Title: Please Stop With Boot-up Popup Windows
Post by: fireworksheavens on November 11, 2017, 12:14:18 AM
Every day now since the latest update, after logging into Windows, I get 3 popups from Avast asking me to activate a free trial for internet security, and 2 more popups asking about the same thing.
Why is Avast doing this, begging for money? One popup window after upgrading to the recent version should be enough. Not interested means not interested. Spamming popup windows everytime the computer boots is going too far.
Is this just a bug that will be corrected soon, or is this nuisance here to stay?

This boot up nag-vertisement is really annoying. Thankfully, I only get it on one of my PCs.
Pleas can it.

This type of popup?  I get it on my Secondary Windows 10 Pro x64 Desktop, and starting to get annoying

Already did the repair/restart--no change
Already selected Free/restarted
Already did clean install of latest version

Still shows up

Got it again today on boot up WIN7

Tries to force an upsell.... :(

Screen 1. ..."please confirm your level of protection"

Screen 2."thank you for activating.." pushes you to upgrade... "x" out -or if not careful- you will upgrade

Screen 3. "Not ready to commit??..free trial" ... "x" out again or you will be upgraded

Thanks, but I always pick custom install. Right now the only checked boxes are file and web shields.

I also get more hype at the bottom of the screen telling me that my PC is "not operating" at max. performance and then listing "health problems"....

I've been an avast user for about 8 years now.  I have been getting the same thing on my main desktop system now for about 4 months.  Basically since 2 avast engine updates ago.  System is running windows 7 home premium and is an I7.   I have a laptop, and a netbook both running windows 7 home premium that this doesn't happen to for some reason.  I've tried repairs, uninstalls / reinstall, clean installs and still get the issue.  It's becoming very annoying to see it happen almost every day at boot up.  I've considered leaving the system on all the time or just putting it in sleep mode as it doesn't happen if I do that.  I've noticed in event viewer that if I get the popup annoying popup on bootup, the prior shutdown I get the following error.

Event ID 1530

Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

 DETAIL -
 3 user registry handles leaked:
Process 1312 (\Device\HarddiskVolume3\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastSvc.exe) has opened key
Process 1312 (\Device\HarddiskVolume3\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastSvc.exe) has opened key
Process 1312 (\Device\HarddiskVolume3\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastSvc.exe) has opened key

I also find that readyboot has been giving the odd error since the last 2 avast updates.

Event ID 4

The maximum file size for session "ReadyBoot" has been reached. As a result, events might be lost (not logged) to file "C:\Windows\Prefetch\ReadyBoot\ReadyBoot.etl". The maximum files size is currently set to 20971520 bytes.

My system had neither error until avast was updated a few months back during a normal update process.

Hope this info helps the programmers shed some light on the issue.  As i'm puzzled.

New clean installations tend to get hit for a few days, I have only seen that Confirmation of protection level once in a reasonable time.  But then you get others, however they too tend to reduce after a while.

I have a lot of PC's in my house and use multiple AV programs.  If Avast does not stop this aggressive selling of their other add-on products I will be cancelling my subscription.  Its that simple, sick of the pop-ups and loud red messages in the interface screen. Stop it or I dump it.

Been Using Avast since 2006 steadily, minus trying out a few other programs over the years on test PC's,  but I always even come back to Avast on the Test system, lately Avast has gotten really aggressive with pushing paid products, I know Developers need to make money, if I had the money, maybe i'd purchase some part of it, but feeling like i'm pressured into purchasing something will just cause me to end up dumping it on Multiple systems and Mobile Phone/Tablet devices

Non Intrustive ads are ok, Popups is where I draw the line,  One System is trying out Defender currently,  whether it stays on Defender is up to Avast Developers on what they do on these Popups,  it's not just 1 a week, it's every day or every restart of that system upstairs,   Or when the other one is booted up,   this was even happening with that old PC up there with version 17.7,  maybe it's due to subscription on that one only has less then 200 days left, but still very intrusive at the moment.

This PC only seen the Popup one time

Test PC 3 times, before I dropped it for now from that one

Windows 7 Sp1 System, so far didn't see it yet

All I want is Quality Protection

I'm getting to the point of frustration beyond need over this.  I've really got no problem with advertising in it's proper place.  Like down in the right pop up of the system tray where it should be, or banner adds on the main screen of their program.  I mean it is a free product so you have to expect some advertising.  But for a program to completely hijack my full computer screen every time I boot up, and have to click through 3 screens of it is a bit much.

Like I said before, I've been an avast user for over 8 years now.  I am an electronics engineer.  I am an extremely careful pc user.  I don't visit sites I don't trust, I don't open email attachments I don't trust.  I use antivirus as a safety measure.  I'll be 100% honest, I switched from AVG years ago because they started using the exact same hard sell tactics as this.  I don't mind non intrusive things like the banner add on the main screen of their program, or the pop up adds in the task-bar tray where they should be.  But seriously guys this is getting a bit absurd.  And I only did a fresh reinstall to try and get rid of these adds,  but all it did was make it worse.  Not to mention the bugs the program has and unnecessary features that come bundled with it or it tries to sell.   It just rendered 2 of my friends xp systems useless.  They freeze after 20 minutes of use.  Yet all they had to do was a full uninstall to get functionality back.  A reinstall rendered them useless again.  Really, If you want people to pay for your product.  Fix the problems and make it glow.  Don't shove advertising down peoples throats.  It's not cool.   >:(

Well Avast bought AVG not too long ago, looks like they are applying their policies across the board.

I am using Avast AV Pro and I am fed up with reminders in effect telling me what I have not bought yet!
I bought what I want/need. It is my choice!
Enough already

Have you unchecked the AvastUI > Settings > General > Popups - 'Show popup offers for other Avast products' ?

That is unchecked but I still get the pop up, located from the sys tray.
Not often, I will admit.
However I include the stuff (main GUI) that I do not want.
I 'see' Privacy (for instance) and when Avast has a change to another product there is a notification.
When Avast has a new version the sys tray icon notifies so I have a look and lo and behold also included is 'New, New & New.

@bob3160
Thank you, very kind of you.

I have had this thingy (tech talk) for a while now.
Sept 19th '17 "How to stop pop-ups on AV Pro"

Have tried all the usual
Perhaps it's my old Vista (2008), I can't expect Avast or any one else to support all the old OS's

Sorry that wasn't of any help in this.

Since you mentioned privacy - AvastUI > Settings > General > Privacy - have you unchecked both of those options ?

I unchecked Participate in data sharing but I still have the Participate in the Avast community, I wonder if unchecking that would have any impact in this regard.

Thank you, I did not know of your posts - sorry.
I have unchecked the last box now (Avast Community) and will wait for the next Avast program version update and see.
There do seem to be a lot of them (Program updates) almost streaming ;)
