Hello, please help me!
I have a MacBookAir with MacOS 10.12.6 and have used free Avast Security a long time. Today I downloaded version 13 and first uninstalled the previous version as instructed. During the last step of installation of the the latest version, the installer stopped and showed this message (Translated into english): "Installation failed. The installer encountered an error preventing installation. Contact the program maker and ask for assistance." I have tried this three times with the same result. Consequently I now have neither the older, nor the new version and is unprotected.
Please give me instructions on what to do!

@heze - please try to download the DMG of version 13.0 again (link above). Run the "Uninstall Avast" that will show up.
If it fails again (hopefully not) check the uninstall log - open terminal, cat /tmp/avastuninstall-*

Why is the ransomware shield blocking Apple MacOS services such as photoanalysisd and cloudphotosd? These should be in the whitelist by default.
-
Thanks for report! We'll fix it in next update.
Please add them to "Allowed apps" as a workaround to fix it now.

Fixed in 13.3 release.

Thanks for fixing those two, but there are others. Bearing in mind that the Mac System/Library is totally locked down, would it not make sense to exclude any executables that reside there as they are part of the operating system and cannot be tampered with?

Hello,
The problem is not with the fact that the executables are part of the operating system, but that they could potentially be used by a malicious code to destroy your data. Assuming that our file shield does not detect the ransomware in time, it is then free to use any of the system binaries to do the harm.
Kind regards,
Ondrej Kolacek

Thanks. I understand what you are saying however I have a concern. The ransomware shield seems to act indescrimitately, in other words it blocks a process whatever app calls it genuine or rogue. isn’t there a danger that your blocking the process for a genuine app could result in data loss or corruption of data?
-

Ransomware shield protects only select file types and these only in directories the user selects. While there are some theoretical scenarios where data could be lost and corrupted (eg. badly written app that needs to modify multiple files atomically and does not cope correctly with access errors), it is highly unlikely for the types of files we protect. What is possible (and expected) is that "legit" apps may fail to write protected files. While this may lead to a loss of data, it is never silent (the app is notified about forbidden access).
So when protecting files via Ransomware shield, verify, that your tools work correctly, and, if necessary, whitelist them. When all is working, you have yet another layer of protection on files you care about.

Apologies - another question:
The default state of the webshield on installation has "Scan files while downloading" toggled off. In this state, the application fails the majority of the AMSTO tests. Surely this is not intentional?
-
Just double-checking: is this address to the changelog correct/legit?
http://mac-av.u.avcdn.net/mac-av/10_9/AAFM/changelog.html
Thanks!

Which tests exactly? https://www.amtso.org/feature-settings-check-for-desktop-solutions/ are OK, except compressed malware and cloud protection.

I noticed in the recent version that no longer can you "disable" blocking. You used to be able to still get notified of a threat but Avast would not take action on it. Now, the only option is just to disable the entire shield. Is there anyway to get this functionality back? Thank you!!

Hello chmitchell,
we have not removed any such functionality at least in the past year. I don't know what was before as I was not there. AFAIK you could only disable automatic chesting of infected files and that is still available in Preferences -> Shields -> File Shield -> Settings. It does not make much sense to me to have a shield running and not block threats. By the time you get the notification that a malware was detected, your Mac could already be compromised. This option would be IMO very dangerous. When you switch off the shield you get notified about it in the main UI and you know you are actually not protected. That is the correct behavior from my perspective.
Best regards,
Jakub

Hello,
mail shield has "remove infected attachments" which serves similar purpose; fileshield has the "moved infected file to chest" option which is similar.

Thank You
Realtime protections aka shields are part of the Avast Security (FREE). However there is no behavioral shield on Mac - it's part of the Windows Avast AV.

And yes, you are right. Your link goes to the old installer tha stayed at the CDN. However it's by accident - because we changed the naming scheme of installers. (I'll not fix it as there might be some users who want the old version ;) )

Does it detect and clean the Cr1ptTor Ransomware?

Hi, last version Cr1ptTor Ransomware should be detected. ZV

Hi, there should appear a system dialog requesting an elevation to admin privileges. The installer needs it for proper installation of all AV parts. If you don't provide correct admin credentials or you click "cancel" then the installer will fail.
There may be also some log in /tmp directory that would provide more details about it.
Best regards,
Lukas.

