After updating to the latest of avast pro 17.6.2310 neither Firefox or explorer will start, it crashes right away, went back to previous version and problem is gone.
I'm on Windows 7 Pro x64, I'm experiencing this on 3 of my systems.

Thanks for the reply but it seems the problem still exists even after manual update of VD I guess I will stay with the previous version for now
-
OK, no problem.

Vapor, can you please try to disable self-protection (UI -> Troubleshooting), rename "snxhk.dll" / "snxhk64.dll" and run your web browser again if it helps? Thanks.
-
Yes the renaming of the dll have fixed the crash problems, thanks. Does that effect programs functionality in any negative way ;)

Rename "snxhk.dll" to "snxhk64.dll" and vice versa?
Sorry for asking, I just want to make sure...

If you mean you don't want to update to the 17.6.2310 version, set the AvastUI > Settings > Update > Program > Settings > Manual Update.
You can also go into the Notifications area of the avast UI main window (the Bell icon at the top right of the UI) and you can set the Program Update notification to Ignore.
Forget the free support telephone number that is a 3rd party support company contracted to give limited program support. By far your best option is to come to the forums, were for the most part it is avast users helping other avast users.

Based on your suggestion I changed the filename snxhk.dll to snxhk64.dll and snxhk64.dll to snxhk.dll then all my browser work now.

Vapor - or anyone else with this problem, we're not able to simulate it in our lab. Can you please rename "snxhk.dll" / "snxhk64.dll" back to original name, run your web browser and when a crash window is shown, run Task Manager and create dump of those processes? Can you please compress them (7z/rar) and upload on our ftp (ftp.avast.com) ? Thanks.
-
I have uploaded dumps of chrome to the ftp.

Strange that you can't reproduce this behavior since not only 3 of my systems running into the same thing but many users reporting the same issue as well
My nephew who has the free avast called me up last night with the same problem :)

I already had a filenamed snxhk64.dll. I renamed the file snxhk.dll as snxhk.dll(2) and now my browsers work again.

Im having problems with my browsers after installing latest avast free update . Chrome and Firefox start for a second in task manager then stop . I have the same problem with AVG .
Running 64 bit Windows 10 Home version 1607 , os build 14393.1198 .
Uninstalling avast or avg fixed my problem.
Could not rename the two files to check if this fixed because i get an administrator error .

Reread Reply #4, you need to disable Avast self defense first.
-
jocobralex,
changing to another av is not a fix.
It is running away from the problem.

It helped me.
Both ways are good:
1. Renaming just snxhk.dll to snxhk.dll(2) freed browsers
2. Changed filenames snxhk.dll to snxhk64.dll and snxhk64.dll to snxhk.dll also helped
Thanks for the clue! But no thanks to Avast for several lost hours of my Sunday! >:(

It's just bad business to use a faulty product . It's also stupid to leave your computers unprotected !
-
If you don't want to use a faulty product, stop using Windows.
-
I have been using avast pro for probably 2 decades and during that time I've seen some bad releases that would cause all kinds of things, was I frustrated...Yes, even few times I thought of going to something else, but there is no perfect thing in this world and as always avast team would fix the issues , maybe not right away, but they would get to it and they will get to this one I'm sure.
This time is no different, the latest update is bad, GUI loads like snail and without renaming of the dll's there is no go with any of the browsers, so hopefully they will get to that issues soon enough.
As far is Windows been venerable or sucks, yes in some ways, but other platforms have their share of horrid if not with venerability than compatibility and limitations in many other aspects, it is what it is ;D

Nobody's perfect. Programmers are just humans too.
Simply proceed as suggested in this thread or revert to the previous version.

Can you please confirm that Lucidlogix Virtu is installed on afflicted computers?

Can you please confirm that Lucidlogix Virtu is installed on afflicted computers?
Uninstalling Virtu seems to have fixed the "ntdll.dll" crash for me. Firefox and IE were insta-crashing after the latest Avast update (both worked in Win7 safe mode, SafeZone browser was unafflicted), everything's back to normal now.
-
I had the problem that Thunderbird and the Iron Browser (a Chrome-Browser) not start. After the renaming it works now. Thanks!
-
Can you please confirm that Lucidlogix Virtu is installed on afflicted computers?
I had Virtu 1.2.104 and after uninstalling it the issue is gone.
-
OK, seems we found the culprit... ;)

The Japanese one who has the same issue also confirm his/her machine has Virtu installed.
OK, seems we found the culprit... ;)
Looks like that 8)

Like I said, sooner or later avast team will find necessary fix ;) ;)

I too experienced issues with the recent update, except in my case, it affected Chrome and Internet Explorer.
I solved the issue by doing the following:
1) Uninstall Avast
2) Boot into Safe Mode and Run the Avast Remove Tool.
3) Install Avast
4) Boot into Safe Mode and navigate to your Avast install directory. Find the file named snxhk.dll and DELETE it. Empty your Trash and Reboot.
5) Open Avast and disable Auto Update. I set mine to notify me when an update is available.
This method worked on my PC running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I can now use Chrome, IE or any other browser without issue.
Hope this helps.
-
1, 2, 3) not needed at all.
4) No need to delete it as has been explained, rename it.
5) avast can and will still install updates through micro fixes.
-

OK, then riddle me this Batman, what do you do if you have both snxhk.dll AND snxhk64.dll on your system as was my case?!
5) avast can and will still install updates through micro fixes.
Yes and wouldn't you know, as soon as I let it update, it dropped snxhk.dll back into the program directory and made Chrome shit the bed again. Better IMHO to disable Auto Update then continue to be Avast's guinea pig, but you do you bro.

Your screenshot would appear to indicate the self-defence module is still enabled.
Why would you not disable the self-defence module temporarily, it takes less than a minute and then you should be able to do as suggested. Now you are left with waiting for the fix when delivered an a micro update.
