Title: Windows 10 v1703 Questions and Answers
Post by: bob3160 on April 18, 2017, 04:04:31 PM
I used to see a little picture or icon of my images.
In the latest version of Windows v 1703 I see the following:

Any one know how to fix this ???
Before the question is asked, here's my setting which has not changed since the last version of Windows:

Doesn't unticking, "always show icon, never thumbnails" fix the problem? I just got done doing this for someone else and it worked as expected. And, if you hit Restore Defaults, what you are showing is not the default setting.

Mystery solved. I should have read more carefully. :)
I would then have realized that it was the upgrade that changed the setting.
All Good now thanks. :)

We'll keep this thread for more questions stupid or otherwise. :)

Then I have a question. How do you get the Control Panel shortcut back on the Start Menu context menu? It used to be in the area of the red arrow. Please see attached.

I have pinned it to the Start Menu for easy access. I don't understand why MS decided to remove it.

That is not the start menu, but the quick link menu.

You can use the details provided here to add control panel back to the menu, scroll down to "Customize Quick Access Menu in Windows 8" http://www.askvg.com/exclusive-customize-new-quick-access-menu-win-x-menu-in-windows-8-add-remove-rename-or-move-shortcuts-and-much-more/

Also called the Win X Menu since the shortcut to reach it is the Windows key and the X key.
To answer Charyb's question I've found this to be the easy way:
I used this tool:

<snip>

I had been having this conundrum when trying out the windows snipping tool and Greenshot - having seen that option it isn't exactly clear - I always set image folders to show thumbnails, but could find no reference to thumbnails and as far as I was aware I wanted thumbnails not pictures.

And that darn window 10 ribbon affair is a pain in the backside, trying to find the old dead easy to find the Folder Options didn't make it any easier. Why the hell that option isn't in plain sight in the ribbon is beyond me.

So this option exactly clear, these 'pictures' that are displayed look just like 'thumbnails' in my other systems. Looks like thumbnails as a word/description has gone out of fashion.

Getting to the File Explorer Options isn't hard:
Click on start > Type "file explorer options " and select the search result.
There are a dozen other ways. :)

Yes, I did find that, but all of those 'other' options for layout in the Ribbon, why not have it there in what I would consider the logical place.

Or why not have that option much higher up the chain in the View menu. The old ways aren't necessarily bad, you're in the file explorer and it has a menu, Tools > Folder Options and bang there you are and not a ribbon in sight.

I have a Dell Vostro 1700 which runs like a charm on the last build of Windows 10 v 1607.
As soon as I update that system to Windows 10 v1703, I have no internet. It doesn't recognize my Wifi
I can't even plug in the Ethernet cable. Any one else running into this and has any one found a fix ???

I don't have a Dell but have you gone into device manager/network adapters and made sure both drivers are enabled and updated?

Unless I keep the system on the 1607 build I have no problems.

Bob, Have you tried going to the vendors website for the drivers? Asus don't provide drivers for my system anymore but Intel still provides frequent updates for my Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and Realtek for my Ethernet - Audio and Card Reader, all of the above had new drivers released in the last month for Win10.

No, it does not.
I would suggest that you disable the Avast services before starting the update of Windows 10 v1703.

I haven't had any problems with the win 10 Creators update.  After I read about it via your link Staticguy I'm afraid of what might happen to my computer.  I got a win update for this version today.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, I say.  No real problems here with version 1703 here either.

If you're not getting hard freezes, blue screens, generally molasses operation, leave well enough alone and count your blessings.

@midnight: The link that I provided it says that the problems usually occurs "The problem is that some systems – particularly older ones – may not be able to handle the Creators Update, Microsoft said. The US giant has been focusing on updating newer kit first, since it feels that hardware is less likely to run into difficulties, and has thus stopped offering the latest Windows 10 upgrade to computers it suspects may suffer from breakdowns."

If your computer is particularly old then it might run into issues especially with hardware and also few users were also reporting that their Broadcom bluetooth and their wireless network connections looses internet connection.

There was an update to Windows 10 via windows update few days ago and i updated it so far I didn't get any problems or issue.

My laptop is brand new (couple of weeks old) I haven't had any big issues after updating to the Creators Update. I used the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant. There was only one blue screen before and after updating to Creators Update because of an incompatible/outdated driver of one of the drivers Intel ProSet Wireless Driver. This issue was known to DELL and a DELL Support Agent gained access to my laptop and they installed an updated driver via DELL drivers and support page. Now everything is all well.

Additional problem is that M$'s updates seems in a big mess at the mo.
Good read on this subject: https://www.askwoody.com/2017/what-every-windows-customer-should-know-about-last-weeks-deluge-of-malware/

And again this month there is big need for patches http://www.infoworld.com/article/3192194/microsoft-windows/yes-windows-patches-are-a-mess-but-you-should-still-install-them.html

Time for a real Spring Cleaning in Redmond, folks?

Windows 10 v 1703 and Screencast-O-Matic Pro quirk
If you're running the above OS and program to do your screen captures,
be aware of the following unresolved problem:Saving a screenshot to the computer does not work if you have a 'GodMode' Folder set up on your system.
All other screen saver functions work but, if you want to save the screen shot to your computer, you need to first remove the 'God Mode' folder.
A fix for this quirk is still not available.

If you are going to do this to the Win 10 OS then you might as well go and install Windows 7 as that's essentially what this user/creator has done, on top of several features of the system which have gone backwards in capability, who knows if this person has encrypted their own data collection into the system  :-\

TBH I wouldn't trust this OS as far as you could throw it ::) no Microsoft support either and probably some legality issues will arise from it yet :-\

Sorry but this has no business here. It's NOT Microsoft Windows 10 related.
