I know that many people have suffered this issue, and there have been many suggestions.
I took the drastic step of uninstalling AVAST completely. I also used the AVAST uninstall utility.
***After removing avast, Thunderbird still complains about certificates***
Is there some service/process still hanging around?
I'm ready to through my laptop through the window with all of the 'Confirm certificates' popups I continually get.
I've tried looking through the registry, but may have missed something.
How do I completely clean out AVAST and this "Man in the middle" Email problem?
Please

Hi, no problems here with Thunderbird and Avast certs.
Anyway, follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Asyn,
As I said in my original post, I had tried the uninstall utility and it didn't resolve the problem.
I have been using AVAST since 2007. This is the 1st time I have found a need to try and remove it entirely.
So far the uninstall utility is failing to resolve my issue

Open the cert manager in TB and search/remove the Avast certs.

I am having the same problem. I have exported and installed the avast cert twice on a brand new windows10 PC with fresh thunderbird but I still get the certificate error messages the minute I restart thunderdbird.
How can this problem still exist after all these years? Just telling users to disable the mail shields is not a solution. Thanks in advance

Repair Avast:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> Avast
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.
