after end of Firefox support, basically is saying upgrade OS. Go figure. ;D

Hi, hard to tell (depends on new exploits, etc.), but certainly longer than other browsers that dropped support long ago.

For those still using XP IE was frozen in time at version 8 and that had nothing like the add-on support.

Thank guys. :)
Using my xp at this point is more of a novelty rather then a 'need to'.
Although some of my (Old)office equipment (drivers etc.) is loaded on xp and won't work with Windows 10

Thanks Bob
I've tried but ended up buying new Office stuff (Higher tech, more capability) for less then the old equipment cost 18 years ago. It has already paid for itself.
I mean a new 'All in One' Printer, high functioning is less then my HP Office Jet K80 was. ;)