Dear Avast Team, can you please consider to publish the Offline download link for Mac version as well(like the post for Windows version)? It will really help to save some time for installing. Many thanks.
-
Hi iBob,
We gave up on publishing the offline installer a while ago. There were several reasons however the main one was that it would require to repackage the offline installer after each update of the virus definitions database(aka vps). And because we are updating the virus definitions 3 times a day it would be quite a lot of work. We haven't found real world scenario where you'd need to install AV offline in end user world.
The situation is a bit different in SMB/Enterprise world...
If we don't repackage the installer with new virus definitions file then either an user ends with old definition (and may be vulnerable) or the antivirus will try to update the virus definitions automatically. We do "diff" updates but if there is more than 10 diffs between your vps and the latest one then it is better to download the whole new vps. It'd be safer and less bandwidth consuming.
iBob, let me explain how the offline and online installation work (I'm simplifying it...)
- Offline installation - you download one big DMG with the installer and virus definitions file. Installer installs product files and unpacks the virus definitions to your mac drive. And then it tries to update the virus definitions to the latest available version (another download)
- Online installer - you download a small DMG with the product installer. Installer downloads the latest virus definitions from Avast's servers. Then it installs product files and copies downloaded virus definition to your mac drive
Best regards,
Lukas

I have sent messages in regards to this issue. I have version 14 of AVAST MAC Security and have had to uninstall and reinstall this app 3 times. The issue is that after three days the app opens to a banner in the main window of "This MAC not fully protected and that I am not up to date". So what is this issue how do I correct it?
-
Dear zenon68,
Would it be possible to get a screenshot of the dashboard (feel free to send it to hasik (at) avast (dot) com) ?
It would be great if you check also your version and version of virus definitions in About dialog. The product should try to update the virus definitions periodically (automatically) therefore this situation should not happen when you are not offline for looong time.
You can try to hit the UPDATE NOW button in Preferences > General or run following command in Terminal /Applications/Avast.app/Contents/Backend/scripts/update/update.sh (screenshot first, please).
Lukas.

I just installed this version of Avast. So far so good. One thing I wanted to point out is File Shield. Under the options there's something that says:
Report potentially unwanted programs (e.g., those bundled with other programs).
The irony here is you guys do this very thing with Avast. My version of Avast comes BUNDLED with Google Chrome.
I would suggest removing Google Chrome from Avast as those who want it know where to find it. This has bothered me ever since you added this additional annoyance.
Perhaps this is something to think about as far as your product is concerned. Are you guys becoming a bastardized version of what drew people to you?
-
Updated avast on my Mac this morning. No issues so far, however I was wondering if there was a Notifications panel similar to previous release where I could see when an update was done and a history of recent updates? I do not see that in the latest. Also are there still popups or are they gone too? Missing those to be honest.
Thanks! GB
-
Updated to the new version today and a bit disapointed...I miss the popups when update is done and the right clic option "Analyse with avast " which is very usefull and faster than opening the UI....Hope it will come back !

Downloaded and tried to install several times, but the installer issues an alert at the end of installation, at "Validating Packages" stage: "The installation failed. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance".
Repaired disk permissions, changed System Preferences to "Allow apps downloaded from Anywhere״, ran DiskWarrior, changed "sudoers" in etc folder to "Read & Write", changed manually permissions of Applications folder to "Read & Write", but to no avail. What else can be done ?

My Mac just updated itself to the new 14.2 release and now there appears to be NO way to scan an INDIVIDUAL file... do you REALLY get rid of this feature? I can't RIGHT click on a file to scan it like previous versions did and when going through the Avast interface the lowest level scan it allows to setup is a Folder.
Is the SINGLE file scan feature permanently lost? Or will this be added back sooner than later?

We definitely plan to add it back in near future.
Current "Targeted Scan" allows scan of a single file however it's a way less user friendly then a simple right click.

Hi, happy to ear that !

I recently updated to 14.2 on my Mac and find that the way scan reports are able to be accessed and viewed is A) tough to find and B) doesn't provide enough detail. Previously, you could just go to Scan Reports and see the history. However, now you have to click the 3 dots next to "Run Mac Scan" then select the scan you want a report on then click the 3 dots next to that scan name and it will show you the results from the last scan. It doesn't, however, show the history or let you know when that last scan was done (i.e. if there was a failed scan). Previous versions gave you more detail on scan history. Please improve for future versions. Thanks!

I concur, but I cannot even find what you find. I find the first three dots but after that there are no more 3-dots beside any of the custom or regular scan. Nothing. Frustrating

Hi, I don't have the second 3 dots. Maybe rgcarterva has the paid version... I have the free one and maybe you too. The +1 was just in order to insist on the fact a report easy acessible with the results of the scan and history of updates, scans, etc like in the 13.12 and before is missing ! Hope it will come back soon !!!

I was unpleasantly surprised to find the right-click context menu had disappeared (see image below). This was the primary way in which I scanned files. It was two easy steps: right click the file and choose Scan With Avast Mac Security. The new workflow requires 4 steps: Open Avast Security, click the ellipses, Click Targeted Scan, and then choose the files/folders to scan.
I'm not sure why the context menu was removed, but it has created an awful user experience in my opinion. I can't imagine why you'd want to hide the primary function of the application (scanning for malware/viruses) behind so many steps?

yes, it's unpleasant experience - we are bringing it back in next update!

