Title: How do I fully remove Avast? There's a popup after uninstall
Post by: REDACTED on June 01, 2017, 07:49:02 PM
So I uninstalled Avast via control panel.  It's not showing up in there anymore, but after a bit, this popup appears at the bottom right corner of my screen.  Is the popup intentional?  Why is something Avast still in my computer after I've uninstalled it?  How can I remove it?

Delete all folders, files and registry entries from avast.

Is there any way to identify which files, folders, and registry entries came from avast?

Start with removing all folders and their content that have avast in the name.
Next search for files that have avast in their name.
Open the registry tool and remove everything (that is possible) with avast in the name.

(I know no one will like me for this, but Iobit Uninstaller is a great tool.)

Stop with promoting IObit.
We do not want people to use things from thieves that also give a lot of misleading and wrong information about their tools.

@  JC20032017
There are plenty of other uninstall tools to do the task (if required) and I would use one these in preference to any IOBit software.

You seem to have a thing for IOBit, starting polls about it then this post

I'm sorry, I'll let it go.  And on topic, what other uninstallers are there?
Thought I might pick up some information.

The best uninstaller/software remover is called the human brain.
If people don't even know how to remove software, they should not use a computer at all as it is one of the basic thing someone should know.

Very clearly you don't or you would not be using IObit crap.

As I said there are many and a google search would give many. CCleaner also has au uninstall function, but I rather doubt it is comprehensive, then there is Revo Uninstaller, which is more comprehensive.

If you know how to uninstall why the interest in uninstall programs and one in particular.

What we don't want to do is hijack the OPs topic.

A little bit harsh, Eddy.
As principle ok, but we have millions of users who know nearly nothing about the basics, and you cannot exclude them all  :)

Revo Uninstaller (https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html) is a widely acceptable tool to remove programs and their hidden files, folders and reg. entries.
It's certainly safer than having novices dig into the registry etc. :)

I've searched avast on Windows 10 and deleted everything that had avast in its name.  I still get the pop up.  The installation doesn't really tell you what exactly it changes, so there's no leads :(

Hi  Em16,

Your pop-up attached in your original post does not look like any pop-up I've ever seen coming from Avast.  And I've been a user for a number of years.

Are you still getting the same pop-up now?  After removal of everything you could find re Avast?

Could be it is one of those browser hijack tools designed to get the user to call a support number for (a support scam?) and since you've cropped the original image from what it was to something smaller, I've got to think you just focused on the Avast message and not the entire message.

If you are still getting the pop-up now and it is larger than what you originally posted please attach the new whole thing so we can help you determine what it is.  From there we may be able to track it down and get rid of it.

Hi mchain,

Thanks for your help.  Yes, I am still getting the popup, after searching 'avast' in all of my drives, and deleting any folders and files that had it in the name.  As far as registry goes, I've only found something mentioning aswrdr and deleted that.

I'm wary of such tools, so I'm not particularly keen on pressing the popup or doing anything with it.  Here's a pic that will hopefully give an idea about how this popup looks like on my screen.

Thanks again

So, if the pop-up is not from Avast, it has to be coming from somewhere, as Asyn and I say.

I suggest a certified malware expert to intercede on your behalf (at no cost to you) and recommend the following action be taken:

In all cases, something is wrong with your system and you are seeing things you should not.  Help is coming if you wish.

This is certainly the first instance that I have seen of this in the avast forums, so that in itself is rare (being the first to report something).

Whilst there is a possibility it could be suspicious.
I'm just wondering if this isn't something in Windows. If you uninstall a 3rd party AV then then Windows Defender takes over, would it subsequently suggest another AV. But I haven't seen any example of this in the forums.

It may well be worth a query in the slack channel for someone using it.
