Hi....... new here...... I know there was a topic about the tray icon but I can't find it. When I re-boot [Win XP ] the icon come back but eventually it disappears again. I know that the program is still running because the e-mail scan icon comes up but I like seeing the `a' go round & round & round :).
Sometimes after I re-boot, the icon disappears as soon as the cursor gets near it [ maybe a conincedence but it's happened several times ],other times the icon stays put for a while & then poof it's gone.
I've checked all the settings & I can't find anything that would affect the icon.
Any ideas ???

Strange... it seems like the corresponding program (ashDisp.exe) is not running... can you verify in Task Manager that the program is really running when the icon disappears?

Umm.. Sorry if I'm beeing a bit dumb here, since I'm not running XP, but have you checked that it doesn't auto-hide?
Your've probably checked that, but just to make sure.. :)

Ok guys, the icon just went away again :'( .. I checked the task manager and ashdisp.exe is running. I checked my e-mail & the e-mail scan icon came on but no revolving A >:(
I'm gonna re-boot & see what happens....

At this time, I suggest you a 'clean installation of avast':
1. Download the avast! setup (current version 4.1.319). Take note of your Registration key or, if you need another key, the registration form can be found here (http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG)
2. Desinstall avast (Control Panel)
3. Boot
4. Use Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/files/eng/avclear4.exe) for complete desinstallation
5. Boot
6. Install the downloaded setup file
7. Boot
8. Enter the Registration key and configure avast! for your needs

Ok.... it's happening again :'( .... I've uninstalled & re-installed the program many,many times .... Sometimes the icon doesn't even load after a re-boot. The program is running cause the mail checker icon runs & ashdisp.exe is running..
Should I just live without the spinning "a" ?? or is there something else I can do..
Also, for awile the program wouldn't even load so I installed anti-vir just to have a virus program running ....when anti-vir was installed & I re-installed avast, it only installed the e-mail & im shields ... and the A icon did *not* disappear. When I uninstalled anti-vir & re-installed the full program , the icon started disappearing again .

Pattigayle, are you running any spyware monitor (TeaTimer from SpyBot, Ad-Watch from Ad-aware, PrevX, etc.) while installing avast?
You could be avoiding the startup registry entry for ashDisp.exe...
If you run it manually from avast folder, will the icon appear?
You could stay with AntiVir but never with the resident shield enabled (I think it's called Guard in Antivir)...

I'm am running ad-aware but not ad-watch, I also have spyware guard. I uninstalled anti-vir [ I only used it when I could not get avast to run ].
I clicked on the ashdisp icon in the Avast folder & nothing happened....
I suppose I could live without the spinning A :'( if it's not indicative of a bigger problem.

You could be unprotected...
Can you click Ctrl+alt+del and see what avast (ash...) processes are running and post them here?

Are you sure the icon is not 'hiden' as you have Windows XP and it has this feature...
Click on the triangle on the system tray... will it appear?
If you have ashdisp.exe running you should have the icon ??? ::)

Nope . the little devil isn't hiding ... I have it set to always show and when I click properties & customize for the tray, the avast icon shows as a previous item.
Weird , huh ???

Did you change avast4.ini file values?
There is one (ShowTrayIcon) that could prevent the icon to be shown...

This happened to my fathers PC recently. After a clean boot the tray icon isnt there. Fairly new Windows XP SP2 pro reinstall.
I set Skype not to start at startup and then ended ashDisp.exe in task manager and started it again from "C:\program files\alwil software\avast". The icon appeared and is still there after a reboot.
1. may be Windows is a little messy?
2. Requiring downloading and running a "clean-up" program to fully uninstall something is indicative of very bad OS and an argument to switch to Linux?
Could Avast work as a not-need-to-be-installed and can be unzipped or used from a previous install if kept on D: ?
It could detect driver and services and install on demand. Filezilla asks if I wanto install and start service when I run it after a clean format/reinstall of Windows. Custom skins and icons and settings wouldn't be lost.

I have pretty much the same problem. The system tray icon suddenly dissapeared one day, after installing the MSN Live messenger. The following processes are running:
ashMaiSv
ashServ
ashWebSv
ashUpdSV
but no ashDisp. I did not find any setting with "run at startup" or similar. 1) Am i properly protected? 2) Any solution to the dissapearing tray icon?
Also, If I want to scan a single file automatically, what program should I use. Example, automatically scan files that are downloaded to a directory. Should not require any user input, just run as a background process.

PS. My avast4.ini does not contain a section [iAVST] where the setting for system tray icons can be set. I have the latest avast program, is this something new?

The avast icon is just an indicator that scans are being done, it rotates and is the interface with the on-access scanners and right click context menu. So it doesn't actually reduce your protection.
What is your Operating System ?
Check Windows Start, Run, type, msconfig - that the startup tab has an entry for ashDisp and that it is ticked.
You need to reread the thread and answer the questions (to yourself and see if they ring any bells) and try some of the suggested solutions.
I don't know where you got the [iAVST] from it is [AAVM], ShowTaskbarIcon=1, however, I think you will find that present.
What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?
As a temporary measure you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut).