And so... When do you plan to release this new version ? It is quite an important feature, making a menu to disappear...
-
Hello ?! Do you plan to answer someday ??
1 month is just a sign you clearly don't care at all.
How can this is even possible to remove such a trivial feature, you don't have to reinvent the wheel and don't need several month.
-
Guys, while I understand your point of view it's quite hard to promise an exact release date. We are finalizing testing of new release that should bring back features you were asking for - right click scan and scan history. However there are other bug fixes and improvements therefore it takes longer than a quick bug fix release for the menu item. Thank you for your patience.
-
Dear friends of Avast, the requested features are back. If you haven't received the updated version 14.3 automatically please go to Preferences > UPDATE NOW.

Hi,
Thanks for the good work ! the comeback of these fontions is really appreciated !

I have used Avast in the past and renewed some months ago. I can assure you that I will NEVER use Avast again after this time expires because I am constantly bombarded with requests to spend more money for security.
I PAID YOU FOR THE SECURITY I WANT. Do not keep telling me my computer is at risk when I have never had these messages in the past from you or any other provider. It is a waste of my time and intensely irritating to keep having warnings which then require me to spend more money to have 'resolved' when I have already paid you for a service to prevent such things.
Regards

rosross, when you buy the Premium version then you should not receive offers to upgrade anymore. There might be some offers for our other products time to time, however most of them is triggered by a situation. E.g. when you connect to a potentially risky wi-fi then we recommend to use (buy) our VPN product, when there is just a few space left on your hard drive we promote our Cleanup product. Yiu can turn off these promotions in Preferences > Privacy > Show offers for our other products.

Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro 13 Retina and had another type of security system but I was not that satisfied. Therefore I would like to try out a new one. How are your experiences with the new version of Avast?
And does the system also prevent adwares?
Thanks in advance! :)

Last night free Avast updated to latest and core shields not working. Uninstalled and reinstalled but same issues. 14.6 (9745695592b3). Mac Mojave 10.14.6

Yes. It's broken for every Mac user and has been for about a week.

As I previously mentioned under "BETA version 14.6 with support for BigSur", I have the same problem as you mention firstimacman.
lquinta, you replied that "Yes. It's broken for every Mac user and has been for about a week."
Where do you see that?
My girlfriend is running the same OSX and version of Free Avast as firstimacman and myself, with ONE difference: Her Avast core shields are working !
So, I do not see that "It's broken for every Mac user" - the problem seems selective to me.
If it were the case that it's broken for - let's say "many" users - it would very unprofessional of Avast not to address the issue quickly, no? Or at least publish the reason and what they are doing to fix it.
Can you explain more? Thanks.

I am running Avast Security (Free Edition) Version 14.6 (4488b76e8886) for Mac on Big Sur
The only core shield I have active is "File Shield" ("Web Shield" and "Email Shield" are disabled; I do not need them)
When I put my computer to sleep (or it goes to sleep naturally) and then I wake it up...
I get a spinning rainbow cursor for almost a minute waiting to access the login screen. I can not enter my password or use my fingerprint during this time.
I looked at the system log and there was mention of an abnormal service exit each time from the fileshield service before control was returned to the user for login.
system.log entry:
Nov 26 11:12:25 hostname com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.avast.fileshield[49826]): Service exited with abnormal code: 1
My sleep is configured as a hibernate (mode 25 on hibernatemode setting):
hostname:~ hostname$ pmset -g
System-wide power settings:
Currently in use:
standbydelaylow 0
standby 1
womp 1
halfdim 1
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
proximitywake 1
powernap 0
gpuswitch 1
networkoversleep 0
disksleep 30
standbydelayhigh 86400
sleep 60
hibernatemode 25
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 20
tcpkeepalive 1
highstandbythreshold 50
acwake 0
lidwake 1
When I disable file shield this problem goes away.
Can you confirm an issue with file shield coming out of sleep (perhaps hibernated sleep)?

Glad avast has released a version compatible with Silicon Macs. Emulation or Rosetta 2 apps use way too much memory. This version uses tiny amounts of memory and CPU. So far it's running smooth as butter. Will update if I run into any issues.

Hi,
I bought Avast Premium in February 2022, specifically to address a VIRUS on MacOS:Adload-AD[Trj] or Adload-M[Trj] or Asload-S[Trj] -- they are quarantined but.... setup.dmg containing setup.app is left on my desktop and by morning my desktop is covered with silver installer icons --- I highlight all of them and select "EJECT" and they all disappear and I wish that AVAST deleted them which is never did even before i bought Premium.
Steve
PS - I am on a 2019 Mac Pro (desktop) Running Monterey 12.2
