Title: Windows 7 automatic updates keep getting disabled
Post by: henkkaart on March 22, 2017, 12:43:20 PM
Hello!

I have Windows 7 Professional desktop PC and recently the automatic updates option started getting disabled on its own. I have subscription to Avast Premier. At first I thought it was due to Ghost Recon: Wildlands (I bought and started playing it at the same time this started happening and for the first time noticed it after quitting the game to desktop). I noticed that the latest Avast updates have brought new features to the service and it now informs me about games etc. being added to a list of some kind (I assume a list of "programs that are A-Okay!"). There are other similar new features I have come across during my day-to-day use.

At first I thought that Wildlands was what caused the automatic updates to become disabled since it always turned off during the game and/or after quitting it. However, today I saw that the updates were turned off after I briefly ran another game. So, I have deduced that it is not any one game that causes it to happen but it has something to do with Avast. I think I'm correct in my guesswork but I'd like to hear if anyone else have had the same problem and whether or not there is a solution to it. It's no big deal to enable the updates again but it's just that it should be this way in the first place.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried rebooting your system after you've played a game to see if the updates are still turned off ???
While playing your game, many things are changed to enhance your game playing but, they should return once you've finished playing the game.

It's been a while and after some searching, trial and error I figured what caused the Windows 7 automatic updates to disable. It indeed has to do with Avast Antivirus and more specifically the "Game mode" function (Settings -> Components -> Game mode). I turned it off a few days ago and never after that has the automatic updates been disabled while running a game. I guess it has to do with Avast, Game mode ON, trying to block Windows updates happening during gameplay (the ones where the countdown begins and the computer restarts itself unless you postpone it manually). Disabling it, everything has been working as before the most recent big update. I guess the feature is pretty cool in itself but I'd like it to actually switch the automatic updates back ON after the game is exited. Otherwise, it's a bit of unneeded feature if it doesn't work properly.

Yeah, I've got the latest, March 30th ver. 17.3.2291 (build 17.3.3443.0).

Just stopped playing Ghost Recon: Wildlands and now that the Game Mode is disabled, the updates for Windows aren't disabled like they were when the Game Mode was enabled. I guess it has something to do with the "silences updates from Windows" part that disable the automatic updates but for some reason doesn't enable them back after the game has been closed.
