Thanks, Bob ... from that link I have finally decided to try OpenOffice since I do not have MSOffice on this new computer. Now, I have only 20 mins to wait for it to finish downloading using DSL.    ::)    ;)

Lets us know what you think of the latest OpenOffice 2.0, I have MS Office 97 (still, cheap skate) and there is no way I'm paying over £200 for the latest or new version 12 of MS Office, plus have the joy of Product Activation, etc. no thanks.

I will be trying to find OO on a cover CD though, no way I'm downloading that on dial-up.

Yeah, dial-up download would take probably more than 2 hours. I'll play with it a few days and then post what I think. I have opened the parts of it and it all looks very well done.    :D

I have MSOffice 97 on my old computer but quit using it about the time I retired 4 years ago. I'll have to also play with that to do a comparison. Everything OpenOffice is suppose to be compatable with MSOffice. We will see.    :)

Hi CharleyO,

Agree with you there, but always use a secure download scenario, that is download your freeware from a reliable source (pre-scan with DrWeb's hyperlink scanner or use the info on siteadvisor), after pre-scanning scan the zipfile with Avast before unzipping. After unzipping scan again. If in doubt check with FileAlyzer or check the downloaded files at fileadvisor for hashes (check-sums), and to see if what you have got is like the programmer designed it or meant it to be. An ounce of precaution is better than three pounds of cure. Also use these precautions for programs on bundled magazine CD's with freeware. Better safe than sorry, folks.

Hi David, since you live in the UK, it must be easy for you to obtain a set of free Ubuntu-cd's.
You can order them for free at https://shipit.ubuntu.com/  and they will be delivered by postal mail.
With the live-cd you can install the latest OpenOffice.org  version in english language.
Just insert the live-cd while running windows and you have OO on your disk in a few minutes.
Bye,
Fast

Here is a free OpenOffice tutorial. I have used OO to do wedding programs and similar projects with excellent results.

Thanks for that link, Gene!    :)
Much better than what is at OO itself.

In fact, I can't get one of their "OO" (not PDF) tutorials I downloaded to even show anything. Maybe I got a bad download or am not doing something correctly.    ???

Thank you all for this page. Very Useful information.

Thank you Gene! Your link is just what I need as I have just started using OpenOffice 2 on the laptop and will probably have to refer to your link several times in the near future.

What a team avast! users make!

Happy Days to you all

I have compiled a much better list of Media Related Freeware here:

XP Media - A Windows XP Media Guide (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/XPMedia.html)

I highly recommend OpenOffice. I have been using it for over three years without incident.

Don't know about the "much better" part of that statement.
It's a more comprehensive list but still omits quite a few excellent media related programs which
I've reviewed and mentioned in my HighlyRecommended (http://bob3160.googlepages.com/highlyrecommended) series.  ;D

I have to admit that at this point, my website isn't as well organized as yours. :)

Yes, very good.
Snapfiles.com and Softpedia.com are trustworthy sites to download freeware from.
Everything is tested first before it gets on their sites.

some people consider adware, spyware, or other unwanted programs.

Well, after playing with OpenOffice for about a week, I say OpenOffice is easier to use than Office97 and has a few more features. I can not judge OO by anything else as Office97 is the only MS version of this type of software I have ... well, I have no other versions of this type of software other than these two.

David, if you can find OpenOffice on a cd, I say get it. I think you will like it better than Office97.    :)

Check out this link for a cd ......

Be sure to scroll far down to the United Kingdom section.    ;)

Just got this in zdnet news about OpenOffice and MS Office. I thought it might "throw a little more light" on the comparison in more mordern terms than Office97.

PS - if you use an ad blocker, you may want to turn it off or you may have trouble reading this page. Of course, that may depend on the settings in your ad blocker.    ;)

Currently it doesn't throw any more light on comparison as the author is asking for assistance in this task. However, they do put forward a few reasons why to choose OpenOffice.

MS Office has almost by default become the Industry Standard and in the days were you couldn't view or edit different document formats anyone who had to read .doc files could only do it with Word or had to send documents to business. Not the case any longer and with the move towards XML document format for standardisation there may well be some other small footprint solutions out there.

No problems with the Ads, I think. My firewall blocks ads as does firefox, so not many get through that lot, but the page appeared to display fine.
