Title: I got a question
Post by: NskylineGTR on April 09, 2006, 08:02:02 PM
When Avast scans and picks up a virus it will ask you what to do such as send to chest, delete etc. When it does this the scan is paused. Well how do I make it so that all the questions and prompts are done AFTER the scan has finnished? OR the questions are asked but the scan continues without me having to select a decision.

The reason for this is that scans and defrags usualy take a long time and I like to leave my computer get on with it alone. However, its not much good if something comes up while I am  having sex or something.  The PC will just be wasting power just to display the question and not doing anything useful. It will also take that much longer to finish the scan because it needed to wait for me to make a decision rather than complete the scan, then let me make the decisions. I want to automaticaly send everything to virus chest without being prompted until scan has completed.

This is available only in Professional version (see picture here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=13315.msg112285#msg112285).
In Home version you can check the option "Don't show this window again" as soon as the first virus warning appears, and click on "No action" button. This way, nothing will be done and you will be presented the results at the end (and you can perform actions from there).

As Tech mentioned, these advanced automated options are only available in the Pro version.

You only have a limited option in the Home (free) version, to send the infected file to the virus Chest (silent mode, with general answer no, see below).
My own feeling on this is you should use the default interactive action. This way you know exactly what is going on with your system. If you are getting so many warnings, that you want to automate this process, I believe you should review your security practice - filter emails at source, delete from server rather than download them, sites they visit, etc.

However, this stop start action should only happen once since after you have your system clean. This frequency of detection during a scan will be greatly reduced if not eliminated by the multi level protection of the resident scanners checking and trying to stop infected files getting on to the hard drive in the first place.

See the avast help file, Resident Protection: Standard Shield Provider Settings - "Advanced" Page.
Click on Standard Shield and then on Customize.
Go to Advanced tab and select Silent Mode and the General answer No.

Leave the file in the chest for a week or two (it can do no harm from there) to ensure no adverse effect from being moved to the chest. Then scan the file again in the chest to ensure it is still detected as infected and if so delete it from the chest.
