The C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def file is somehow corrupt and is 0KB in size, delete it. There is also a servers.def.lkg (.lkg = last known good) this is meant to recover from servers.def problems but it too may be 0KB, leave it.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

My servers file is this servers.def.vpu

it says 1 kb or 8hundred and something bytes.

Should I delete it or leave it?

The other two files I mentioned should also be present.

However, the servers.def.vpu doesn't include the list of update servers, that is contained in the servers.def file.

My servers.def. is shown as 9KB or 8744 bytes, it is a text file containing a list of 61 servers and the servers.def.lkg in my case is the same.
My servers.def.vpu is shown as 1KB or 894 bytes, so your one would appear to be fine.

In windows explorer ensure that all files and extensions are shown, Tools, Folder options, View, 1) Show hidden files and folders, 2) uncheck Hide extensions of known file types.

Regardless of the outcome if you can't find servers.def, try the avast repair as I mentioned.

What is your Operating System ?

Something should happen, no matter what your OS, if nothing else it shoud pop-up warning Are you sure, etc. or words to that effect if it doesn't pop-up the avast setup window. So there may well be something wrong with windows, what I'm unsure.
Did you not find servers.def or servers.def.lkg ?

Into the firewall settings, the following program should be allowed to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable)

Also, can you should set your 'proxy' settings (into avast settings > Update (Connections) > proxy to 'none' and not autodetect.

Also you can delete the servers.def file (into C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\ folder) and start a manual update.

I can't offer any suggestion about the problem with windows add remove, there is something wrong with that.

You can try and download the servers.def file, instructions and location in this post http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=504.msg169873#msg169873.

Also trying a manual update should check for servers.def and replace if missing I think ?

If that doesn't work, the only thing left if you can't do that - uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
It would probably be best to download the latest version of avast and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
