Title: Win10 Jan 18 security update
Post by: REDACTED on January 04, 2018, 04:15:30 PM
When will avast av be updated to be compatible witn win10 jan 18 security update addressing intel chip flaw? Not currently listed on MS's compatible vendors. MS will not supply update until this is accomplished.

Not listed by MS:

I've tried to download patch with no success. MS indicates it won't apply patch unless AV is compatible. It appears there is still an issue. Have any other avast users been successful?

Negative,

I have the Avast's micro update installed since the registry key required by MS is already present:

Key="HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"Subkey="SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat"
Value Name="cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc"
Type="REG_DWORD”
Data="0x00000000”

Windows Update still does not offer the update for me though. This appear as an issue on Microsoft end tbh.

I've escalated this to the Avast team.

Avast have released the microupdate but I guess Microsoft hasn't added them to the list yet.

Edit: the list has just been updated and Avast name is now there.

Thanks for your help on the reg key. This is all there. We'll see where this goes. It does appear to be on the MS end or in their communication with Avast.

Hmm.. does not seem to work for me.
I don't have the registry key.

Edit:
I am running Windows as a restricted user.
After logging on once with the Admin account, the reg key was present.. I hope that is just a coincidence.

yeah I can confirm, Avast is up to date, the registry key is present, but still not being offered the update. Microsoft says:

I have a compatible anti-virus application but I’m not being offered the January 3, 2018 security updates. What do I do?

In some cases, it may take time for security updates to be delivered to systems, particularly for devices that have been turned off or not connected to the Internet (offline). After they are turned on again these systems should receive updates from their anti-virus software providers. Customers still experiencing problems 24 hours after ensuring their devices have proper internet connectivity should contact their anti-virus software vendor for additional troubleshooting steps.

so ball in your court, Avast.  There's not a thing wrong with my internet.

Still now update. No idea whether this is an MS or Avast issue. Someone is kicking the can. Stay tuned.

It is compatible.

See: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=212648.msg1439270#msg1439270

Does this include the Avast Free version 17.9.2322? I don't see the required registry key, and running the Avast updater says I have the latest program and database updates.

And so I am not seeing the Win patch (for Win 10 Pro)

I am seeing the same result. For Windows 7, it appears that I will receive the patch on patch Tuesday. For Windows 10, I do not see the required registry entry and thus I am not offered the latest updates. Will Avast! Free be updated to accept the patches from Microsoft, and what is the ETA?

I've not got the windows update either. Latest avast updates but not offered the download.

It's probably easier for avast to push it as a full update to make sure everyone has it, for something this serious.

My guess is this is on MS end.

Yep...same issue here. I'm not on the latest Avast, still on 17.9.2318, but I checked and I do have the required registry value. Still no update. Been checking all day. I'm half tempted to remove Avast and see what happens then.

Apparently the update can be manually installed.  I found it here:

http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4056898

I installed it on one 2012 R2 machine successfully, but it did not have Avast.  My Avast machines are not getting Avast engine updates, and Windows Update is not offering the Jan security update.

CORECTION: I *do* have the key. Stupidly, I was looking for the reg key under "Current User", rather than HKLM.

So I *do* have the key, but I have *not* been offered the update from MS yet. My apologies, I was wrong.

(as a side note - full protection apparently also requires a firmware update for your hardware, and my self built PC hasn't had a new BIOS update for 2-3 years ... <sigh>)

Same here. Windows 10 Pro, Avast Internet Security (latest version and definitions), no registry key. I'd love to hear why the heck Avast didn't create the key.
