Title: Problem with email shield
Post by: Dwarden on May 16, 2006, 05:06:47 PM
some customers reported to me that Avast! email seems to encounter timeout problems when using normal Outlook Express and SMTP .

They simple start OE and try send email and nothing happens ...

Only way how solve this is to close OE
then either pause and unpause email shield or in worst case restart Avast! services completely!
and fter that You start OE again and voila it works ...

i'm able to replicate that on test machine with OE and various czech and english freemail servers supporting SMTP ...

btw. this bug start to appear after 826/827 update ...

Sorry the silly question, but are they using the last version?
Since avast! version 4.7.807 the mail scanner module ("Internet Mail" provider) has been significantly changed to improve the overall user experience, especially in case of slow connections (dial-up). Namely, most of (if not all) the "Timeout expired" related problems should be gone by now  ::) ???

Without seeing a detailed error warning/message or screenshot it is difficult to say what the problem/reason might be. What firewalls are they using, etc.

After a program update the Internet Mail scanner ashMaiSv.exe will have changed, if firewall permissions are blocked by the firewall you could get a timeout style warning. Ensure firewalls allow access for ashMaiSv.exe, this will either resolve the problem or eliminate one possible reason for the timeout.

it's not firewall related all machines were perfectly working prior update ...

there is no entry in logs usable to identify problem ...

Couple of options (maybe used together) might help to identify the problem.

1) turn on logging of connections in OE (Tools > Options > Maintenance tab)

2) turn on logging of connections in avast by adding the line:

Log=20

to the section:

[MailScanner]

of the avast4.ini file.

These changes will not affect the user's email activity.

When the user encounters another problem the two logs should show what OE and avast  are seeing.  If you wish to post them here for review please obscure any personally identifiable information.
