Hi,

Can Avast detect malware as I keep getting to 'call this number otherwise your IP will be reported to the authorities"

Avast, although called an Anti-Virus also detects malware, though no program gives 100% detection.

This sounds more like a 'Scam' than malware as such.  No doubt the telephone number would either be a premium rate or seek to have remote control over your computer, which no doubt would say there are problems and seek payment to fix them.

Are you getting this regularly, e.g. when visiting a certain site, when you open your browser (which one), or using a certain program ?
A screenshot of the notice could help.

What avast program version are you using ?
What is your operating system ?
Do you have any other security programs installed ?

Hi,

Windows 10, Edge and appears to be one particular website. Avast Anti-Vast (not sure which type but not free as we're paying a subscription).

I installed malwarebytes and this found it. I'd assumed that as we were paying for Avast it (ie upgrade) would also detect this. Looking at other forums it looks to be well know.

Do I need both?

If you right click on the Avast tray icon and select about avast, it will show you the version number.

Windows Edge is prone with those kind of Adwares , not malwares. It will keep on popping up on your screen on some websites that you visit. It's not inside your computer yet since it's just merely pop up on your screen telling you to call this specific number and they will ask for monetary stuff unless you clicked something and it saved something on your browser and triggered the issue. I suggest you install Adblock plus for edge
