Title: Smart Scan doing less and less
Post by: rocksteady on October 28, 2017, 07:35:33 PM
I am running avast fee 17.7.2314 on Win10 and have all except scan sesitive files selected. However, just done smart scan and only anti-virus, vulnerable software, browser add-ons were done. Before today 4 activities were performed by Smart Scan, now only 3 things. Weird, but nothing to do with Halloween.

Repair Avast:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> Avast
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

Thanks Asyn,
Did that but no change.
Same Smart Scan settings on my XP machine also results in scan for network threats as 4th activity of Smart Scan, as did on Win10 machine before, but not for last few days.

What part is no longer a part of this scan ???

Hi Bob,
Sorry I have not checked for replies for a bit.
Scan for network threats no longer runs, but is selected to run and used to run in smart scan OK.
I have tried repair as suggested by Asyn, also unselected and reselected "scan for network threats" under settings.
Uninstalled and reinstalled WiFi Inspector but no change to Smart scan. WiFi Inspector works on its own OK, also "scan for network threats" works within Smart Scan on XP machine.
I can't be bothered with clean install as it is only a peripheral feature of Smart Scan IMO.
However, something seems amiss.

It may also be that something is not working because you're using XP.
There are limits and reasons why it's no longer supported by Microsoft and many programs.
I don't use XP so I have no way of comparing what happens on an XP system and what happens on Windows 10.

I use XP Pro on this desktop and avast free 17.7.2314, generally I don't run on-demand scans, only on beta testing and in relation to questions in the forums (like this one).

Even when I run various scans and the smart scan in particular there are components I haven't installed and they won't be run.  I only have Scan for viruses, Scan for outdated software and Scan for network threats enabled to run.

Having just run the Smart Scan the Scan for network threats does not run.

So despite having the Scan for network threats enabled in the smart scan it isn't listed in the scanning progress screen and doesn't run.  Looks like you have found a bug.

I may have added confusion mentioning XP.
Please read as :
1. Smart Scan  does not  perform as expected (i.e. no network scan) on my Win10 machine.
2. Smart Scan  does  perform as expected on my XP machine.
Same version, same Smart Scan settings.

David R,
Ah. So I'm not alone. You getting 2 out of 3 wheras I'm getting 3 out of 4 selected components showing in Smart Scan. Scan for network is missing on both.
So bug it is then. Hope this is seen by Devs.

Hello,
as far I'am concerned , it's ok for network scan , but...
only 4 of 6 selected (sensitive data forgotten by example)

I have been notified that the Network Scan of the Smart Scan is run outside of the Smart Scan to make it quicker.  So you don't see the Network Scan run and there is no log that I can see.  This would imply it isn't a bug but an intended action.

This just causes user confusion and as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't speed up the smart scan at all and possibly increases the duration.  The smart scan sits on 0% for absolutely ages, so it is actually waiting for the network scan to complete.

I have also found that it appears to be running scans of elements that 'I HAVEN'T INSTALLED' (how is that possible if they haven't been installed), such as the Performance - Cleanup that I haven't installed a popup appears after the Smart Scan completes (attached). These could also be contributing to the duration/speed (or lack of it) of the so called smart scan.

Reported to developers. Let's hope that gets us a reply. :)

David,
But that does not explain why Network Scan appears when Smart Scan is run under WinXP but does not appear when run under Win10 in my case.

Lets put it this way I have run it on both XP and win10 systems and it doesn't do the Network Scan during the Smart Scan but outside of it.

Avast have said this from the last beta, which is now the current release version.
new beta version 17.7.2314 (build 17.7.3660.0) is released.

What's new:
    <snip>
    • Wifi Inspector scan is now started parallel in Smart Scan to speed up whole Smart Scan
    <snip>
    AVAST Team.
Part of the problem here are the subtle differences which cause confusion WiFi Inspector and Network Scan.  Which as far as I'm concerned should be one scan that does both.

If you actually run a smart scan from the main avastUI button, it doesn't give you any choice and it only runs the WiFi Inspector (but outside of the smart scan).

If however you open the UI > Protection > WiFi Inspector - this gives you a Network Scan button that also includes the WiFi Inspector scan. As clear as MUD.

It's a bloody mess.[/list]

David R.
On my XP machine "Network Threats" scan appears within the Smart Scan. See screenshots below.
But same not true on Win10 machine.
Are you seeing something different than me on your XP machine, although running same latest release version. (not a Beta).

Here's a screen shot from an actual Windows 10 (1709) Smart Scan

I can only post what is on my screen during a smart scan and Network Threats isn't there on XP or win10 smart scans.

I have Avast 17.7.2314 (build 17.7.3660.244) not a Beta. I just did another repair of avast for the hell of it, but has not changed behaviour of Smart Scan. I have Win10 Home 1703.
My Smart Scan settings and corresponding Smart Scan actions appear in screen shots attached. Like DavidR, I can only show what I am actually seeing myself.
Whilst this strange behaviour of Smart Scan is not critical to Avast's primary role as anti-virus, it is inconsistent with the settings. Note. This was not the case until quite recently, so is result of an update.

@ rocksteady,
Do you have all of the components installed ?
As you can see you'r screenshot look quite a bit different from mine.

The Network scan isn't a component, WiFi Inspector is, that is displayed as Network Threats (in your image), but not in either of our images.

This whole area is a bloody mess, different names for what is essentially the same thing, Network Threats and WiFi Inspector.  You run a Network Scan and if you happen to be using WiFi then it should scan those if not then it doesn't scan them.

Bob,
I do not have Privacy or Performance related components installed, but do have WiFi Inspector. That works fine stand-alone.
